TRON 2.0, aka TR2N, the long anticipated sequel to the groundbreaking original Disney film has been picking up cast members and apparently impressing them. Olivia Wilde was quoted on the Golden Globes red carpet making some fairly lofty statements.
“It’s going to be a kind of revolution in filmmaking and film watching,” [Wilde said.]
“Now that everyone has such great entertainment systems in their house,” she continued, “they don’t need to go to the movies anymore, but we’re going to give them a reason to. Not only will it be 3-D, but they’ll be seeing things they’ve never seen before in film.”

I got the DVD a long time ago, and I'm only 18! Good movie, BTW, if a little dated. Guess it's time for an update!Kyle wrote:Hey, neither have I. I guess Im just too young (20). the only way I even knew about it was john's countless retellings of the first time he saw 3d animation (in Tron).
I'll probably see it though, especially since John has a hand in the sequel.
I thought the trailer looked cool even with no real knowledge of the original.
Anyway, the footage looks great and I can't wait to see this film!

Is there any footage other than the camera rip I mirrored?
I hope they aren't using the old-school red and blue 3D glasses, I hate those as it limits the choice of colors to red and blue. The polarized ones they use for IMAX 3D, though, are really good.
Though I hope they don't make it a corny 3D effects movie... if anyone's ever seen Spy Kids 3D, you'd know what I mean... it seems like half that movie is people throwing stuff at the screen in order to make it seem lifelike, when it really just looks lame.

I think it's safe to assume it's digital "Polarized" 3D, with 2D for 80% of cinemas it's showing in. All 3D movies these days are Polarized. That's what digital 3D is.

The website Upcoming Film Scores is reporting that Daft Punk is recording the score for "Tron 2" and has gotten confirmation of this apparently...
This will be their first film score. Interesting move. Things are coming into play. People are starting to fit in the missing pieces of the puzzle. The story is being revealed to us, page by page... or maybe that should be webpage by webpage? This film has gone from almost zero to white hot in a little more than half a year.

Is Disney insane?
The most expensive movie ever? Tron II?
My mind boggles.

To Disney's defense, the effects have to be AMAZING in a film like this...I mean, the effects in the original are great, but they look dated, so obviously they want the most high-tech effects.

For those that thought filming on the sequel to "Tron" was supposed to start filming in a couple of weeks...
You're a couple of weeks too late. That's right. They're already shooting in Vancouver as we speak. Real world stuff obviously, not the the cyber-stuff that'll be shot back on sound stages.
But action scenes and car chases are being filmed and the lensing of a sequel to the cult film is underway.
And only two years before we see it...

I'm not sure they do Amy. Look at any videogame today, and the graphics are way below CGI used in movies currently. I'm sure some non-amazing effects could be justified - I'm not saying they need to be 100% like a 360 looks wise, but I don't think Disney needs to worry about having THE best effects ever seen in a movie.
Besides, purely CGI movies can be made for about 1/4 of that budget! It's not as if rotoscoping (thanks to green screen) and camera motion matching (thanks to computer controlled cameras) is that expensive these days.
Tron 1 had simplistic effects compared to todays, but the minimal almost vector style graphics/effects it did had were ideal for the storytelling they required - they mirrored such games as Battlezone, Star Wars arcade and even home systems like the Vectrex.
I fear, like the Pirates movies (and so many other movies I could name) all the creative people will be concerned with in Tron 2 will be the effects, and not the story or characters - let's face it, that's the fate of 90+% high-budget blockbusters.

I hadn't thought of that before, but you're very right- I don't see many of the high-budget blockbusters (and I like the POTC movies and think the stories are fine), but I've definitely read reviews of the big blockbusters (for movies like Transformers, maybe), where the reviewers complain that it looks nice, but that the story is definitely lacking. A lot of reviews for Monsters vs. Aliens mentioned that.2099net wrote: I fear, like the Pirates movies (and so many other movies I could name) all the creative people will be concerned with in Tron 2 will be the effects, and not the story or characters - let's face it, that's the fate of 90+% high-budget blockbusters.
Maybe since Tron is such a known/loved film (at least cult-wise), Disney might be more careful as to making the story a good one and not just focusing on the effects, but surely the effects are a huge component of the Tron films.
I don't know much about effects, but you said:
But this is a movie about video games...I think there has to be a balance there. Most people going in to see this movie won't want to watch video-game quality (I mean, unless it's the best-looking video game ever)...they want to watch some amazing 2011-quality movie-quality special effects (don't they?). Effects definitely aren't the whole movie, but expectations are so high as far as effects go (really the expectations are really high from fans of the first movie)...I'm sure that it'll look amazing.2099net wrote:Look at any videogame today, and the graphics are way below CGI used in movies currently.

But I'm guessing the effects won't have any real bearing on videogames today. Most video games are aiming for realism, and most videogames aren't in abstract environments - look at Resident Evil 5 (in African shanty towns) or Call of Duty: Modern Warefare (in Iraq). You can't "improve" those images, without making them more realistic, which will render effects more or less redundant in the movie (you may as well film in a African shanty town for example).blackcauldron85 wrote: I don't know much about effects, but you said:But this is a movie about video games...I think there has to be a balance there. So I expect the actual videogame bits will be similar to Tron's in that they will be fairly simply, geometric designs - it is after all a shorthand for videogame graphics. Think the simplistic designs on BoomBlox for example. If you are portraying a videogame world, most people expect it to look somewhat simplistic, all grids, flat-ish shading and straight lines, so they "know" its a videogame.
In which case once again I question the need for such expense. Most likely real-life footage will have to be superimposed within such CGI, but Sin City and 300 managed such tricks with reasonable budgets for every single shot in their respective film (check out the HD DVD 300 to see this - its 99% green screen with motion tracked backgrounds), and of course lots of films have inserted CGI characters over live action, including Davy Jones in POTC.
And of course, having made a film for $300m you have to get it back! Tron may be a cult film, but Disney hasn't even pushed the DVD release that hard - one barebones release and 1 2 disc released when? 2001? 2002? And that was mainly recycled Laserdisc content. Since then the Tron 2 videogame came and went with little appreciation from game players or Tron fans... Do Disney really think that they can get their money back?

They're gonna have to really push the 30th Anniversary Edition of the first film by making a joint ad campaign for both the first film and the sequel.
As for the effects, There's already been a trailer shown at Comic-Con, and despite the video being low-quality, the CG looks nothing short of awe-inspiring(:o) down to the wheels on the light-cycles!

There's set photos now online, and it appears to be a block or so away from where I work. Might have to bring my own camera down there and get some of my own. Actually, I was on my way into yesterday and I saw a bunch of those signs directing people to the set, and was wondering what was being filmed, looks like it was Tron 2! I'm totally geeking out!

Rumors are swirling that Michael Sheen(Alice in Wonderland, Frost/Nixon) has joined the cast of the sequel to the 80's cult-classic film ever since he started twittering the other day.
He was teasing about the new project he was working on, not revealing too much and mentioning about him not playing a character that's human. He then asked people to pick their favorite Jeff Bridges film. When some picked "TRON" he mentioned how glad he was that that was some people's favorite. People began asking if his new role was in the sequel and the conversations came to a halt. Coincidence?
