I ressurect this!
It is not that old, but BUMP!
Anyway, this is my 10:
10. Sister Act (I know, this particular movie is not Disney, but it feels like a musical of the Renassiance. If it is, this movie is definitely my favorite live action movie from this time period. It has something for everyone. From funny lines like "If this turns into a Nun's bar, I am out of here," and "How come convents don't have Butter Pecan ice cream?" For the inspired songs, like Hail Holy Queen and I Will Follow Him, while they were more or less remakes, they were wonderful! The villain was also very evil, I mean, who would attack Sisters? Very Good!)
9. Pete's Dragon (This is a very underrated Disney masterpiece. I loved the humor and songs in this movie, and also Helen Reddy as Nora.)
8. Music of the Heart (This is also another great live action movie! While most may not consider it Disney, it also feels like a Disney movie. The music, while it may not be sung, is great. It definitely has the most original script.)
7. Cinderella (Now I am finally in the Animated movies! This is certainly the most whimisical of Disney features, with the mice. They hog up most of the screen time but are much needed humor! The fairy godmother was also a great source of humor as well. Humor is only part of this movie's charm. Like the above, it also had great music. I always enjoyed this movie!)
6. Hercules (While it may not be the best Disney movie, it is definitely the most fun to watch! It also had wonderful humor. I loved Philotetes and Meg. Hades is the funniest Disney villain in my opinion. This also had a nice script.)
5. The Little Mermaid (I loved the musical score for this movie, especially at the beginning. While it may not be true to the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, it was a good change!)
4. Legend of Sleepy Hollow (It may not be a Feature Film, but it was very good! Bing Crosby was just as good in this as he was in Holiday Inn, which is my favorite outside of Disney movie. It had a nice story, which was complemented by the great musical score.)
3. The Old Parent Trap (This is my Aunt's favorite Disney movie, and I agree with her! It had a great story, nicely complemented by the wonderful performance of Haley Mills and who else but Haley Mills, who is my favorite tween star for Disney, eat your heart out, Miley! It also has a nice musical score and villain.)
2. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (It is definitely one that I enjoy when I was younger because I remember acting out this, Sleeping Beauty, and Mary Poppins when I was a child. I also like this movie not only because the reasons I mentioned above, it was the first animated feature, so I bet that is Walt's first credential.)
1. Beauty and the Beast (This is obviously my most favorite Disney movie! It is everything a Disney movie should be. With great songs, great characters, a good story, a menacing villain, it is no wonder this was nominated for Best Picture!)
Honorable Mentions (no reasons why, though, sorry!)
10. Sister Act 2
9. 101 Dalmatians
8. Bedknobs and Broomsticks
7. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
6. Song of the South
5. Summer Magic
4. Pocahontas
3. Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken
2. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
1. Mary Poppins

My top 10 DACs:
1. Lilo & Stitch
2. Aladdin
3. Mulan
4. Cinderella
5. The Little Mermaid
6. The Emperor's New Groove
7. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
8. One Hundred and One Dalmatians
9. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
10. Fantasia / Fantasia 2000
If I was listing my favorite Disney movies (not just DACs), I would probably fit Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Incredibles, Cars (I know) and Toy Story & Toy Story 2 in there somehow. Unfortunately, that would be too hard of a list to put together, as it's hard enough for me to just choose from the DACs.

1.) The Little Mermaid- I always use to watch this movie with my brother on Sunday afternoons haha, it became a tradition. Ariel is one of the most relatable heroines in the Disney canon. Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle are great secondary characters and all add different flavors of humor in the film. Prince Eric is Disney's first great prince. And Ursula is one of the best villains of all time, she is outrageously flamboyant but still very menacing which isn't easy for a villian to be but she does it VERY well haha. The songs are all brillant and instantly recongnizable and the animation is beautiful. Overall my fave Disney film!
2.) Beauty and the Beast- I am a sucker for a good love story and this one is just wonderful. Belle is a great heroine strong and intelligent but still keeping the classic fairy tale heroine aspects. The Beast is also a great character going through a wonderful character arch. And Gaston is the most unique villain of Disney going from a simple douch to a full fledge baddie. And all the supporting characters are wonderful. Like "Mermaid" the songs are great and memorable and the animation is wonderful. Overall a perfect love story, plus the film has parallel's to phantom!!!!!
3.) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs- Disney's first and still one of their best. Snow White is a classic character and I feel people are always to hard on her, she is sweet, kind and loving, too bad there aren't more people like her today. All of the dwarfs, most notably Doc, Grumpy, Bashful and Dopey are all wonderful characters and fun to watch. And the Queen is tied with Ursula as my fave villian. She is glamorous, intruiging and scary. Her transformation scene is one of my all time favorite movie moments! The songs are simple but memorable and there all classics and the animation, even by todays standards is wondeful. This film has alot of heart and you can tell everyone who worked on it put there all into every moment of it.
