Well, parts of Jurassic Park are fine... but it's rated PG-13 for a reason and it might scare little kids... not to mention they wouldn't understand the plot at all.
-_-

That's got to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard (as of 4:00pm today).

So what if it's a bit "scary"? It's good scary, exciting scary. It's not like it's "murderer running around town cutting off people's heads" scary.

And what makes you think a child wouldn't be able to understand the plot of this? It's not exactly the most complicated plot in the history film. And even if they don't, for whatever reason, understand the plot... who cares?! It's friggin dinosaurs, and kids love dinosaurs!

I must have been 5 or 6. I loved it, but I admit that it gave me a nightmare (the only nightmare that I've ever had/remembered): I replaced the blonde girl in the famous T-rex scene. But I regret nothing! I saw the sequel in theaters about a year or two after that.

I was 13 or 14. I know I didn't need a parent to see it. I remember sitting in the theater with a group of friends, enjoying every bit of it. It was amazing for its time (still looks very good). Most memorable part wasn't in the movie, it was in the theater.

The scene when the T-rex was trying to eat the kids in the truck. It was about the part right after the Rex smashed the roof on top of the kids....the sound was deafening, and yet in all it, you hear a woman get up behind us and scream, "THIS MOVIE ISN'T FOR CHILDREN!". She had a 4 year old and an 8 year old, give or take a year on either. And both were kicking and screaming to STAY. My friends and I yelled back at her, "THAT'S WHY ITS RATED PG-13 YOU F'IN MORON!" she huffed and stormed out. I yelled, "LET THE KIDS STAY!" lol I had to see the movie again the next weekend because we all totally lost it after that and most the theater missed that scene because they were either laughing or also yelling at her.

BTW, my daughter started watching Jurassic Park at age 2 I think. She is fine. She saw Jurassic Park 3 in the theater when she was like 3-4. We like to watch the movie first and then we watched the makings off, so she saw how they made the dinosaurs. She had no nightmares and she is just fine for it. I was raised watching movies like Child's Play and other horror movies. I am not violent or desensitized to real violence. Its a movie, its fake, its entertainment. So long as there is no nudity and sex or extreme violence/gore (ala Saw), I let my daughter watch all sorts of movies.

my friend said I had bad parents for letting me watch that at that age. I do not think Jurassic Park is a bad movie to watch at that age and I was never psychologically damaged by it (in fact JP and its sequel were two of my favorite movies as a kid, though I realize the second one sucks now).
Hah, I just realized I'm that friend.
But his parents also let him watch R-rated movies when he was like 7... I don't know that that's such a good idea.

OK, maybe there's no sex or anything, but do you know any 2-3 year olds that actually understand cloning of DNA and bringing stuff to life? I realize it's pretty mild in the grand scope of things... it could be rated PG these days. But I'd say maybe 6 or so... not 2 or 3! (My parents were the reverse, they're so overly-cautious they saw me watching Scrubs and heard just the mildest swear word, and started saying it was inappropriate and I shouldn't be watching it. And I'm 17! The show is 14+!)

But then again, it seems like the age for this stuff keeps getting younger. I'm not one of those people who blames Grand Theft Auto for making people murderers... but I also don't think stuff like that is appropriate for little kids. When my parents were teenagers, they probably didn't even have movies like Saw... they'd be banned by the MPAA. Next thing you know, when I have kids, they're gonna want to be watching Superbad at the age of 4

13.

And what the heck? 3 is definitely too young. I can't think of any 3-year-old that would be able to handle that movie. Okay, yeah. There's no human vs. human violence. It's still too violent for someone that young.

...This from someone who was watching R movies at 9.

Brendan wrote:I was always annoyed it never got a two-disc release. It's a pretty solid one disc set, especially for its time (it's one of the first DVDs I bought), but two discs would have given the movie more breathing room.
Before the Adventure Triple Pack that drf mentioned, there was a "Trilogy" boxset that had a boxset-exclusive bonus disc containing two hours of special features that covered all three films.

Beyond Jurassic Park:

Jurassic Park
- Original Featurette on the Making of the Film (4:51)
- Steven Spielberg Directs Jurassic Park (9:09)
- “Animatics: T-Rex Attack” Featurette (7:24)
- “Hurricane in Kauai” Featurette (2:11)
- “ILM and Jurassic Park: Before and After the Visual Effects” Featurette (6:34)
- Universal Mediterrána (0:48 )

The Lost World: Jurassic Park
- Original Featurette on the Making of the Film (13:20)
- Interviews with Writer Michael Crichton (15:29)
- “ILM and The Lost World: Before and After the Visual Effects” Featurette (20:46)
- “The Compie Dance Number: Thank You Steven Spielberg from ILM” Featurette (1:40)
- Universal Mediterrána (0:48 )

Jurassic Park III
- “The Special Effects of Jurassic Park III” Featurette (10:32)
- “The Industrial Light & Magic Press Real” Featurette (10:16)
- “The Sounds of Jurassic Park III” Featurette (13:37)
- “The Art of Jurassic Park III” Featurette (7:57)
- “Jurassic Park: The Ride” Featurette (2:37)
- Universal Mediterrána (0:48 )

I've always wanted to get that old boxset, but never could find it anywhere and now it's rather hard to find. It'd really be cool if Universal double-dipped yet again on the JP films by re-releasing them as two-disc DVDs (with the existing stuff, the "Beyond Jurassic Park" stuff, and any new stuff they wanna include), or better yet, putting them out on Blu-Ray. I have a feeling they're holding off on a re-release until Jurassic Park 4 ever gets made (which seems less likely ever since Michael Crichton passed away).

