Where's the Chat gone?

Post by Wonderlicious »

Is it me, or has the Chat Room just suddenly disappeared? If it's not just me, then where has it gone? :?

To quote myself in this thread:
The chat concept is currently being reworked. What I've seen there in the way of recent activity is depressing. You have banned members checking in under aliases, and a bunch of non-English and non-sensical ramblings (often with profanity). None of this applies to anyone who has posted in this thread or who would post in this thread. And therein lies a major problem. There is just about zero presence from regular forum members.

I'm trying to decide if it would be best to keep the chat room limited to either certain scheduled occasions or perhaps just keep the address private and known only to regular forum members. Either way would cut down bandwidth usage (which despite expanding to a semi-dedicated plan, is still at its limit again) and keep the value and intention of the chat room from being undermined.

I'll keep you guys informed.
But seeing a few of UD's regular forum members inquiring about where it's gone gives me some hope for the "keep the URL quiet, see if things shape up" approach. To that end, I give you this: http://www.ultimatedisney.com/hiddenchat/

Kind of hard to keep it hidden if it's seen plain as day...

Do we not have chat anymore?

Post by Disney Lover »

I was looking for the chat link at the top of the board but I don't see it. Do we not have a chat room anymore?

When I'm in chat, it seems to me that only a couple of people can hold a conversation and someone ends up being the third wheel, it always seemed like the third person chatting would sort of be somewhat phased out of the conversation. I wouldn't let that be me, so it was the other person who would be strong in talking and then someone else would talk more and that 2nd person would become the third person. Never too many people chatting when I've had the pleasure of talking to someone. But it's so great when people are actually there. It just seems to me that if there was something like a set time, if we got used to the habit of chatting, it would be easier, no pressure.

I love chat though. I just kept forgetting it was around. If I hadn't have forgotten on numerous occasions, I would have gone there a lot more often. I always enjoyed myself there.

Luke, a bunch of us have been using the chat room that ktrek made at everywherechat.com on a regular basis lately, but non-UD members can and do come in and usually disrupt our discussions. Is there any way that you would consider reopening the UD chat room? Maybe you could do what you said and allow only regular forum members to access it?

Yes, some random people come in, posting insulting things, talking about irrelevant topics, which sometimes are inappropriate, and are generally immature. Also, the chat acts up quite frequently, making it unable to log on, or even access the main website.

Yeah, using the third party server brings in some...interesting people to say the least.

I think that since we have a group of people who come into chat daily...maybe it would be a good idea to bring back the old site-based chat, even in the "hidden" formation.

And if Luke decides to do so but we need a chat mod, I'll certainly offer myself to the task.

I was also in the chat with Amy, Dan and Dave when this happened. Some sketchball came in asking who was Japanese and who liked Happy Tree Friends. They also thought it was necessary to point out that they liked it because it involved the deaths of "cute little animals who go through unfortunate experiences in their lives". The 4 of us then showed that we were uncomfortable and the person started to deny everything they had said, even though it was sitting there 2 lines above. We all left and created our chat room on AIM. Just thought I'd share this so you can see how desperately we need our chat back that way we won't have to deal with people like this.

And as Dan mentioned, the website just doesn't always work well. Sometimes you can't even log into the room...or you can log in, but the room is just black.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with Happy Tree Friends, okay?! lol

Anywho, I've never really had a problem with our current chat room situation. I mean, the occasional spammer comes in from time to time, sure, but they're usually only there for about 5 minutes, then leave on their own. Besides, I think it keeps things interesting, you never know who's gonna drop in!
