Post by schoollover »

I just wanted toask if you had to choose a top line of the disney classics on dvd. What would they be called , how would they be treateand promoted, how many discs and what types of bonus features. Would they get thearetical rerealeases. what titles and how would the release schedule go. all these and if you can think of more =, great by the way since some people hsere seem to have a nickname, you can call me sl for schoollover.

I wouldn't waste my time with useless labels for select titles. I'd give ALL the DAC 2 disc sets and just call them "2-Disc Special Edition[s]". All would be given equal and great treatment on DVD. By great I mean all the bells and whistles (multiple commentaries/trivia tracks, documentaries, galleries, trailers).

by the way I wanted to post my line. My line will be called disney miracles. These are the films thgat saved the company when they needed it. They will get thearetical rereleases for their dvd release. It will be 3 discs

disc 1- the movie the way it was originally supposed to be with the original colors but just removing the grain and the other negatives

disc 2- A lot making of and documentaries and enough to match atlantis and swiss family robinson in quality.

Disc 3- More vintage material, still galleries, deleted material and tributes. also a couple of games to keep the family happy.

they will be put in a cardboard open like a book slipcover.

The schedule will be

March 2001: Dumbo
October 2001:Snow White

March 2002: 101 dalmatians
October 2002:Cinderella

March 2003:The Great Mouse Detective
October 2003: The Lion King

They could also be one a year, and they will all have gift sets and huge promotions.

Are you ready? I once day-dreamed my insanely never going to happen but perfect film release idea.

"Definitive Collection"

Has a cardboard pop-up slipcover that’s got different art than DVD case cover
Reversible DVD case cover with different art on both sides

...so a total of 3 different designs for covers

The slipcovers form a massive mural picture when stacked in the right order next to each other of all the characters together

A fold-out diorama full-color insert
Locking clasp case
Black colored case
No ads on disk, this dates a film release
No ad inserts - these look cheap
Special signed and numbered sheet for disk, like it's a collector's item
All previous supplemental material, bonus features, shorts, games, etc. included from vhs, betamax, laserdisc, dvd, hd dvd and blu-ray plus some new stuff

I would begin the ‘definitive collection’ a line on the format successor to Blu-ray that has image as perfect as possible and the latest sound. It would literally be every previous release ever in one for each film. It would unclude all previous games, bonus features and supplements plus no ads to make it a release warranting no more after - timeless.

Release all Disney animated TV shows uncut, all episodes as part of the defineitve collection.

Also release Song of the South and Fantasia full and uncut.

There'd be several discs. The disk with the fast play on it would be the most accepted version - the version edited to be family friendly. A separate, clearly marked (for idiot parents) disk would have extended cuts - none of the stuff cut from Make Mine Music, Fantasia, The Black Cauldron, etc.

End the moratorium policy immediately.

Open the archives and massively reveal old films, putting working versions of the films on their definitve collection release. We'll see American Dog, Kingdom of the Sun, Rapunzel Unbraided, etc.

I would re-release the sequels/deriviatves as well, giving them the same treatment of having all previous features included, but rename them so that they don’t get implied as sequels. Like Bambi II is a midquel so the name would go back to "Bambi and the great prince of the forest". I would explain the name change on the back - “formerly known as bambi II” and explain how it works “this midquel shows more of what happened in the middle of the orginal film”.

In a separate but complementary line to the definitive collection, have the “continuity editions” – these splice together all continutieis, it places Bambi 2 inside Bambi 1, makes the beauty and the beast films run together/in order, etc.

I'd check to see if any film got far enough along to release it – like Disney princess enchanted tales 2. Supposedly its done but vaulted. I'd release it finally.

All previous versions of each film would be released. Like Beauty and the Beast - I'd have the work in progress, original, IMAX re-coloring/additional scene, the 3D version. They'd all be there. Since currently Blu-ray is 50 gigs, if these were on Blu's successor - there'd be more than enough space.

Also, every aspect ratio ever would be included. The fullscreen cut, widescreen cut, theatrical ratio, animated ratio.

Includes all previous versions – tv, theatrical, vhs, dvd, laserdisc, etc. for your choice

In this way, no one could ever say their favorite/preferred version of the film wasn't re-released.