4.) The Hunchback of Notre Dame- I love this movie it is so powerful and I can't see how anyone would call it one of Diseny's worst films. Quasimodo is my favorite Disney hero, Esmerelda is a great heroine and Frollo is one of the greatest villains to ever grace the silver screen. The animation is beautiful and the songs, for the most part, are fantastic. The gargoyles and their song are silly and uneccesary but they add the Disney touch. Overall one of the most powerful films from Disney.
5.) Aladdin- Another great love story. Aladdin himself is up there as one of the most relatable and likable Disney characters. Abu, the Magic Carpet and the Genie are all fantastic side kick characters. Jafar is a great villian, if only for the fantastic voice work by Jonathan Freeman, that laugh
, Jasmine irks me a bit at times but she is tolerable. The animation and music are wonderful and overall the ultimate under dog story!
6.) The Rescures- This is the most under appreciated film in Disney. It has all the heart of the Walt era films and a wonderful story and characters. Bernard and Miss Bianca are one of my fave Disney pairs. They're cute, funny and are romantic but not over the top. Penny is one of the most sympathetic characters ever. She is sweet but sassy and you can't help but root for her. Medusa is the most unfairly underrated villians. She is entertaining but hateable and the amazing Geraldine Page is wonderful in the role. And Snoops i s a fun side kick
The songs are also cute and heart warming. Overall a wonderfully heartwarming tale that delivers laughs, tears and a warm Disney feel by the end.
7.) Alice in Wonderland- A film I've always loved. I love the Alice stories in general and anything having to do with them. Alice is a prim and proper character and a tad lippy but still I find her funny. All of the characters are great. Mosdt notably the Mad Htter and March Hare, the Cheshire Cat and the Queen of Hearts. ANd poor Bill the lizard. The animation is great, I love the colors. Overall a film I have always personally enjoyed.
8.) Cinderella- A classic. Cinderella is the most loved heroine and she is sweet and intelligent. She i s aware of her situation and isn't afraid to stand up for herself but is still very vulnerable and wanting love from her step family. I despise Lady Tremaine the nastiest Disney villian of all. She needed a nice kick in the balls at the end! The mice are lovable and like Snow White, the songs are simple but classics. And the animation is again gorgeous. A true classic in every right.
9.) The Lion King- Although a tad overrated, it still is a great film. The opening and ending sequences are epic. The animation is great. The music is great but the only songs I really like to listen to repeatdly are "Circl of Life" and "Be Prepared". The rest are nice but I can only take so much of them. Scar is also the only character I enjoy watching repeatdly. Rafiki and Zazu and the heyneas as well. Timon and Pumba are cool but can be grating haha. And Simba is ok but not one of my favorites. Over all I love it for it's animation, villain, music and secondary characters.
10.) Sleeping Beauty- Like Lion King it is great but a tad overrated. The animation and music is beautiful but the story and characters suffer for it. The good fairies and Maleficent shine but Aroura is the blandest herione imo. Phillip is better than Snow and Cindy's princes but still not as good as Eric imo. THe climactic battle at the end is classic and "Once Upon a Dream" is one of the most beautiful songs. SO I like this one for the same reasons as I like LK.
Honorable Mentions
Pocahontas
Mulan
Tarzan
The Emperor's New Groove
The Sword in the Stone
101 Dalmations

1. Pinocchio- Pinocchio has been and still is my favorite all time Disney movie since I was a little kid. I remember always singing "Hi-diddle-dee" and finding it a great song to sing. The movie was also dark and creepy in numerous occasions. Most would say the Pleasure Island scene but that actually didn't faze me. What did creep me out was near beginning when it was night and clocks start ticking and Jiminy's face pan up and his eyes follow back and forth. It just gave such a ominous and serendipitous symphony vibe. The other not so scary but still creepy in a way, is the toys in Gepetto's show. The place was drawn so beautifully and lush. Had such great texture to it. And the wooden toys felt like they will come to live and haunt you. The art was that damn good.
As I grew older I started appreciate the movie even more as I start take notice of things I didn't before. One is Pleasure Island. That alone give how dark this film is. The kids turning into donkeys and never will have a future is depressing and almost true to real life. I also like how brutal and real the coachman is. He not your flamboyant and obvious Disney villain where they must wear or have "evil colors" to emphasize it, nor have any evil appearance to show so. He look like a jolly chubby man. Until he showed his true face and later during the shipping dock. I also like how the villain suffered no consequences for their action. It shows again how brutal real the real world is and Pinocchio's journey is to help him know what to expect out there when he does become a real boy and how deal with it. It's a pretty excellent movie.
