I have finally seen it yesterday. Wanted to wait until I had a Blu-Ray player, and I didn't want to buy the same title twice. I loved it. Wall-E and EVE leaving the planet and going into outer space made sense to me, and it didn't feel abrupt at all. The environmental issues and critique on consuming were great from an adult point of view. The satirizing may not get to the children but the adults will certainly get them. Also the many references to sci-fi movies were great. 2001: A Space Odyssey was referenced a lot.
I also liked the innovative camera work they did. Helicopter shots moved as real helicopter shots do, panning shots looked correct, and the focusing was much better than what I've seen before. Definitely looked great on Blu, and the sound was excellent as well. Can't wait to see it for the second time.

I've always said it's like animated features sit at the little kids table now. I doubt we'll ever see a best picture nomination again like we did for Beauty and the Beast.

If the Academy weren't as incredibly biased as they are, it could've gotten a nomination regardless of the Best Animated category... it's perfectly valid for a film to be nominated in both, just as something could be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Picture.

Best Animated is a ghetto category; everyone knows it, and I doubt anyone really cares who wins. The Academy created it after B&tB was nominated for Best Picture, to make sure they'd never have to "lower" themselves by doing it again.

I thought WALL-E's "Best Original Screenplay" nomination was best described in an article I read on suite101.com:

WALL-E did receive nominations in 5 other categories: Sound Mixing, Editing, Original Score (for composer Thomas Newman), Best Original Song ("Down to Earth" by Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman) and, most interestingly, Best Original Screenplay.

Should the Andrew Stanton film win that last category, it will be a tacit admission by AMPAS that WALL-E should have been in the Best Picture race, and possibly even have won.

The "winning" comment is maybe a bit of a stretch, but there's no doubt that WALL-E deserved a Best Picture nod. The way the academy is going, though, that's starting to mean less and less, anyway. It's hard to take such a biased institution seriously.

Peter Gabriel, the guy behind Wall-E's theme "Down to Earth" has decided not to perform the song at the ceremony after he learned he would perform it for only 65 seconds in a medley.

65 SECONDS? I know the Academy has done medleys before, but I thought they were all full length.

I think it means he would only get to play it for 65 seconds, then another artist would play their song for 65 seconds, or some other amount of time...the whole medly's longer than 65 seconds!

I know the medley is longer than 65 seconds. What I mean is that the Awards have done medleys and have been pretty long, giving the performers enough time to sing their song.

Yeah, well the movie's great, but they do come on a little strong for a movie that wasn't quite intended to preach an idea.

Sci-Fi Fun Fact: They actually got Sigourney Weaver to voice the ship's computer.

Pixar has that track record. You know, the one where they're both innovative AND they push whatever video format to its limits. Let's face it, they rock! I wonder if they'll ever use that one camera technique, involving the use of a physical VR camera, that some new animated movies use to get the shots.

Well, it was the main criticism I read about the film, so a lot of people (also here on this forum, I believe) felt that way.

^Well, I haven't heard that one before.

Anyway, the Academy's being stupid, but they also seem to be in a tight spot. They have chosen Sundays of all nights during the week. They have a broadcast schedule(but who really cares about what comes on afterwards?) and they also want to make sure that not-so-big name actors/actresses/ filmmakers get the attention they deserve. But they're being biased to all big awards by nominating/awarding only serious movies. I like to say that in order to win the BP category , a movie does not have to have a plot, good editing, or a well-constructed screenplay. All it needs is a dramatic actor, maybe a death scene or two, romance/sex, close-up shots of random ppl frowning, a bit of someone yelling angrily, and have it all put together with music. Viola! A Best Picture. Wall-E should've gotten the nomination, and if it doesn't win Best Screenplay,.....well, someone is going to mysteriously disappear.

To be honest, when I saw Jack Black I thought Kung Fu Panda would win.

His joke about taking his Dreamworks earnings and betting them on Pixar was priceless.

The video in which Wall.E watches the other animated movies was really cool, but very weird to see them all together at the end.