Basically with the definitive collection there’s the three aspect ratios:

OFR = originally filmed
ODR = originally drawn
OTR = original theatrical

Plus any special editions like the updates to lion king and beauty and the beast are included along with the absolute original print

Then, on another disc, is the uncut and unedited version. It features anything deemd unsuitable and edited out over the years:

The happy minister is happy again in little mermaid
Mcleach has his pretty girl back in the jeep
Sunflower is a slave again
Esmeralda bears it all again
We see blood in sleeping beauty
We see the acid bleach and eilowny nude scene
Martin and mcoys scene returns

….everything and anything is here. But since its uncut and unedited, theres brief intros. To explain whats ‘bad’ about each film. These can be turned off in the setup. Also, to stop children from accessing these, the disc uses your player flash memory. Theres a code system like the ps2 parental password, theres four options:

Always lock uncut & unedited film on this disc
Never lock uncut & unedited film on this disc
lock uncut & unedited film on this disc this time only
unlock uncut & unedited film on this disc this time only

…this way enthusiasts get the ‘true version’ – but parents can control it

but to ensure that parents don't botch the fact that there's the 'family friendly' version on one disk and an uncut version on another, in giant, bold, necessarily ugly text it'll read "CHILDREN'S VERSION" and "UNCUT VERSION"...there could be no way they'd make a mistake

Locking clasp case
   Are you serious? I hate those locking cases... all that ends up happening is people break the locks off!
Why would you need a locking case!

But otherwise, I like the idea of having all the versions and aspect ratios. Maybe just not all on one disc.

My idea for Beauty and the Beast was to have 3 discs:
The first disc is the OTV, and it would have the option to watch the added "Human Again" sequence inserted
The second disc would be the "work in progress"... and the REAL WIP, not the screwed up one from the DVD
The third disc would have all the special features.

As far as aspect ratio, I'd probably just put it in 1.66:1 but that's up for speculation if I could find room for a cropped one or whatever...

And by the way, "Definitive Collection" was already used for a laserdisc release of the original Star Wars Trilogy ;)

I know it sounds silly, but the lock clasps feel more prestigious to me - like unlocking a diary or a treasure chest.

And I was unclear in whether all the versions of a movie would be on a DVD or not. For sure, the uncut/uncensored version would be separate but I'm not sure about the rest.

I dunno, I think those locks serve no purpose whatsoever. Usually when I get movies in those I move them to normal cases without the locks.

Disney tried them for a while... now it seems they're back to non-locking cases :D

Look at Chronicles of Narnia... that has a closing slipcover that looks like you're pulling it out of a vault... (I don't remember if that has the locking case though, I think it does :( )

I remember for the longest time, Disney used to bill their VHS releases of their major animated classic as the Masterpiece Collection, and included a similar style front and spine artwork, I think they stopped at either Tarzan or Emperor's New Groove (don't remember for sure).

I would bring that back, in both DVD and Blu-ray form. And each title should be two discs, with a ton of extras that'll include commentaries, new and vintage behind the scenes featurettes, deleated scenes, original promotional material (ie. poster and trailer galleries), interactive games and even throw in a digital copy. I know it seems unlikely as studios don't seem to want to put much effort into their DVDs anymore, but if they gave me unlimited resources to do so, that's what'll happen.

My line should have the following:

-All new HD Transfers restored from the original negatives.
-Remastered sound featuring English 5.1 DTS, English, French, and Spanish 5.1 Surround EX, and original theatrical soundtracks (up to mid 90's)
-THX Certified and Optimizer
-Anamorphic Widescreen
-Full Screen for films presented, shot, and created in that format.
-Audio Commentaries (Old and New)
-TONS of Extras, featuring new stuff and everything else from previous DVD and Laserdiscs releases.
-An ultimate documentary on a film or film series which features interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and whatnot
-Deleted Scenes restored from original vault materials and elements and remastered sound
-Rare material recently found, restored, and remastered
-Vintage Featurettes, commercials, appearences, and parodies
-Trailers and TV Spots from Around The World
-Presented in their Uncut and Unedited form with original theatrical version as a certain bonus for some films.
-Blu-Ray will be 6 times better

Wow... for all my critisizing of Disney DVD, not only am I psychotically glad someone posted something like this... But I also find the idea of being personally responsible for a line of Disney DVDs absolutely terrifying! Perhaps that needs to be elaborated on (but, really- I think you know it doesn't):

We all want "perfect" editions of each movie. Some of the animators and creators...some of these people (I HOPE) are still alive. After watching the Bambi bonus features, they got a very surprising amount of animators to talk about the movie. Were all of them alive in '04/05?? If any of them are still alive, I wouldn't want to kill them or stress them out, but I would insist to the DVD production / budget / technical crew that we need interviews. It would probably drive these people crazy being interviewed for hours every couple weeks or whatever about yet another movie they worked on. Already with me being a huge horror fan, I just don't know how the directors who keep talking about these movies do it. So, knowing their commitment and being ignorant of how Disney produces their DVDs, I would probably order the "team" to just keep going and going and going and going. If not the interview-ees, I would probably drive the staff doing the audio and video remasters insane.