2. Hunchback of Notre Dame- Next is Hunchback of Notre Dame. When I was little, I didn't really gave much thought and enjoyment into this movie. Mostly cause I hardly understood what was going on. As an adult, I love this movie a lot. Like Pinocchio, gives a taste of reality and maturity that you normally don't experience with other Disney movies. The characters were all enjoyable and I was able to like a lot of them like Frollo, Esmeralda, Quasimodo, Phoebus etc. Only one I found annoying is Hugo. My favorite scene like most people said, is Hellfire scene. Probably the best Disney villain song till even now. It's so powerful and haunting(not to mention sexy...). Speaking of, the music itself is powerful with it's Latin choir to help match the time era of the movie.
Though the disney version is water down and way different from the book, I think it’s still worthy of it’s merits enough to still convey the essential mood of the story. Like the book, the movie’s main focus and story revolve around Esmeralda. Something That you really have to look into and the Berlin play made more apparent. I could go on, but this is my second favorite Disney movie.
3. Fantasia/Fantasia 2000/Destino- I put these together as I consider them together. Let’s start with the first one: Fantasia. This is an artistic new movement and one I really appreciate for it’s difference compare to others. There are few main segment pieces that really stood out and I like. The first one is Rite of Spring. God this piece was so badass and awesome. I consider this probably the most serious and brutal of all disney sequences. The way T-Rex fight and own the Stegosaurus and the Dinosaur’s extinction was jaw dropping and quite harsh for a disney brand. This is also the longest piece in Fantasia as well. I also find the colors very cool with it’s very earth tone and red. All in all, Dinosaurs are fucking JAWsome.
The other one I like Is Night on Bald Mountain. What awesome is that Chernabog con convey so much dialogue and expression just by pure body language alone. The design is also classic. It’s takes the main perception image most people have of a devil, and making it dramatic and imposing along with it’s own interpretation of the facial features.
In Fantasia 2000, I like 3 of them: Rhapsody in Blue, Piano Concerto No. 2, Allegro Opus 102(aka Steadfast Tin Soldier), and Firebird suite 1919 version. In Rhapsody in blue, I love the 1930’s Al Hirschfeld art. It really works and was able to make everything fluid and cartoony.
I like the music and story of the Tin Soldier one. With the exception of ending, it pretty much follows the original piece fairly closely. One thing I didn’t understand is art direction choice. Why were they using CGI for the 3 main toys characters but everything else in 2D? Not that I hate it, just don’t understand the purpose or choice of it.
Last one, the music is simply mind blowing. I love this music piece the best. The whole nature death rebirth symbolism really works well. Everything about it was well animated from the firebird to the spirit’s rejoice of restoring the forest. One thing I thought to myself: That Elk must have some serious magic powers in that breath of his.
As for Destino...... MIND BLOWN. This is some epic shit.
4. Alice in Wonderland- Alice in Wonderland is another oddball Disney movie I tend to love a lot. The plot may seems to go as from one episodic to another, But what really important and shine is the characters. I have to say I love all the characters. First off, Love Marc Davis’ Alice design. It’s iconic and very cute. I also tend to love girls that look similar to that [blonde hair with bangs, alice headband, blue eyes, fair skin, pretty]. I even have my own character look in similar fashion. I also like Alice’s personality. I like how she’s proper, logical and well mannered in a world full of wackiness. It’s amazing how she can keep her sanity in there. I like how you can relate with Alice and experience the Wonderland along with her.
Another thing I found nice is that all the wonderland characters are such assholes and douches. They all basically pick on Alice, thus making them as dicks. I like that. I like Ed Wynn’s voice for Mad Hatter. It’s just so...fitting and hilarious. He played it very well. There not much else say why i like this film.
5. The Lion King- I know most people here consider it overrated or find it bland. And I can agree that it’s not THE best or what ever praise it gets. But I love this movie a lot. You see, one of my favorite animals is Lions. I love Lions. period. Always did and always will. So back in 94’ when they reveal Disney going to make a Lion King movie, you can’t even imagine how exciting and hyper I was for this film. I felt like this film was MADE personally for me. Not to mention that it came out in June- same month as my birthday. So while it’s not the best movie in quality wise(still damn good) it is for me in enjoyment wise.
