The Lion King Laserdisc

Post by bambifan56 »

Why did the DVD exclude so many of the features from the laserdisc? I have been searching YouTube and found alot of features on the laserdisc that the DVD just abandoned. I was asking "Why?". I mean if it's already out there, why not just put it on the DVD then? Hopefully the Blu-Ray will improve on it. Does anyone know if there is a site with all of the Laserdisc extras? Thanks alot.

LOL, I've mentioned that laserdisc to other people before...

I do have a recorded copy of the CAV boxset laserdisc (well, someone I know does, and he gave me a copy of the DVD)... If I get a chance to ask him about uploading it, I will. I doubt the mods would be happy if I put a link here in the thread but I can PM people links if they want...

Because Disney is of the mindset that if it's old, it's not worth anything to Joe Sixpack and Jane Soccermom, the bulk of consumers who'll be buying the Platinums regardless of the special features.

Just wondering--what Disney movies have had laserdiscs? I tried to search Gogle to check for myself, but it'll take me hours to sort through all the unhelpful crap when I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

1. The DVD's early presentation reel may be within this chapter.
2. The DVD's multi-language reel may be within this chapter.

I also believe a lot of the "Music" featurette got carried over to the new one on the DVD (heck, it may even be the same one. I need to check). Either way, there's a lot missing, but this still doesn't hold a candle to what Alice's DVD left off. :P

If I'm not mistaken, the LD and PE DVD each had different early versions of CYFTLT. I think the DVD used an early version that involved Timon and Pumbaa, while the one on the LD used the version in which a small snippet was used in the trailer that appeared on the 1994 VHS of The Fox And The Hound. I could be wrong and just didn't find that one on the DVD (which I rented from Blockbuster, as I never got it when it was in stores), but I did find the one with Timon and Pumbaa on there.

Here's the trailer from the TF&tH VHS:

Wikipedia says this:
Later, the song was planned to be sung this time only by Simba and Nala but in the end the idea was scrapped again
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Can_You_Fe ... ve_Tonight )

Could that possibly be the version in that trailer?

The one in the trailer on the F&TH VHS is definitely the early version from the laserdisc.

And this is the one from the DVD.

I'm hoping the next DVD and the Blu-Ray will have both versions. It's really unacceptable that the one that a lot of people even feel is superior to the final version was left off. (Not to mention no real making-of documentary and no trailers.)

I have the LD and the DVD and I can confirm that both versions of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" were on the laserdisk. I can only imagine that they only picked the Timon and Puumba version for the DVD since little kids are likely to laugh at that.

In short: Most of the "classics" (up until the late 90s) were available on LD at one time or another, but quality, number of features and so on vary quite a lot.

As for The Lion King, I've always thought the extras on the DVD were quite a mess, so at least in that particular respect I tend to prefer the LD.
