I do see a purpose of releasing this though, the Broadway show probably only has another year in it. I would expect this to either be a farewell to the broadway show (since pretty much the only new material is based on it), or it might boost it's popularity and make it last a bit longer.

In the end I'll probably pick this up because I'll want the Broadway featurettes.
Mary Poppins was my favorite before TLM, and I do agree with you- the cover is so much better than the 40th Anniversary edition, though I'm definitely not willing to double-dip just for a couple of spammy features.

Oh, and amen about the 2-Disc Enchanted!

I didn't see the press release for the new 45th anniversary edition of Mary Poppins posted anywhere on this site so I thought I'd post it:

BVHE Press Release: Mary Poppins 45th Anniversary Edition

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Walt Disney

MARY POPPINS 45TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
A Timeless Disney Classic that Spans Generations

Burbank, California, October 31, 2008—Practically perfect in every way, the world’s most famous nanny touches down on rooftops everywhere when Mary Poppins: The 45th Anniversary Edition arrives on new 2-disc Special Edition DVD January 27, 2009 from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.

Dazzling animation, groundbreaking special effects and award-winning music earned Mary Poppins five Academy Awards®, including Best Actress and Best Song. The new two-disc DVD features hours of captivating bonus material, including the all-new “Mary Poppins: From Page to Stage”, a fascinating feature that takes audiences backstage for an exclusive look at the making of the Tony Award winning musical, and “Step in Time,” a never-before-filmed musical number performed by the original Broadway cast—also downloadable as an MP3 audio file. Bonus materials also include the ultimate "behind-the-scenes" movie documentary and reminiscences of the film’s stars and legendary composer Richard Sherman.

With its revolutionary blend of live action and pioneering Disney animation, Mary Poppins became an instant hit and was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar®. The film stars the incomparable Dame Julie Andrews, who won the 1965 Best Actress Academy Award for her film debut, and Dick Van Dyke as Bert, the dancing chimney sweep.

Songwriting brothers Richard and Robert Sherman (Bed Knobs and Broomsticks, The Jungle Book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) received Oscars for Best Song ("Chim Chim Cher-ee"), and Best Score, which includes such unforgettable numbers as "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," “Sister Suffragette," "The Life I Lead," "The Perfect Nanny," "A Spoonful of Sugar," "Jolly Holiday," "Stay Awake," "I Love To Laugh," "Feed the Birds," "The Fidelity Fiduciary Bank," “Step in Time" and "Let's Go Fly a Kite."

Based on the popular children's stories by P.L. Travers, Mary Poppins has won the hearts of generations of kids and their parents with its enchanting tale of a magical nanny who changes the lives of two rowdy but neglected kids with determination, discipline and “Just a Spoonful of Sugar.” Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) takes Jane and Michael Banks (Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber) on magical, musical outings including a play date with adorable animated penguins, a race through the country side on merry-go-round horses and a trip across the rooftops of London on a stairway made of smoke—and always gets them home in time for dinner! With her foolproof mixture of good manners and unpredictable fun, Mary not only introduces order to the chaotic Banks household, but brings the whole family together in the process.

MrIncredible wrote:Simple question: Why do a rerelease of this when there's already a fairly good special edition and there are other catalog titles needing new transfers/ special editions? The only point this would have is if they simply changed the artwork, which they should have done with A Bug's Life and Roger Rabbit this year. Or could there also be a Blu-ray release?

But on to the fact about other Disney titles needing special editions, where's my Hercules or Fantasia Special Editions?
No, Mary Poppins will not get a Blu-ray release this time around. Maybe it will later.

I agree with you about Roger Rabbit. I so hope they re-release it with more features, better cover art, and on Blu-ray!

Platinum editions of Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 will be released on DVD and Blu-ray in March of 2010.

Since the UD review wasn't posted yet, I checked out the DVDTalk Review of Mary Poppins: 45th Anniversary Edition in the hopes that the press release was wrong (it doesn't mention the "Deconstruction of a Scene" featurettes). And it turns out the 45th Anniversary Edition doesn't include them, nor does it include "The Party" featurette, which was 16mm footage set to audio from the premiere party. The new stuff sounds pretty good though, but it's upsetting that it came at the expense of 3 featurettes which altogether was about 25 minutes, surely there was enough room on the second disc for it.

The vintage "Hollywood Goes to a Premiere" featurette is absent yet again despite being on the Exclusive Archive Collection laserdisc, the Limited Edition laserdisc, and the Gold Collection DVD (which also included the "Practically Perfect in Every Way" featurette that was on the Limited Edition laserdisc. It's not in the 40AE or 45AE). Much of "Hollywood Goes to a Premiere" was already seen in the "Gala World Premiere" footage, but it still had some footage unique to it. Also missing is the storyboard-to-film comparison of "Jolly Holiday" which was on the laserdiscs but never on the DVDs (the Deconstruction featurette for "Jolly Holiday" doesn't feature storyboards, IIRC).

The "I Love To Laugh" game is gone too, but I'm sure most won't miss it (entertaining as it was).

A/V wise, there's no mention of the 2.0 Stereo version of the DEHTM, which is a good thing as the DEHTM version sucks, so stick with the original stereo mix. Also, it's still 1.66:1, and likely the same transfer as the 40AE. One good thing about this re-release is that it subtitles the extras, something not featured in the 40AE and thankfully is becoming commonplace on most DVDs now (subtitling the extras).