So for the story. The story seems to take on an influence from Shakespeare's Hamlet. Now I know others will argue that it also rip-off Kimba the White Lion. Personally I’d imagine they got some influential ideas from it but took it in it’s own direction as well. Not to mention Kimba was a TV series, where as TLK is a high budget movie. That’s all i’m going to leave at with that. Now I like the symbolic concept of circle of life and how everything has a part in nature’s system. It also give some slight implication of reincarnation as well. I love the use of African music. That made the movie works so well and authentic to the setting it takes place in. The opening song implicate that well enough.
As for the characters, I like the two main lions: Adult Simba and Mufasa. Both give great strength even to me. I like them pretty much. The others are ok. I use to find Pumbaa and Timon funny but more and more I tend find them more attention whoring. I mean they get their own tv series, animated movies after the TLK tried to create pumbaa and Timon knock-off, they seem take more focus than Simba himself. I got kinda annoyed with that. All in all, while not the best movie, it hold great place to me.
6. Meet the Robinsons- This is an emotional movie I found so moving. When I first heard this coming out. I never bother to take any serious consideration into looking forward to it and brush it off as shrek knockoff in humor attempt. Also the style wasn’t my taste at the time. Boy was I wrong and regret not seeing this at theaters when it came out. This movie is fantastic, and I wonder why not many people like this or give enough credits for it. I only recall Escapy giving merits to it. This movie demands you to pay close attention as it whizzes back and forth in the space-time continuum, touching on serious ideas and proposing some rather disturbing alternate realities. And the witty story twists are handled with rare subtlety and intelligence. The finale has very weepy and emotional feeling that was inspirational.
This movie’s main strong point is the characters. Lewis’ determination to find his mother is sad and emotional. You can’t help felt sorry for the life Lewis was brought for. Yet he still had hope to reunite with his mother. Too bad he never came across Facebook. The other character I like is Wilbur Robinson. Something about his design and personality is cool and I like it. I like the other members of the family in the future. They all add something about them that make you enjoy them.
7. Cinderella- This movie is most often consider most iconic when people thing of Disney(beside the mouse himself). I have to say, despite all that magic stuff often associated with her and use in Disney marketing, Cinderella really is more realistic than most people see. Only magic part is the Godmother and that only happen for one scene as a plot mechanism for Cindy to enter the ball. Oh and the mice....-___-. Other than that, everything else tend focus in more realistic relationship between Cindy and her stepmother and stepsisters. (following 3 paragraph i copy paste from Cindy discussion thread)
Of all the Disney heroine that became or are princesses, I have to say I find Cinderella probably the most mature and level headed of the bunch. Yes she did dream, but she, unlike Snow White and Aurora, didn't dream it and hope it'll come and appear for her. Actually when the prince announce the ball, I think Cinderella took that perfect window opportunity as a chance to escape her servitude life. Duster point out one time that she also tend the ball as a party fun, not for romantic love. I think that's another reason too.
Cindy seems to be a smart woman in very subtle ways, where as Belle, yes smart, seems to have to have a book or some icon symbol that represent intelligence to tell audience that. I like to say Cindy is very street smart. So also has very mature attitude about things when dealing with the shit she puts up with from her step mother and sisters. Even though she gotten ridiculed by them, she didn't feel hopeless, or depress, or any other weak negativity. She was actually strong in mental mindset. I also like her sarcastic subtle humor when she wants to be, like when she mention the step sister's "singing"
Cindy is by no way naive or shown any immaturity. Only one close to matching her is Belle and Kida (though i maybe missing something out on her. I have to re watch it).
After watching Cinderella, I came to actually top her up to one of my favorite Disney character. Way to go Cindy.
The stepmother is another character I love. She such a manipulative and calculating bitch. The conversation between her in the bed and Cindy really convey that well. It also give the domination aura around her over Cindy. While Cindy obtain her own aura of resistant in control. All this through body language and position. I think that one of my favorite scene in the movie. That one scene told us so much between the two and it’s relationship between the two.
The third character I like is the King. I just found him funny and was more than enough for the comedy as oppose to the mice which I consider the “obligatory mascot”. The King’s personality was interesting ins sort of weird way I can’t not describe. I dunno.
The stepsisters seems more of an annoyance that make me want to pimpslap them. And the mice plus lucifer comedy gimmick really doesn’t interest me too much. As for the Prince, he was cardboard plot device, that I wish he wasn’t. I mean basically the King and duke fill in majority of role the Prince should of taken. Not the comedy aspect but story plot aspect. It’s one of reason I was bit happy in the 3rd sequel where he does have a personality and was witty too.
All in all, Cinderella is great movie that enjoy mainly for Cindy’s and Stepmother’s interaction.
