Consolidating Discussion Threads?

I've had this on my mind for a while now...

So, I used the search function a second ago to find the Bambi discussion thread, and I'm not sure which one to post in! I know that it would take a while, and I'd be willing to help in any way I could, but should some discussion threads be combined somehow? It just gets confusing to have many discussion threads on the same exact topic/movie.

One thought I have is that, besides the same things possibly being discussed in numerous threads, if you want to bounce off of what other people wrote, you either need to post in many threads about the same topic, or have one thread open while posting in another and quoting from the other thread...that's just confusing! And even the Platinum Edition threads (or other DVD threads) have some discussion on the films themselves, too!

I agree! There are multiple discussions of the same movie/DVD/etc., and when you want to post in one, you have to make a decision about which one to ypdate. I know it would be a hassle to merge all the topic, but maybe Amy and I (Or some other members) could supply you with the links, and CJ, Aaron, or any other mod could just merge away.

( I wasn't going to post this until I'm all done, but I won't be all done for days, probably. (And, I'm really enjoying doing this, so if I could be allowed to finish (at least through the DACs, sequels, Pixar, other Disney animation), myself (since I have a pattern going on!) (and ideally I'd like to do Disney live-action eventually), I would really appreciate others allowing me to do it!!!) (I mean, if someone wants to do theme parks, or the Movies, TV, Music thread, I wouldn't be upset (I might eventually do Disney live-action if no one else does it before me, though).

In my opinion, the fewer threads about a film the better. Someone might make a thread about a specific topic on a movie, but in my mind, that topic should still go in the main discussion thread.

I'll make groups of threads that, to me, should be merged (but, of course, use your discretion!). I'm leaving out some threads that I'm not sure about (like ones asking for screencaps of a specific movie), so there are still some random threads out there that really should go in a broader thread, but that can be left for another time, I guess. Sometimes, though, a thread might be on a specific aspect of a movie…but the thread is still a discussion about the movie, and maybe it should be merged with the overall discussion thread for that movie.

By merging some threads, though (even though I think that they should be merged), it will get confusing to read them now, since one person’s answer to someone’s question may not be directly underneath that one person’s question…three questions (like about slipcovers or bootlegs, for example) and their answers could be mingled amongst each other in the new combined thread.

I've got to say I really don't think that every topic pertaining to a movie should be in a single thread. It may ease the decision of where a future post not deserving its own thread should go, but it sure makes for messes of threads. I know a lot of people don't even bother checking out threads that are more than a few pages long and I myself am like that to a lesser degree. And that's just threads that have been organically formed not ones that patch together a whole slew of unrelated questions and concerns. Just my two cents.

I also agree with Luke on this. I think there are definitely instances where threads should be merged but I think it would make a mess if we merge all the threads pertaining to anything that even relates to a movie (such as discussion of its songs, CDs, DVDs, characters, etc.)

Disney is already a fairly limited subject for discussion and I think it's a good thing that we find so many aspects of a single film/release to discuss. As long as a single thread is sufficiently specific and distinct from others, I think it warrants recognition as its own "topic" and thus warrants its own thread. Besides, we have to split threads into volumes after 20 pages or so anyways -- we'd end up having 10 volumes of "Snow White Discussion Thread", which doesn't really change what we have now.

Also: merging threads puts posts in their chronological order -- so the back-and-forth discussions would be disjointed now, with replies in one thread appearing as replies to comments made in another.

Just to clarify, I agree with Luke and Aaron that every thread on a movie shouldn't be thrown into one gigantic thread. I have no intentions of lumping every little thing dealing with a movie together, as that would make the threads overwhelming to read, and it would stifle discussion. There are a few (not many) of the linked threads that could be merged (those repeating the same subject), and those are the ones that I have been focusing on. Another reason I asked Amy if I could edit out the dead links, is to show which threads can stand on their own.

I don't that that every single topic pertaining to Snow White, for example, should all be in one thread...I mean, PE threads should be separate, and maybe even music threads...which I really haven't seen too many of...
But what about if there are a few general discussion threads for the same movie, like all of them aren't focusing on one topic, but just the movie in general? Like, there were multiple threads just discussing Dumbo II, and CJ merged those...I understand that if there are a few threads active at the same time period, then the conversation could get a bit confusing, but especially if they weren't being used at the same time, then maybe it makes sense to merge them. I don't know.

I'm not going to do any more, I guess, until I know if it's worth doing...

Not to pick on TonyWDA, but I'm just using this thread as an example: Luke and Aaron, in your opinion, would you have put this thread in an exsisting Sleeping Beauty movie discussion thread? Or is it fine that it is its own thread? I'm not mad at all, I'm just trying to get in your heads a bit:

I think unless a topic is really specific and a near-identical replica of an existing thread, it's fine leaving it be. I think you could easily have 30 worthwhile threads on <i>Snow White</i>'s first Platinum Edition that all talk about different things. They definitely wouldn't need to be combined.

It's not as if the forum is overflowing with new content. We get like 10 new threads a day it seems. While to some degree, encouragement to use the search engine and referring to useful past discussions does good, there are definite risks to going too far: overconsolidating, discouraging new threads, and making unique posts get lost in the shuffle. The origins of this forum were a single message board and it was a fun place to be.

Obviously the different forums here and neater organization serve purpose, but only up to a point. I don't see much use in digging up old threads and merging them together. If a new thread gives you major deja vu or someone gets a little happy on the new thread trigger, then some merging is called for. Otherwise, I say just let them be. Not only is it more work for moderators but it gets to be tricky navigating with shadows and old Google-indexed links that go nowhere.
