This may have been posted before, but it's worth a reminder. If you use the link above, you can vote for Song of the South as your favorite to come to DVD. It may be useful, somehow.

Song of theSouth

Post by WilbyDaniels »

SotS is a beautiful film about the relationship between a man and a "lost"boy. if you look at the meaning and point of the story, one would overlook the black/white issue and see the beauty in the movie. Disney release this film! After reading these posts, the world needs it!Also Uncle Remus books can be borrowedf rom any library??????Ican't figure it out!

My school's library does have Uncle Remus books, but you know how Disney is, they're trying to be the "company with a heart" that we all know and despise today. But I digress.

For heaven's sake, why don't they release this film, and have someone like Whoopi Goldberg or another person of color, remind everyone that this movie was made in 1939 and the standards then were different now. Any type of disclaimer like they have done with the Warner Bros. Golden Collection and the Tom and Jerry Spotlight Edition. Any Disclaimer will do.

C'MON DISNEY GET WITH IT!!!!!!! RELEASE "SONG OF THE SOUTH"

Thought I'd correct you since I'm OCD about stuff like this, but the movie was released in 1946, not 1939. Haha.

I heard a quote today that made me think of how Disney won't release SOTS.
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

I think that Bill meant that they started working on the film in 1939, not that it came out in 1939.

Well, according to Songofthesouth.net:
April 2, 2009

Wren's Nest: Song of the South To Be Released In 2009

According to The Wren's Nest blog (posted on April 1st), Song of the South is slated to be released this year on both Blu-ray and DVD. To quote the blog:

"Disney has decided to release the film Song of the South to Blu-ray and DVD later this year. After waiting over twenty years since it’s last theatrical release, this is enormous news.

"Not surprisingly, the decision came after the recent Disney shareholder meeting. Expect the official announcement within the next two weeks or so. ....

"We’re privy to this information now because one of the shareholders (and a friend of the Nest) thought we should know in advance in order to prepare ourselves. I’m considering buying a phone headset to avoid answering-elbow."

Rest of blog can be read here:
http://www.wrensnestonline.com/blog/dis ... d-in-2009/

Despite being posted on April Fool's Day, people have been reporting this so I have decided to post this here for novelty's sake. Well, hope springs eternal, right?
Now, I don't know about you, but this time, I will not fall for anything until (or "unless") I hear something official backing this up.

I'm not getting my hopes up, either. They seem quite indecisive. This is probably just to keep the film consistently released on different formats(remember the old DVD, and the VHS before it?)

However, if it does get released on Blu-ray, that practically confirms next year's release of Aladdin. :D

Edit: In the words of Albert: "It was an April Fool's Joke". I should've seen the date!

Well, maybe it was released around April Fool's Day, but that doesn't necessarily mean that everything announced that day or someplace thereabouts is a joke.

I can't stand this crap.

Too "offensive"? The whole world is offensive.
Why do Disney films have to be "ignorant"?
Why only show the sweet, beautiful things?

It's all about real situations that once were.
People need to get over it.

Every film and situation can be called "offensive" to some people.

I own a bootleg DVD to tide me over until it gets an official release.

I think that's what everyone here wants, an official release. It's a major part of the studio's history that's long been ignored. We want to see the film shown respect with a fully restored version, not to see it tucked away as some sort of an "embarrassment" to the studio.

Maybe just petition the studio, or something. Actually make the request that they release it. The only way the studio will listen to us is if we talk to them.

ajmrowland, Song of the South has the most requests on Amazon.com's first to know petitions.
Disney knows how much we want it, they just don't have the audacity to release it.

Okay, Jack. I usually just check my orders and shop around when I'm on Amazon. I don't pay much attention to their polls and such.

No, they admitted it was an April Fools joke. I thought it was in very bad taste for a professional site. April Fools "jokes" have no place there.

I wish they'd release the movie. There are a LOT worse movies out there that are MORE offensive.

Is the offensive part the way Uncle Rufus is portrayed? I haven't seen SoTS for over 20 years (I saw it in 1986 when I was 7).....so I don't even remember that much...
Disney Channel died when they stopped airing movies with Haley mills (Parent Trap and Pollyanna) and fun adventure movies like Swiss Family Robinson. R.I.P. the REAL Disney Channel. Date of Death: When the shows became teenie bopperish.

I did.

And it's not so much that I want an *official* release... I'd be perfectly satisfied with a GOOD bootleg of it.

The problem is that all the legit home video sources are old (the UK VHS is from the late 80s!) and they were never remastered...

I actually did buy the Japanese laserdisc (Arguably the best real source of it, minus the hard-subbed songs)... the problem is my friend's laserdisc player is on the bottom end and doesn't look as good as most other commercial ones. (And if someone like mvealf wanted to rip me a GOOD copy of that laserdisc I'd certainly be interested  )

So basically, all the existing bootlegs are from bad sources. And the main one in existence is taken from the Hong Kong laserdisc, which was itself a bootleg of the UK VHS, and not to get too technical... basically it runs 4% faster than it should and since it was recorded in NTSC it's physically impossible to revert that back to its proper speed without ghosting.

So really, all *I'm* waiting for is a better source...