8. The Little Mermaid- Ariel is one of those characters, that is a princess but I never really consider her one. And that’s all thanks to her character and personality. The Little Mermaid is enjoyable movie that I love the score and music to. The story is simple yet engaging. The story does drift away from original source but hey, that’s disney. the movie as a whole I like for it’s steady and consistent pacing yet told so much.
As I say before I love the music and score. Alen Menkin and Howard Ashmen really made this one worth while. the three songs I like are Fathom Below, Part of your world, and Kiss the Girl. With Fathom Below, I thought it was a fitting opening to give off the setting and personality of the sea. With Part of Your World, Jodi Benson gave Ariel a fantastic singing voice and the song’s lyrics are catchy and moving as it talks about wanting to explore more and be a part of it. The whole song alone express Ariel’s personality and who she is. I also enjoy listening to this song instrumentally. It give such a nostalgic and relaxing feeling inside. The last song, Kiss the Girl, is catchy and funny.
As for characters, I like Ariel the best. She a vibrant, active girl....a teenager....well I dunno if being a teenager is prideful thing...but anyway yeah she full of life and determination. Her headstrong personality and resistant of her father’s orders, give her an expression of freedom. I also like her facial expressions. they really work especially when she lost her voice. You could almost read it so well, like when she notice brushing her hair with fork was weird, she stop and gets embarrass. It was cute and expressive. Or when she shakes her head as if she telling Sebastien don’t go tell her father.
The rest of the cast was great but I have nothing much to add for them. But I will say that I think TLM is one of the Disney movies that pulled off the comedic sidekicks well without it being forced and overblown.(Genie, T&P, etc). The humor wasn’t in your face like Genie is. Not that I hate the Genie.
One other weird thing is that when ever I think of TLM, I think of Sea World and 80’s/early 90’s Miami......ok...
9. The Black Cauldron- This is an underrated classic that had some much more potential. Had this been a success and not the box office failure the company makes it to be, I’d love to see if Disney would adapt the rest of the novels its based on.
For the story itself,, there could of been more to it. I haven’t read the novels so I can make exact comparison and what should or shouldn’t been done, but I notice for a fantasy epic, Taren hardly have any engaging fight battles. He doesn’t give off hero vibe like say...Aladdin. Maybe he’s too young, I dunno. I felt that part was bit lacking. The movie as whole wasn’t full fantasy epic like...Lord of the Rings. I’m not saying it should be like LotR, but it should of given it similar cosmology world like LotR. both are influence from Celtic lore So i was hoping it would give more of that. I’m also not too fond of Gurgi or Fflewddur Fflam too much, and Hen Wen’s squeal make me want to kill it. I do like Princess Eilonwry. I found her cute and spunky in her own way.
As for the villain, Horn king fit s the role of a haunting villain perfectly. While Goliath said that Horn king is too one dimensional, I find giving Horn King any additional personality would ruin his establish serious and no non-sense personality. Giving him just the chilling and ghastly appearance and expression was more than enough to convey that this dude means serious shit and won’t take any bullshit. I love his castle bit more than even malificant as his castle is gross, grisly, bloody, etc. and his henchmen give more off as brood and smelly henchmen that would brutalize you. Kinda like the Huns in Mulan.
The picture of this movie is fantastic. I already said enough with the castle alone, but many other scenes also does so like when the wrynn comes to steal Hen Wen, I love the zooming scope it did. While had some flaws, I did love it that much and it did have serious potential to be a top class Disney animated feature as well as making additional canon sequel to adapt from the novel series.
10. Atlantis- (i’ll edit this later. too tired now)
1. Pinocchio- Pinocchio has been and still is my favorite all time Disney movie since I was a little kid. I remember always singing "Hi-diddle-dee" and finding it a great song to sing. @ Super Aurora:
Your long post was well worth reading; it was a treat. I find it so funny that you would be in the middle of a serious review of a movie and then drop words like 'bitch', 'attention-whoring', 'asshole' or 'pimpslap'!
About Cauldron: I think the point of the movie was that Taran wasn't a hero. That's why he doesn't have the hero 'attitude' of Aladdin. He thinks he is a hero, but gets proven wrong on more than one occasion. He gets himself and his friends out of nasty situations mostly with a lot of luck and help from his magical sword. Had it not been a magic sword, he would have been killed halfway through the film!
Love that new avatar, by the way! Cool!

Ah I see. Though as I said in the tl;dr text I'm not sure how it happen to be address in the books. So I'd imagine it would intend to pull the LotR vibe. in some way. Disney going their own way isn't surprising either too though.Goliath wrote:About Cauldron: I think the point of the movie was that Taran wasn't a hero.
