I'm super excited for this release, but I don't care much for the cover, either. I was hoping for something more along the lines of what Chitty Chitty Bang Bang got (the cover that is... I liked the cover and the booklet, but did not like the way that it unfolded and wasn't a real case, nor did I like the double-sided first disc).

What's a double-sided disc? Does that mean you have to flip it over like a record to view more stuff? If so, that seems pretty cool and conserves resources!

Kram, look at the Spaceballs DVD on my DVD shelf. That's double-sided.

I'm torn ...on first glance I liked the Mary Poppins DVD cover ... because, like many of you have said, it's more "artistic" looking and less "aimed at kids". But I showed the pic to my husband and he doesn't like it. And now neither does Aaron... so I'm starting to waffle. ;)

Oh Disney will probably alter the cover art a zillion times before it's release, so no use agonizing over it. :P

Needless to say I'm looking forward to this DVD... but I bought the current edition anyway, just in case they muck around with the movie... um, I mean, "restore" it, too much.

Don't get me wrong, I like 'artistic' looking cases, and they have their place. But for a celebratory release for Mary Poppins, I was just hoping for something that looked a bit more vibrant and magical. But yes, I'm sure this will be rethought, redesigned, rereleased, and maybe even turned upside down before all is said and done.

I think the mary poppins cover it's a very mature collector art which is very rarely seen on any Disney DVD.

Oh, I didn't think you meant any offense! So none taken or given! :lol: I was just kind of adding on to what I said the first time... I'm flattered that you say that. I respect your opinion as well. And I'm VERY pleased that Amy Grant is one of your faves, and that you like the new avatar. :D

I like the new cover

Post by Peter Pan »

I think the new dvd cover for Mary Poppins is great in that its different, its a break with the usual disney dvd covers of the past couple of years.

I bought the first dvd version in 98-99 of mary poopins then i bought the gold collection version with the very slim bonus materials. I also own the archive release on Laserdisc which has some incredible bonus materials so im anxious to compare it to the new 2disc dvd set to see what they brought over cause im sure they will (i hope) and what will be new.

Im really looking forward to this release.

Disney won't be able to do a carbon copy from the LD with "Mary Poppins", like they did with "Alice" and, to some extent, "Sleeping Beauty". The Archival edition had a few (great) bonuses, but not enough to fill a whole disc. I think the DVD will be more on the lines of the Vault Disney collection, which is a good thing - I just ask my self one thing: if Disney can dig within the vaults for their live-action films, why can't they do the same (anymore) to their extremely more popular animated films?!

Now I'm curious. Just what features did the Archive laserdisc have?

Edit: Nevermind, I've found them. To anyone else whose interested, it had:

* "Making of" Featurette
* "Hollywood Goes to a World Premiere" Featurette
* Storyboard to Film Comparisons
* Set Design Sketches
* Concept Art
* Production Photos
* Theatrical Trailer

That seems rather skimpy compared to the other Archive LD's. So, yeah, Disney's going to have to produce a lot of new featurettes for this release along with commentary.

I really hope for a commentary... it could range from just Julie or Julie & Dick to an assortment of survivng cast & crew members. While I normally like to hear crew commentaries, I think I'd much rather hear Julie's here, at least in collaboration with some crew. Then again, I'm not sure who all is still living from this.

I also think it would be cool to have a segment on here about how Beautiful Briny was intended for MP but wound up in B&BS, and about that whole sequence of events that was cut from MP.

Furthermore, there had better be some good commentaries as well as ALL the stuff from the original release... and some cool things I haven't thought of ;).

OH!... what about a book-to-movie featurette?

Hopefully we'll get a fantastic assortment of extras. There is a ton of stuff for them to pull from their archives, that's for sure. I'd love for them to include sections on the promotions, merchandise, toys, and the music recorded by so many popular artists of the day.

Here are some nice images including the cover of the soundtrack album signed by Julie & Dick and the Little Golden Book:

It is worth noting that the Gold Collection (seems) to be out-of-print already.

i don't just want to take up space, but i really liked the cover art for Mary Poppins. it does seem more artistic and i think kids will enjoy this as well. perhaps this disc is aimed more at adults since they were kids when this came out (and lets face it we all saw this as kids too), and disney is finally realizing that kids are not buy their dvds, but collector's and serious disney family fans!

but now i'm back in reality and see that there will probably be a cover change and no matter......i'm still going to buy the disc no matter what the cover looks like :oops:

Your opinion is a valuable contribution to the discussion, don't feel like you are taking up space! :) I'm with you in that I'll buy it no matter what. If I find out who to email, though, I'll let them know I'd prefer something different. I'm sure Disney releases these things partially for promotion and partially to get feedback.

Any news on a UK release date? I imagine it will in December to coincide with the stage version. I have the old double sided no extras version, so I will definatley be buying this. One thing I'm hoping is that they do a Warner Bros. and include the intermission (as with the restored versions of 'My Fair Lady' and 'Doctor Zhivago'); it's not a big thing I just think it's kinda quaint.

On the cover art issue, I think that it would be nice if they reproduced the original poster artwork for the sleeve. After all the film is being issued as a commemorative edition of the original release.

Most of all, I wish the film was getting a re-issue on the big screen, even a limited run in rep cinemas would be nice. However, I think the days of Disney re-releasing their old films in this way is long gone, which is a shame, because watching them on a thirty inch in my lounge is nowhere near as exciting.

Mary Poppins featured an intermission in its theatrical run? Didn't know that. I'm not sure I'd like that, since I'm not used to it. It would be nice to preserve that, though, as with Sound of Music... but I don't really think Mary Poppins needs an intermission.

(Kinda Off-topic: was the length of Sound of Music's intermission trimmed down for home video release?)

And as for a theatrical re-release, I think it could still happen for Poppins, but probably not until 2014 for the 50th anniversary.

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I'm not sure but I think Mary Poppins originaly had an intermission; it certainly has a definate 'second half'. Right after Mary sings 'Feed the Birds' is, I believe, where it should be. This seems like quite a nartural break in the narrative, as well as being the point where the film adopts a somewhat different tone. But I could be wrong.

With regards to 'The Sound of Music' I think the intermission is probably shorter on video. I think what you get on video is the entr'acte music which would have been played as audiences were taking their seats after buying their ice creams. I would imagine that no music was played during the 10 or 15 minutes of intermission and therefore would not be included on a video release. Once again this is only a guess, but I think a fairly logical one.
See ya real soon!
