What's the most you would pay for an OOP Disney title?
I'm kind of late into the Disney game, and am playing catch-up with a few volumes of Walt Disney Treasures. Unlike the previous Platinum/classic animated titles, which will undoubtedly get a good BD release with a little patience, I unfortunately don't see the Treasures series getting BD editions any time soon.
After browsing some outrageous prices on-line, I bought a used copy of Davy Crocket: The Complete Series for 39.99 at a local Movie Trading Co. The discs are in very good condition as is the case and inserts. The tin itself is a little dented and scuffed, but not really much more than a few new Treasures I've seen in stores.
Did I get a decent price?
What is the most you would pay, or have paid for an OOP/Vaulted Disney title?

Personally, I wouldn't pay more than MSRP for any OOP title, especially Disney titles. As we've seen, the animated classics will come back every 7 years.
The Disney Treasures titles may be a different story, they won't ever be released again (although the content may or may not be...)
Even the most expensive OOP DVD ever (Salo, the Criterion Collection,) was re-released.
It's a good idea to get something before it gets vaulted, if you think it's going to be something you might want later.

Well, it was better than the $49.99 I paid at Suncoast when I found it there used.Dr.Mirakle32 wrote:After browsing some outrageous prices on-line, I bought a used copy of Davy Crocket: The Complete Series for 39.99 at a local Movie Trading Co. Anyway, aside from Davy Crockett, I've never really bought any OOP Disney DVDs for a sh!tload of money, mainly because the ones I was interested in buying I always found at great prices thanks largely to GameStop (when they actually stocked movies), fye & suncoast, local mom&pop stores, and just random luck. I remember in 2006 I casually told my cousin (who works at GameStop) that if his store ever got The Fantasia Anthology for used DVDs, to pick it up for me and I'd pay him back. Then, like, a week later, he calls me out of the blue and asks "You wanted the Fantasia boxset right?" and I said "Yeah" and he goes "I'm holding it in my hand right now." So a week later, we meet at my house for the Thanksgiving party and I give him $27 and he gives me The Fantasia Anthology.

In the fall of 2005, I got following OOP titles via GameStop, all in near-mint condition:
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Platinum Edition - $16.99
Pinocchio: Gold Collection - $14.99
Peter Pan: Special Edition - $9.99
Sleeping Beauty: Special Edition - $12.99
Beauty and the Beast: Platinum Edition - $12.99
The Lion King: Platinum Edition - $12.99
Tarzan: Collector's Edition - $12.99
That was a good year. Unfortunately GameStop doesn't sell DVDs anymore (that's what MovieStop is for now!), but I'm glad I found all those when I did.
Since then, I pretty much buy the DVDs as they come out if I'm interested, so there's really no OOP titles I'm actively looking out for anymore (aside from Treasures, but they're not high on my DVD priority list)
In an semi-related not (the most ever paid for an OOP DVD) I paid $65 on e-bay for the two-disc Supergirl: Limited Edition. Worth every penny and then some.

The most I've paid for an out of production DVD title was $65 for 'Toy Story:The Ultimate Toy Box' from an eBay auction about 5 years ago. This was before the two movies were re-released, so I don't feel like I overpaid for it. At about the same time, I picked up 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' - Platinum Edition used from a local shop for $4.00. All of the discs from both sets are in great condition and came with all of the inserts. I've always been very satisfied with each of these purchases.

I almost feel like I've asked you this before, but I don't know...how do you remember what you bought when and for how much?!? Do you have the receipts right in front of you?Escapay wrote: In the fall of 2005, I got following OOP titles via GameStop, all in near-mint condition:

The Lion King: Platinum Edition - $12.99
Tarzan: Collector's Edition - $12.99

Well Gamestop puts their prices on their covers, so I'm guessing that albert must of still kept them on... or maybe he does keep his receipts.
Although I'm still wondering why he got Snow White and Lion King, considering his history with those two.
I've only been collecting Disney DVDs as of late, and I've been holding off on buying any OOP Platinum titles since I know we're eventually going to get them on Blu-Ray, and hopefully Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio's examples will indicate that we'll get some more substantial releases, but I'm considering breaking that rule for Aladdin's PE, which I found for $25 at my local flea market. Since it seems like Disney dropped it from the series this time around, anyway, I don't think it's really going to be "cheating" so come Sunday that'll be the most I've spent on an OOP DVD.
Other than that, I got Sword in the Stone's Gold Collection for $12 at my local FYE on Boxing Day, and even that I technically got for free when I also bought the first 2 volumes of Superman: The Animated Series for $15 a pop on the store's buy 2, get 1 free deal on used releases, and even then I didn't technically spend a cent on, since I used it all on store credit.
That was a good day.

