Kenai is never a "villain", he's a boy transformed into an animal and informed by a woman he has been cursed because of the wrong he's done and now he must do penance and become a man and learn the power of love. Hmm...what does that remind you of? You mean, like, oh, I don't know...the Beast in Beauty and the Beast?
Try telling that to Koda  Seriously, Kenai was an ignorant and reckless person who got his brother killed and blamed it on the bear and went out and hunted her down and killed her. I'd say that's pretty villainous. What's it called again? Oh yeah pre-meditated murder I believe would be an accurate term for his actions.

Also on the subject of love, he needed to learn to love to become a man pre-transformation. Being turned into a bear and learning to love that way wasn't the original intent in all technicality. His actions made his brother intervene and set him down that path. Also, learning to love seemed to happen along the way he went to that Salmon Run with the intent of trying to find his brother to find out how to get transformed back as far as I know he didn't know he had to learn to love for the transformation to happen.

I guess it's obvious I finally got around to watching this

And then Kenai grew a big shaggy beard and claimed he wanted to be a hip-hop artist instead, while having an awkward moment on Letterman...

That's true, but I agree with Rudy Matt than having a protagonist that's portrayed as somewhat villainous is hardly an original concept for Disney.
