Disney Blu Ray 2009 Disucssion.

Well since getting my Playstation 3 in 2006 I've had such wonderful expiernece using my HDTV and surround system to really get the most enjoyment out of my Disney Blu Rays in term of sound and prestine picture.

For those just making the transition now into Blu Ray may I suggest Sleeping Beauty, and the Pirate 3 film. I was floored with just how gret those two movies are in High Def.

*Also this thread isn't a flame war to start if you haven't/don't want to indluge in Blu Ray.

I don't have Blu-Ray yet, but I'm still excited for certain titles that come out as I know it'll be well worth it when I do dip my toes (and wallet) into the Blu-Ray Pool of Life.

I edited the list to the ones I'm interested in. Given how it was filmed and mastered, Sin City in Blu-Ray will likely look phenomenal.

I'm also hoping (likely in vain) for Disney to get around to some of their older catalog films and give it a treatment on Blu-Ray that it never got on DVD. Stuff like an anamorphic and restored transfer of The Rocketeer with extras like commentaries and documentaries.

Also does anyone else like the fact that you get DVD copies with Blu Rays too??

It'll seem rather redundant like...5 years from now. But given the compact nature of both Blu-Ray and DVD, makes more sense than if Disney issued VHS/DVD combo packs in 1999/2000.

Um, anyway... The only one that I might possibly buy is Pinocchio. My PS3 will come sometime next week, the thing is... I was watching some DVDs upscaled they look *amazing*. People who complain that DVD doesn't look good aren't doing it right.

So my policy of "Buy the DVD, rent the Blu-Ray" still stands.

Ironically, I did an 8x zoom of The Matrix HD-DVD (It's some lame "special feature"), and it was REALLY REALLY fuzzy. I then put in National Treasure 2 DVD, did up to 10x zoom using the Xbox 360... it was actually less blurry.

Snow White and Pinnochio are must haves. I also hope we get Hunchback and Hercules on BD in '09. I really want Aladdin, but I doubt it will be out that soon.

It's not gonna happen in 2009... they've already announced all the Blu-Rays they're releasing this year.

But seriously, Aladdin is just insanely awesome as it is. I'm not starting a flame war, I'm just pointing out that your DVDs can look pretty good as they are...

I'm pretty sure that that list isn't everything, especially for the end of the year releases. You can expect at least 50-100 more titles combined from Disney's film branches.

I'm with ya on that, Wire! I'm also giddy for a 3-Disc 30th Anniversary Edition of The Black Hole. And Disney, if you're reading this...the 30th Anniversary is THIS YEAR! GET THE HINT?!?!

so you would rather have a worse movie on blu ray than a better one? Im not seeing the logic. higer res, less compresison and broader range of colors never a bad thing.

hmmm I don't think I expressed myself properly. I meant to say that some of the films wouldn't benefit a whole lot with blu-ray, simply due to the nature of the artwork. Of course they will benefit, but if it will be worth the upgrade, I don't know. I'm talking from the perspective of a someone who can't afford to buy a full HD-tv/blu-ray player/BD discs very easily (unfortunately they are still very overpriced here).

I agree. Think about it, if they released Charlie Chaplin on Blu-Ray. (I'm a big Charlie Chaplin fan) how much better would it actually look? Also some things like early silent films aren't meant to look extravagantly good. Wouldn't it looking too good take away from the experience? Early silent films and HD don't seem to mix.

I don't agree. Regular 35mm film still has more resolution than HD does, so even the Chaplin films (if they were preserved correctly) would look better than the versions now available if a new transfer was made. Look at Casablanca, it's amazing. The same goes for Pinocchio, it looks amazing too.
I saw The Pixar Story on the Wall-E Blu-Ray, and even Toy Story and A Bug's Life looked astonishing. I was used to the old SE's, and the difference is huge.
So, not every film will look like Transformers, but there's definitely room for more improvement.

Finding Nemo was a major hit, so they're going to hold the release until more people have a Blu-Ray player (so Disney can make more money).