Hopefully when the big mega-restoration that's been hinted at comes out on Blu-Ray it'll be in 1.75:1 like it should be.

Now I think you can appreciate why I don't buy any of their DVDs (other than the Dimension-Miramax or Touchstone-Hollywood ones, and only then is when I'm desperate!).

I will not be abused by a shitty, evil, greedy, manipulative corporation just because they own some amazing, ground-breaking films. I have had it with them. Time and again, they take advantage of you people.

I'm sticking with my Disney VHS collection until they break. And then, I'm buying more VHS's. Used on Amazon.com. Until I'm dead. Those bastards aren't getting my hard-earned money.

Disney makes you an offer, it is up to you to accept it. They make offers every day, most people inclined to do so accept the offer. You have chosen not to accept Disney's offers on DVD. That doesn't make them "evil" -- in this instance, Disney is re-releasing Mary Poppins without much fuss, I'm sticking with my previous DVDs as there is nothing here to upgrade for (I suspect the original Buena Vista title card hasn't been included, either).

Some of you guys behave like teenagers who think their parents are the spawn of Satan himself because you can't have everything you want. I was born in an era when VCRs didn't exist, cable TV was a novelty when I was 8. Laserdisc in my 20's, DVD in my late 20's. We now live in a world where every single animated feature ever made by Disney has been released on digital video...if it was up to me, I would have never released certain titles on home video at all. You're lucky to have them. But its not good enough for you.

Times have changed and so have the standards. It's no longer about putting a film in theatres every seven years, we know what Disney is capable of in the presentation of their movies on DVD and Blu-ray and we are naturally dissatisfied with the lukewarm, lousy disrespectful re-packaging of their major titles while neglecting many of thier lesser known stuff. We know Disney can do better and so can they, but they don't and we do, so we complain.

As I stated earlier, I do not have the 40th Anniversary Edition of this title, so I picked up the new one today. I am excited to watch it, it has been a really long time since I have seen it.

Also, lucky for me, my local Best Buy accidentally put out about 6 copies of "Oliver and Company: 20th Anniversary Edition" so I picked that up as well. I figured there was no incentive to wait until next Tuesday, they probably won't offer a sale price or a in store freebie. I was so excited to see it on the shelf, I had to buy it.

I picked up the 45th Anniversary Edition this morning and while I don't have time to sit through the new stuff, here is my reaction so far:

I really like the packaging, but dislike the lack of inserts (a DMR code and a booklet advertising new releases with no new information) and the lack of disc art. They are just gray. I also find it odd that in order to advertise the new Broadway bonus features, they make no mention of the in depth making of on the back of the box. Instead, they focus on the bonus short and Poppins Pop-Up Fun Facts.

The menu's are wonderful! I'm really impressed with them.

Trailers on disc 1 are for Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Bolt, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, Monster's Inc. (Blu-Ray), Oliver and Company, Disney Parks, Pinocchio, UP, Space Buddies, The Secret of the Magic Gourd, and Disney Movie Rewards. No Black Cauldron trailer as previously expected.

The transfer appears identical to the 40th Anniversary Edition, complete with framing problems and all.

Hmm.

So which is a better set to get (since I don't own it on DVD at all), the 40th Anniversary set or the new one?

If it still has the wrong n00b-cropped aspect ratio I see no benefit to it... I know they added a couple special features but did they REMOVE any?

I'm only wondering because I got an email from DMR saying I can get 75 bonus points before 2/10... and I was curious if it's worth buying or not. Otherwise I won't, and either wait for a newer correct AR release or try to get the old set somewhere (since it actually has disc art!)

What is this? I just bought Mary Poppin 45 SE and am sad to see this has the bland grey coloring of slate of stone.....

What's with that 2-disc disney editiions I.E Narnia Prince Caspian and now Mary Poppins...getting 2-disc gray ugly clay putty....I mean did Disney use all their colors for re-doing Pinocchio that they have no digital colors left to put on their 2-disc dvds?

Now if Oliver and Company is a bland gray disc I am going to lose my lunch and then add the remainders of my lunch to custom make my own disc art...I am going to need a lot of Diet Mountain Dew. Pizza and Cheeseburger's not to mention a BLT Ranch Club chicken sandwich with some strawberry cheese cake ice cream and some Mountain Dew Voltage which is blue in color in order to do this..... :P

I believe this is the new way of Disney.

Oliver & Co. has the gray/silver.
Mary Pop does
Caspian does
The BOLT preview disc does

...cost saving devices, I guess.

ALSO: If anyone has the Mary Poppins 45th Anniversary DVD DMR code and is willing to trade for it, please PM me!

and then one wonders why Mary Poppin Caspian and Olver & Co get gray/silver discs but The Secret of the Magic Gourd got a colorful disc art....and Caspian on Blu Ray got 2 discs that were not bland....they had images on them as well....

Just when you think you've figured out Disney's Marketing Choices...they go and release something you didn't expect when you were figuring out the reasons behind the madness may not be those at all :P

And to think that "full color artwork on disc" used to be touted as a bonus feature!