I suppose it depends on the movie/edition.
I paid $100 to get a Japanese laserdisc of Song of the South... and I actually consider that a really good price since most sellers are greedy and ask for $300+.
I paid $35 for a "like new" Snow White, but I suppose that would be toward the high end. I'd maybe pay $20-30 for the Platinum Edition sets, but I'm not about to spend in the triple digits to get that stuff.
Now, if I could find a sealed or "like new" Lion King and Beauty and the Beast from a seller who isn't trying to make a 300% profit...

I paid $50 for the Special Edition Sleeping Beauty back in 2006. I don't regret it, even though it's been re-released since then.
I never got the Platinum Snow White. It's the only one I'm missing, and I'm waiting this time.
I'm missing almost all of the Treasures. I didn't start seriously collecting until I had missed out on too many to catch up on. I doubt I'll try to buy too many of them. I will hope they get re-released somehow sometime.

Re: What's the most you would pay for an OOP Disney title?
I am in the same boat as you being late to the game collecting Walt Disney Treasures DVD's. When the Treasures collections started I saw them and wasn't interested in them at first. I only got a couple in the beginning. Then as time went on I wanted more and more of them. I actually went from having 5 or 6 volumes to a total 20 in the last year and I am still needing one more. I am not a completist type of collector and am not interested in 7 of the 28 that are out.Dr.Mirakle32 wrote:I'm kind of late into the Disney game, and am playing catch-up with a few volumes of Walt Disney Treasures. Now on to your question. Did you get a good price? I don't know, but think of it this way - Did you get what you wanted? Are you enjoying what you got? Did it fill in a missing spot in your collection? If you ask me it is all how the end product satisfies you. I don't think that is a bad price but I haven't been doing research into that particular Treasures volume. You could have done worse.
For me my prices have been all over the place for the volumes I have purchased. I have gotten some at the SRP(suggested retail price) and others at collector's prices. My most expensive volume I got just before Christmas was Mickey Mouse in Living Color Volume One for $60 still factory sealed on Ebay. My cheapest was Mickey Mouse in Living Color Volume 2 for only $9.99 factory sealed on Ebay. Two days ago I won an "opened and watched only once" Silly Symphonies Volume One for $43. This one I feel I have gotten for a great price considering this volume was part of wave 1. I have seen them go much higher than that as I almost got one for $55 a few days before but lost the auction. All in all if you are looking at getting past waves of the Treasures or any other Disney DVD's, search around alot as there are alot of people out there that way over charge (this goes for any item whether it be Disney or Star Wars or whatever).
As Walt Disney Treasures are likely not going to get re-released (you never know, it could happen) I don't mind having to pay some of the prices to get the volumes I need. I do have a problem at paying more than the SRP of an item that has just hit the store shelves and have gotten all snatched up by the people that do nothing but put them on Ebay at inflated prices.

One las thing I would like to say. Look every where for the DVD you are looking for. I found one at a local used CD/DVD store at a mall and got an earlier wave Treasures volume for only $19.99 in mint condition.
To make a LONG story short (too late!

I think the most I ever paid for any Disney DVD was for the Ultimate Toy Box, but that doesn't really count since it was new and I picked it up on sale at Wal-mart.
Any used Disney DVD's I've bought were at a considerably lower price, but that was mostly for DVD's that were still available new but I didn't want to pay full price for, like the early editions of The Little Mermaid and Mulan.
Aside from the Treasures, I've mostly kept ahead of anything I *really* want before it's out of print, or I can allow myself to wait until it comes back again.

Since I still don't own any, I can't say I would pay more than $20 for each 2-disc. I guess if I had a Blu-Ray Player, I might buy the new animated Blu-Ray discs. ONLY of the important animated classic movies. I refuse to buy stuff like Ratatouille and Cars and stuff like that until I'm much older.
But, you know, if Pinocchio is coming in Blu-Ray, I'll legitimately think about picking it up as well as Sleeping Beauty...if I get a Blu-Ray player. Which is still somewhat doubtful.

I have yet to buy an OOP Platinum Edition...mostly cause the only Platinum Edition, in print or not, that I DON'T own is TLK. And on one hand, I really want it so I can complete my Platinum collection, but I'm hoping when it comes back, they'll have done what they should have done last time - include trailers, an actual making-of documentary, and not have a totally confusing menu system.
