Got a Circuit City gift card, USE IT FAST
They announced today that the remaining 567 stores will be liquidated. 34,000 more people going to be out of work. Wonder if this will be the last major store to close under the wonderful W economy. He does still have 4 days in office.

Our economy is not all Bush's fault. I don't think its going to instantly get better with Obama either. We have a long way to go. I HOPE it turns around in 2009. Too many people loosing their homes, jobs, etc... Its sad.
Anyway I'm actually sad to see Circuit City close. Its a lot easier to get in and out compared to Best Buy. At least my store.
I'm wondering what the sales will be like. Hopefully they have some good deals.

Great, now what will stop Best Buy from charging whatever they want for their products (like they don't already). I feel sad though, it's been around as long as I've been alive. It's their own fault though for failing to adapt. The same thing happened to Kmart, except Sears Roebuck was there to rescue them. It's a really, really bad time to lose your job. All that's going to be left after all this is Wal-Mart (not really, it just feels that way)

I thought Kmart bought Sears a few years ago.MutantEnemy wrote:Great, now what will stop Best Buy from charging whatever they want for their products (like they don't already). Anyway I feel sad for all the people that are loosing their jobs over this. I'm wondering about Best Buy as well. If they start increasing their prices because of lack of competition I guess I'll have to start buying everything online.
Hopefully Target doesn't go under. A Wal-Mart only world scares me.

I've always hated Circuit City... their products are way overpriced, their support sucks, I tried to exchange a defective product and it took me 30 minutes and speaking with the manager to get it done... etc, etc.
That being said I don't like Best Buy much either. I stick to Micro Center for computer stuff and Amazon.com and other online retailers for video games and electronics. (Though most video games I can get at Target!)
I wonder what will happen to my 2-year warranty for my 80GB Zune, however. I bought it at Circuit City about a year ago and got a 2-year warranty through their affiliate. Will that "Circuit City Advantage" protection thing go down too or just their stores?

The warranties are still going to be honored.
I admit Circuit City has gone down hill in the past few years, but it wasn't always a bad store. It used to be a great place to shop. I remember when Best Buy first opened here, I always went to Circuit City. Best Buy back then was what Circuit City is to many people now. It seems like the stores traded places over the past decade or so...
Anyway I still went to Circuit City a lot because it was much easier to get in and out of quickly compared to the local Best Buy. The service is horrible, but I just learned to buy it and not worry about asking for anything (price match, etc...).
While some are happy the store is going under it sort of scares me. Its a big store, and a perfect example of just how bad things are right now. I have a feeling we still haven't seen the bottom, but I hope I'm wrong.

Well, when I called the 800 warranty number to ask about it before, they said what they do is give me a pre-paid shipping label, I mail it to them, and they send me a Circuit City gift card for the amount I paid for the product.
Are they just gonna send a check now instead? LOL
We had a local grocery store called Farmer Jack that went out of business a couple years ago, but now they're all owned by Kroger. Really not such a bad thing, the people who worked there just got jobs at the Kroger that bought the location... I can still get groceries for the same price...

No clue. There supposed to honor the warranties. Circuit City doesn't handle them anyway, its another company. I assume they would get yours repaired or replace, but it might be a YMMV type of thing.
Some sites are reporting that some stores have already marked everything down 30%. I really need to get by the store and see what type of deals they are having. Wouldn't mind picking up a few things if the price is right.

I don't know if it's the same at all Circuit City's but be sure to check out any holiday DVD's (they were marked 75% off as opposed to the 20% off "regular" ones).
I picked up:

I picked up:

Shrek the Halls
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Chuck Jones)

I read somewhere that sales for up to 30% off of things are going to start, but I don't remember when. Anyone know when this will happen? Also, most Circuit City stores are saying that they are not going to honor advertised prices. I got the weekly ad and it said that the movies Saw I - IV are on sale for $4.99 each. So instead of paying the advertised $4.99 for Saw IV, I will have to pay the $21.99 (yes, they actually are selling it for $21.99, despite the other stores selling it for anywhere from $11.99 to $14.99)?! That's outrageous! If that's the case, I will NOT be buying it.

The ads are worthless right now. Even new releases advertised in the Sunday ads are going to be sent back/not sold from what I have heard.DisneyFreak5282 wrote:I read somewhere that sales for up to 30% off of things are going to start, but I don't remember when. All stores are starting the liquidation process, but prices vary. Everything goes back to MSRP for the liquidation then the discounts are added, so some stuff is going to be more expensive than normal.
Good deal on the holiday DVDs. Was this on the older Peanuts set, or the recently released one? I need to check these out.

No prob . . . just be sure to ask about the extra discount for the holiday movies. I returned the next day to pick up a few more and had to remind the same cashier about it, as she was prepared to just give me the regular 20% discount for them. I was extra concerned because the holiday discount sign had disappeared in the span of one day, lol.DarthPrime wrote:Thanks. I'll have to check this out.

I'm guessing that the discount will vary from store to store, but at my local one, the one cashier told me that they were taking 75% off the original price, and were taking an additional 15% off that price! If I were you I'd take it up to the register and ask if there are any additional holiday discounts on top of the regular ones, they should be able to tell how much. If you're lucky it'll be under $2 like most of the ones I've picked up.DisneyFreak5282 wrote:I saw "The Essential Now That's What I Call Christmas" in the Holiday Discount bin, would you happen to know how much that cost?

In that 20% off bracket of Movies....at least at the circuit city I went to that also includes Blu Rays.....I bought 2 Blu rays from them last saturday...
The Mask starring Jim Carrey (Blu Ray) (believe it or not I have never seen the movie....I have yet to get around to watching it yet....I'll post in off topic as to why I have been offline for the past month....
and I got
Superman: Doomsday Blu Ray
and a bottle of disgusting Grape Vitamin water (they said someone had come into the store and bought out all of the soda... so I was left with very little choice)
all for around $50
