Oliver & Company- 20th Anniversary Edition

Well, they must've been. Haven't watched the whole of the Rescuers, yet, but Dumbo never seemed to take place in a specific time, or part of America. Whereas Oliver takes place in 1988 New York City, with very contemporary songs that fit the period.

No, "Dumbo" pretty much definitely takes place in what was then contemporary... you can tell by the clothes / technology. It's just set in a circus setting.

I watched O&C with my youngest niece (5) and I think she liked it. I left it at my brother's house so his oldest could watch it (we watched it while she was at school).

At the beginning of Dumbo (or at least how I remember it) they showed the a map of the United States and the stork flies over the state of Florida. So I always assumed that Dumbo was set in Florida.

As far as time setting...it could be contemporary or slightly earlier. It's hard to tell since 20th circuses dont age significantly. I'm mean the old school circuses are dead but...well you get what I mean.

How do you know? And do you also know why it takes that long? Usually the 'smaller' Disney film comes out before the 'Platinum', also in Europe.

I saw it in a Spanish site, I can't remember right now... :/

But it makes sense. Aristocats was out in February and arrived in Portugal in February, but in Spain was out in June. Sword in The Stone was out in June, and arrived here in September.

The ones that weren't as the US release date, arrived a little bit late. Aristocats were in the same situation in Spain last year as Oliver is this year. Now, we just have to wait..

To buy or not to buy... that is the question.

I'm pondering whether to buy this new version or not. I do have the Special Edition. What's the difference between the 20th anniversary and the Special Edition, other than the new game? Is the picture quality any better or the same?

New Sneak Peeks, DMR points, and a slipcover. Also, the "Sing Along" feature is just italic subtitles on the film excerpt, rather than the actual "Sing Along Song" version used on the old VHS releases. And there's no chapter insert (but there are promotional booklets) or disc art (?).

I still have not gotten around to watch my dvd of Oliver and Company (Thanks in part to Work, College, The Internet and Nintendo).

On the Special Edition, the picture looks old too, so I guess they didn't do anything with it. A shame.

I think I might only get it if I need 100 points for DMR and I have some extra money to blow. But, I think I'll hold off on it for now.

On the other hand, with that new shiny slipcover, it'll match the rest of the DVDs...

Don't bother. There will be plenty of future DVDs that will have 100 points and they'll be DVDs you don't have yet and would be a better purchase.

And slipcovers...well, you know what I'd say about that.

Sorry guys - didn't mean to rant this much but this has been building up over time:

What I find beyond comprehension is the fact that the DVD cover doesn't use the proper logo for the film - Let alone the abomination that is the colour scheme. Oliver and Company was probably the first Disney Animated Classic to have a proper logo for publicity purposes (all the way from the poster to the start of the film) and looks ten times better than what they whipped up (probably so they could save on translation).

I'm not particularly happy with the direction that DisneyDVD packaging is heading (even though I'm going Blu, which has it's own problems) - the "badge" logos that they are going out of their way to make for every film with more than one word in the title just look lazy and cheap compared to actually researching and designing proper cover art.

I've been watching a lot of my collection lately and EasyFind and it's bloody icons have been really, really bugging me, especially when it comes to 2-Disc collectors sets as the second disc always seems to be out of logical order compared to sets like TENG because it's now fitting the content into a pre-defined order instead of creating an order around the needs of the content. Fast Play is something that you click once and it no longer bugs you. EasyFind is there, constantly reminding you of it's presence.

(One last thing that's bugging me is Region 4's sudden switch from following the UK to following the US, such as redesigning the spines to remove the "Walt Disney" and putting the DisneyDVD logo at the top with a huge FastPlay down the bottom)
