The Fox & the Hound HD - WS! (Well, partially!)

Post by MattDean »

I've just watched The Fox & the Hound on Disney Cinemagic HD (UK) and the full opening credits were...wait for it...in widescreen! I'd say the ratio must have been 1.66:1 - but it definitely displayed more picture info than the current DVD which was, I thought, an open matte transfer.

Did anyone else catch it? Is it shown this way in the US? Does this mean that Disney is still to release it in its true ratio?

Questions!

Interestingly, I bought the French Special Edition release DVD which, according to the specs on the back, stated it was widescreen 1.66:1. Alas, it wasn't the case! Pardon the punn:)

FYI it's being shown over the weekend in the UK.

Think you can post screen caps next time it's on so the rest of us can compare? :)

So, Disney has a pay movie channel in the UK, but not in the US? These studio decisions make less sense than republicans claiming they're for the regular people.

Hey, do you have a way to record that?

I'm curious. Like, even a DVR would work, if you have some way to get it off of there :P

Cox offers a Disney-on-Demand channel where I live, but the selections are pretty skimpy.

And what's wrong with the UK having a Disney movie channel? :P

To be honest, Disney Cinemagic is okay, but isn't old-school Vault Disney stuff (aka stuff that would really entice a lot of people on this board) by any means. It's mainly showings (often constant at that) of movies - mainly midrange material like Oliver and Company, The Fox and the Hound, Pete's Dragon etc. Though it must be said, there are quite often some absolute platinum classics shown (mainly around school/public holidays).

So, only the opening credits were in widescreen, but the rest of the film was in fullscreen?

This isn't the first time they have done this. I bought the DVD for Horse Without a Head because the box says the film is in widescreen. Only the titles are widescreen.

Miracle of the White Stallions also has letterboxed opening credits and pan and scan for the rest of the film.

Fox and the Hound should be 1.75:1 according to it's press book's instructions on matting. If any DVD is actually 1.66:1 then it's another undermatted job.