Woah, holy crap that's a lot of stuff! Time to hit eBay!

But other than that OOP set, the Adventure Pack I mentioned is the best one to get... right? I mean, for each movie having a single disc, they do have quite a substantial number of extras. Compared to some two-disc sets, even.

I actually have that box set, Scaps. When JPIII came out on DVD, there was a promotion that when you bought it and mailed the UPC code and like $5 or something, they mailed you the Beyond DVD and the red case, so that you would have the box set as seen in stores. I of course, being a big fan, did so.

The Beyond disc isn't the best thing... it has some nice odds and ends, but nothing that ever tickled my fancy too much, but maybe my fancy just isn't that ticklish. It's nice to have, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it. I'm not even sure if I have my Beyond disc at school with me, as it was not something I revisited often.

Other than that, the three disc set is still pretty solid. My desire for a two disc was in part just to get some new substantial special features and the movie on a stand-alone disc.

Ah. I probably should've checked your dvdaf link.

Still, at least drf knows about it now. :P

I agree. (and don't really have anything else to add, just wanted to do the quote name to complete the trilogy. :P )

ETA:

I realized I never said how old I was when I saw Jurassic Park. I have a gut feeling I was 9 (so 1994, ugh...), as I didn't see it until it came out onto VHS and our cousin got it for us to watch at our Thanksgiving party (movies and parties are like a tradition in our family).

My daughter was around 3 when she first saw JP and she is just fine. Granted, it depends on the child and the parents, but I don't think you should just give a blanket statement that no 3 year old can handle it. Granted a lot of the violence in the movie....T-rex attacking the raptors and galliminus, etc....you see the REAL stuff like that on Animal Planet...with real blood, real gore...there was very little gore and blood in JP. It was really subdued.

But I think the movie would go over most kids' heads. At least at that young of an age.

I mean, a lot of shows on Animal Planet are more kid-oriented... which is why I never watch that channel
But really, it's not an issue of whether or not they can handle it... I just don't see any good reason for letting a 3-year old watch Jurassic Park.

This could just be because my parents are the over-sensitive opposite extreme that don't like me watching ANYTHING dirty... to the point I just refuse to tell them what movies I rent/buy. That being said, the first PG-13 movie I saw was the Planet of the Apes remake, and I think I was 11 when that was in theaters.

Sure most the plot and technical talk went totally over her head....but the dinosaurs were cool. My daughter was NEVER into Barney or many of those other kid shows, she preferred more realistic looking animals and such.

I watched Repo! The Genetic Opera in the living room the other day. My parents were in the next room and kept checking in wondering what the heck I was watching. Since it was a lot of singing and heavy cursing.

I was five or six when I first watched it, on video. The T-Rex scene was kind of scary, but the thing I was actually scared about was the Raptors in the kitchen scene. And yet I wanted to watch the film over and over again. I still like it, though. The wonderful CGI still holds up.
The Lost World is underrated in my book. Yes, it's different from the first one, but that's supposed to be. An exact retread of the first would be boring. The T-Rex in San Diego may be stolen from King Kong, but it was immense fun. The movie was also one of the first DVD's I bought.
Jurassic Park III wasn't nearly as good as the first two. It was a decent popcorn flick, but there was something lacking. But the Spinosaurus was cool. It's also ironic that the CGI was better in the first JP, than in this sequel that came out eight years later.
But anyway, I'm happy to buy all of them (the first two sooner than the third) if they're released on Blu-Ray.

Would ya believe? I had never seen this movie until a year or two ago. And it wasn't because it would have traumatized me when it came out (I was 3), but because I was just not interested. When it came to VHS, I was a finnicky little kid. My parents tried to get me to watch it when it was released in November '93, but I was having none of that. Bored the crap outta me.* So when a little mom and pop theater was playing it in Orlando back in '07, I called up a couple friends and we went to see it. It was pretty cool. :)

Cheers,
JM :thumb:

P.S. I've got a similar story with Star Wars and E.T..... I wouldn't watch those at all on tape, but when they came back to the theater I was instantly in love with both of them. There's just something about the big screen experience that I just love.
Cheers,

LOL, so it turns out my friend Thailog actually has that Beyond Jurassic Park disc from a promo for JP3. I'm still gonna try to snipe it on eBay, though.

And speaking of Jurassic Park, has anyone seen my few-year-old music video?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qf2ytBHx31w

I know it skips a bit, and the quality is horrible... I was new at ripping DVDs at the time, and the program I use was just horrible at it. I plan on re-making it using higher quality rips, and possibly in widescreen now that YouTube is in widescreen. (Before I used the fullscreen DVD since that was the aspect ratio of YouTube and the majority of people's videos)

And yes, I know I have shots of broad daylight during "Jurassic Park is frightening in the dark"... I've heard that too many times now! At the time it was all I could find so I stuck it in there, and of course I'll fix it in the remake.
