Actors Discussion Series: Anne Hathaway

Post by PeterPanfan »

I thought I'd start up a discussion series for actors, much like the musicians, Disney films, and Broadway musicals ones.

We can discuss each actor in the appropriate thread. A new thread will be made weekly, but the older threads will still be open for discussion.

Anne Jacqueline Hathaway (born November 12, 1982) is an American actress. She made her acting debut in the 1999 television series Get Real, but her first prominent role was in Disney's family comedy The Princess Diaries (starring opposite Julie Andrews), which established her career.

She continued to appear in family films over the next three years, with lead roles in Ella Enchanted and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004. Hathaway would later venture away from the "G-rated" image her early acting career bestowed upon her, starring in the adult-themed films Havoc and Brokeback Mountain. She later starred in The Devil Wears Prada, opposite Meryl Streep; Becoming Jane, in which she portrays Jane Austen, and Get Smart, opposite Steve Carell. In 2008 she earned widespread critical acclaim for her star turn in the film Rachel Getting Married, for which she won numerous awards and is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.

Her acting style has been compared to that of Judy Garland and Audrey Hepburn and she cites Hepburn as her favorite actress and Streep as her idol. People magazine named her one of 2001's breakthrough stars, and in 2006, she was listed as one of the world’s 50 Most Beautiful People.

What's your favorite Anne Hathaway film? Mine is a tie between The Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada. I've seen all of her films sans Havoc, Brokeback Mountain, Rachel Getting Married, and Bride Wars.

Let the discussion begin!

I love The Princess Diaries. I got the sequel and still haven't watched it yet...but I will watch it soon! The original is one of my favorite Disney live-action films (not in my top 3, but close).

I haven't seen anything else that Anne has been besides Ella Enchanted, which I also really enjoy. I'm interested in some of her other movies, and I'll get around to seeing them at some point, I guess.

I do think that she's a good actress, and she's gorgeous.

Huh... That photograph doesn't seem to be trying to sell anyone on her acting ability. Which is funny, since Disney was clearly trying to cultivate her into one of their embarrassing stable of Child Stars with the Princess Diary movies. I tried to watch the first one, hell it even had Heather Matarazzo in it (which is just pure class), but it was awful. Just awful. I sincerely hope the sequel improved upon the formula.

In fact, as soon as I heard she'd been cast in Brokeback Mountain, as a substancial character, I immediately thought- I've underestimated her somehow. And clearly I had, as The Devil Wears Prada proved beyond the shadow of a doubt. Then, seeing her in that Saturday Night Live skit. She's got a future, that's for sure. But I feel like it's too premature to call her "the new" anyone. She has more to prove and more to accomplish. But I'd say she's got a better chance than just about anyone else.

She wasn't even a child when she made that movie Lazario, and the first was actually pretty good in comparison to the sequel. She has been consistent throughout her career.

The. Devil. Wears. Prada!

One of my favorite movies EVER!!!

Anne is just hilarious, beautiful, smart, and talented! And, oh my god, she can sing too! And she dresses amazingly!

I love everything I've seen her in, which I've only seen a handful of her films (The Devil Wears Prada, Princess Diaries, Brokeback Mountain, Get Smart, Ella Enchanted, Hoodwinked).

But I cannot wait to see Rachel Getting Married! And the only reason I'd see Bridewars is for Anne, cause I don't care much about Kate Hudson, lol.

This girl can do no wrong in my eyes (yet) and she is easily and definitely one of my favorite actress' (actresses?) around these days.

I don't have much to say about AH - I neither love her nor do I hate her. However, I was once told that I didn't particularly look like her, but that she and I share similar mannerisms. Still not really sure about that one ...

Everyone has one bad film (or more) in their agenda. I care more about the legacy than the few mistakes they have made.

The only film, that I've seen, that makes me notice Hathaway is The Devil Wears Prada, though I saw the film more for Meryl Streep than her. I hated The Princess Diaries, its sequel, Ella Enchanted and Bride Wars. And I remember her only having a very small part in Brokeback Mountain, although that does show she wouldn't be opposed to starring in risque films.

Still, I think she has potential, depending on her choice of films.

The Princess Diary movies, +Get Smart. Funny movie. Ella Enchanted, not so much.

Also, anyone catch her at the Oscars? She was dancing with Hugh Jackman!

I loved her skit with Jackman it was hilarious. I noticed she changed her dress for the actually show, I kind of liked the red carpet one better but maybe she couldn't dance in that one.

I love Anne Hathaway! Ever since I saw her in "The Princess Diaries," I knew she had a certain star quality. I just finished watching "The Devil Wears Prada" on FX, and she has definitely come a long way since playing Princess Amelia.

I recommended everyone to watch Rachel Getting Married, it has best performance by Anne so far, and you can't help but empathise with her character, and I personally can really relate to Zoey (her character), we both seem to be social outcasts that are sometimes a burden to our families, but maybe that's why I like that movie so much, I'm not sure many people besides me are like that.

I just watched it tonight. Really liked it but, uh, her characters name was Kym, not Zoey. :p