So remember about my contribution here - I'm totally ignorant of how the DVDs that do come out are put together. Maybe "My" Disney-DVD company/corporation will go bankrupt quickly. I don't know. And frankly, since this is just a post on a message board, I don't care either. Also, I'm going to break with the entire theme of this thread by posting all the releases I would release under the "Disney DVD banner."

Keep in mind, for many of these, I'm posing the hypothetical situation that these movies have been in the process of being digitally cleaned-up, etc, for years before being released.

Wave / Line 1: Animated Classics Double Features
- the purpose of this is to serve up the movie for family, strict-budget buyers only, not intended to be the true definitive releases for collectors

*all priced around $24.99
*2-Discs, 1 movie per disc
*choice of Widescreen (original t.a.r.) or Full Frame (only for movies originally filmed / exhibited in Widescreen)
*White Case, fold-out, velcro-snap (think New Line's John Waters Collection-2'packs)
*none of the films are edited for "content" in any way, shape, or form!
*front cover with split-line down center, original video covers on each side for each film
*each disc is one-sided, top half is newly created artwork featuring good renditions of popular characters
*almost all films are THX-enhanced, amazing restorations, digitally perfected audio and video quality (the newer ones won't require as much work as the older films, so fewer of those will be THX-ed, we want to save SOME money here)
*discs are programmed to allow you to exit out of beginning FBI Warning / Company logos, by pressing either Menu/Main Menu/Top Menu or chapter-forward skip. But not Stop...until you get to the menu (which only takes a second)
*extras will include the often lame or boring Disney Storybook feature, all new Disney TV-show pop singers' renditions of classic songs, the frustrating games, and new promos for new TV shows and movies and features online or at the theme parks. The collector's editions will include the truly meaty bonuses. One of the reasons this line is coming out first is to give us time to truly begin amassing the lengthy bonuses for the multi-disc editions and to give the participants years worth of time to breathe instead of crunching every single thing into a few months or a year
*extras for the newer Disney movies (like Lion King, Hunchback, Hercules, etc through time) will include more original promotional stuff. Since they're newer movies, the cast and crew will be alive longer and the materials will require less work to remaster / restore

Wave / Line 2: Family Classics Double Features
- the purpose of this is to serve up the movie for family, strict-budget buyers only, not intended to be the true definitive releases for collectors

*all priced around $22.99
*2-Discs, 1 movie per disc
*Original Theatrical Aspect Ratio only
*White Case, fold-out, velcro-snap (think New Line's John Waters Collection-2'packs)

Wave / Line 4: Disney Animal Adventures Collection

*each is priced around $35.95
*4-Discs, 1 movie per disc
*Original Theatrical Aspect Ratio only
*White Case, 3 fold-out sides, velcro-snap (think Little House on the Prairie season boxsets)

*each disc is one-sided, top half is silver or gray with original title-logo font and technical disc/film information printed
*discs are programmed to allow you to exit out of beginning FBI Warning / Company logos, by pressing either Menu/Main Menu/Top Menu or chapter-forward skip. But not Stop...until you get to the menu (which only takes a second)
*extras will be limited to original promotional materials only

Wave / Line 5: Disney Historic Adventures Collection
- the purpose of this is to serve up the movie for family, strict-budget buyers only, not intended to be the true definitive releases for collectors

*each is priced around $44.95
*3-Discs, 2-sided, 1 movie per disc side
*Original Theatrical Aspect Ratio only

Don't forget the cool 3D animated menus! I miss those. AND Blu-ray releases with cine-explores.

Oh, and Lazario. You got the wrong year for 101 Dalmatians. It was released in 1960, not 1961.

I think I would go back to calling them Masterpiece Editions.. complete with the holographic Disney castle. And pretty embossed shiny logos. I always loved those.

Ya I hope I get lots of money to make that happen

As for features um... I'd prolly include everything from previous laserdisc editions, and then some (trailers and all that good stuff).

EDIT: Gah, MrIncredible beat me to it! Oh well, as they say, great minds think alike.

-Vintage Featurettes, commercials, appearences, and parodies
-Trailers and TV Spots from Around The World
-Presented in their Uncut and Unedited form with original theatrical version as a certain bonus for some films.
