So Dear to My Heart dvd question

Post by Flower's Friend »

I see this edition of So Dear to My Heart on amazon that I really want to get. I think this is the one released in Brazil that will play on Dvd players in the United States.

Also on this link I saw they have a dvd of So Dear to My Heart. Does anyone here know if this dvd has everything that the one from Brazil has? It says this dvd has lot of bonus stuff. I am going to send them an email about the dvd. http://www.songofthesouth4me.net/so-dea ... heart.html

If you want a copy of "So Dear to my Heart," all you have to do is join Disney Movie Rewards. Disney Movie Rewards is free to sign up. You can use the codes inside Disney DVDs/Blu-ray Discs and redeem them for points. The current cost of "So Dear to my Heart" on DMR is 550 points. Each DVD code is usually 100 points and each Blu-ray code is usually 125 points.

Woah, really? I thought it was DMC-only.

Question, though. Is it just a disc in a paper sleeve? or do they give you a box and artwork? I guess I don't see the point of paying (or redeeming points, in this case) for just a disc. I can burn one, if that's the case.

But getting a real-looking release with boxart is another story.

Here's the lowdown...

The DMC disc is good, but lacks a very nice bonus featuring unused footage with commentary. It comes in a standard DVD case and looks like this...
Image
The Brazilian DVD from Amazon is perfectly compatible with US DVD players and includes the unused footage bonus feature. It is an official Disney release with disc artwork and a case. (My review and more info appears on Amazon)

The disc from songofthesouth4me.com is a bootleg copy of the Brazilian disc or a conversion of the British DVD (which would look worse) and includes poorly copied artwork.

If you really love this movie and want to know more about it, the Brazilian disc is for you. If you just want the movie only, the DMC disc is a good choice. Avoid the songofthesouth4me DVD unless you don't mind buying a bootleg with questionable quality.

It's in the box and actually comes with 100 DMR points.

Yes I know about the one from the Disney movie club. Also yes I will take a lot at Disney rewards.

Also yes the edition from Brazil is the one I want because of all the bonus stuff. So I think I will order that one for now. As for the one from the Disney movie club I might also get that one (I might use my reward points for that one) since I think there are two cartoons on there that are not on the edition from Brazil. This way I will have both editions :)

Is the Brazil one region free?

I know they use NTSC in Brazil, but surely it would be region 4 which would mean you'd either need a hacked DVD player or a 1:1 copy with RCE coding removed...

I believe the Brazil DVD is encoded Region 1 and 4 if I remember correctly from some posts many years back.

Region 1 + Region 4 = ??? What you think about it?

It's not unusual for Disney to have more than one encoding on a disc - Australia often gets the same discs as the UK, and so a number of region 2 and 4 PAL discs were released. They don't tend to do this now as UK is often released with Russian soundtracks/subs - but that means that those discs are probably region 2 and 5 PAL. I've not checked region encoding on discs for ages.

Disney has never and I suspect never will, do a region free/region 0 disc. Anything advertised as such is a copy.

Oh, OK, so it's dual-region. Are the menus in Portugese though?

I've seen weirder stuff though - when I went to London, I saw The Blue Man Group, and bought their DVD, which was even advertised as NTSC, but had regions 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Not sure why they'd intentionally leave America off, it was recorded in LA! (Nothing DVD Decrypter couldn't fix - still, it irked me.)

My guess is it will ask your language when first booting up. Most European Disney (and other) DVDs do this, and I understand R1 Disney DVDs are doing it now in the US.

When you pop in the Brazil disc, the first thing you'll see is a language selection page. Just choose "English" and that's all you'll see from that point.

Cool.

Granted, I've never seen or heard of this movie (aside from the people complaining that it wasn't officially released on R1 DVD), but I like collecting stuff. Is the transfer quality better on the Brazil DVD too (compared to the DMC one)? Or is it the same?

Brazil DVD and DMC DVD = same transfer. The menus are even the same. Just slightly altered on the DMC disc omitting the 25 minutes of unused footage feature and adding the two shorts.

The film transfer is a remaster of the one used for the previous laserdisc and VHS releases.

Also, it looks as if the unused footage has been restored as well. Usually that kind of stuff doesn't look as good, but on the DVD it looks just as bright and clear as the feature footage.

The transfer looks great - I don't believe the disc uses the old transfer from the early 90's, as sharpness and color and detail are all very much improved. I think, rather, its a transfer created for the aborted wide general release from the beginning of this decade.

At least Disney hasn't forgotten this movie completely for its 70th Anniversary. For a film that is considered one of Walt Disney's favorites, I wish it was better promoted and remembered. At least Danny got a second life at the Tokyo park.
