Writing as a career?

Post by pap64 »

A friend of mine asked me during the weekend what were my fields of expertise so he could get a better idea of my unemployment situation. I included writing as something I would like to do (publish stories and essays etc.). I then got to thinking about this as a career.

I KNOW that you can't be rich being a writer so I would never depend on my stories unless they become the next Harry Potter and spawn generous amounts of licensing and merchandising deals. But I would like to get some change out of my love for writing.

So, can anyone instruct on how to see this as a career opportunity?

I don't know a whole lot about writing specifically, but when it comes to doing anything creative I'd say your best bet would be to look into some online communities centered around the subject.

Conversing with people that share your passion always helps. It would be a great way to gain experience as a writer, give your work exposure, receive insightful critiques, and find information on how to get published and paid for your work. There's bound to be others who have more experience on the subject; I'm sure they'll not only be able to offer you great advice, but perhaps they could hook you up with some connections as well. :D

I've done something very similar with my art through online communities, and eventually reached a position where I have regular paid jobs because of the experience I gained and the people I've met online. I'm not exactly getting rich off of it but it's been gratifying to actually feel productive with what I love to do. :)

Interesting. I never knew that online communities could help your career.

In all honesty, I would LOVE to share my ideas and seek people's opinion, but I am extremely paranoid about it. I would love to register my original idea so that in the event of plagiarism I still own the idea.

Anyone know any good writing communities?
