Doctor Who Magazine has revealed [most of?] the 2009 DVD list...

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content/id/69 ... unced.html

Summary:

Frontier In Space/Planet of the Daleks 2 pack - no date, but includes a recoloured episode 3 of Planet of the Daleks!

The Rescue/The Romans 2 pack - coming in February (and already ordered by myself!)

Attack of the Cybermen (1 disc, not 2 as stated on Play)

Delta and the Bannermen

The Deadly Assassin (Wheee! Fried Egg Master!)

Image of the Fendahl

The War Games (3 discs)

the article lists special features for all where known, but The War Games sounds packed.

I read about this and am excited for War Games and the Dalek War boxset! The new colourisation/colour recovery process for PotD3 sounds amazing, and I can't wait to see the results. (I've never seen the story either, so I'm generally excited for the whole "wow, I'm gonna see the second Third Doctor Dalek story!"). I wonder if we'll also get a Season 10 boxset as well...

OK, I've actually read the article now (picked up my DWM this morning) and it ends with a casual aside saying 5 more stories have yet to be revealed for 2009. Those five will be a combination of single story releases and one more box set (number of stories in the box unrevealed).

It's interesting that the Planet of the Daleks B/W episode has been recoloured using the technique I mentioned earlier in this thread of the chroma dots on the B/W film recordings off the video monitor, again showing DTS Digital can learn a thing or two from committed fans at the BBC!

Oh and Escapay, just pick say 5 clichés from Terry's other Dalek scripts (especially a countdown - gotta have a countdown in a Terry Nation script) and hey presto, you'll probably be able to write Planet of the Daleks sight-unseen. :)

I hope the boxset is the Black Guardian Trilogy. I remember rumblings about it being released sometime in 2009. If not that, then a Mara two-pack would be good too (and it'd help complete Season 19!).

Regarding individual stories, I wouldn't mind seeing Underworld get a release. I watched it a few months ago (downloaded a torrent) and it's quite good even with the obvious CSO, though apparently not many Who fans would agree with me. :P

A quick review of Battlefield which I've almost exhausted since my Xmas holiday away.

As people may know, I'm a huge supporter of Sylvester McCoy's era in general, even some of Season 24 (Paradise Towers is a superb script which I feel could easily be adapted for modern WHO. It's a shame about some of the implementation, but I can easily see past that when viewing it. However, I never had much positive to say about Battlefield (although oddly, I liked the "Boom" bit everyone else seems to single out as the worst aspect of the production. Lordy, there's much worse than overenthusiastic "Booms" and pottery pig stories to pick on). This DVD has raised my appraisal of the story a little, but only a little.

The Movie Edit is no Curse of Fenric, but interesting. The new effects are hardly state of the art (not sure if this is down to budget, intent to retain the feel of the existing effects or both) but its amazing how even these add to the actual storytelling. More important is the new sound mix, which not only dials down the musical score, but adds significant sound effects. It's an improvement on the episodic original, but again when watched in one non-stop sitting, the flaws of the story are even more apparent.

Again, what saves this DVD is the frankness displayed in the supplements. Once again, this is no Hollywood style co-appreciation love in. Aaronovich is particularly scathing of his script both on his featurette and on the commentary. Cartmel goes someway to praise the script every time Aaronovich states his unhappiness but slates the production. Poor Aldred, Courtney and Bruce seem to be somewhat in the middle - they acknowledge the production problems, but still have plenty of good to say about the filming and the final production. However Aaronovich and Cartmel dominate the commentary, and I'm pleased that they do as its always more fascinating to hear about how the story was originally intended to be seen.

The other supplement of value is the interview/monologue with Jean Marsh where she discusses her three roles on the series. I don't know if it's me or her, but all three roles seem to imply some form of incest! Yes, even the 1965 tea-time showing of The Crusade!

The Season 26 Press Launch trailer is frankly appalling. No wonder season 26 got little publicity from either the BBC or the British mainstream media. Such a shame when it really was getting more mature scripts, concepts and ideas - how anyone could undersell Curse of Fenric or Ghost Light so badly is a question that can never be answered with a satisfactory answer.

I've yet to see the production notes or picture gallery (or listen to the isolated score... but I'm not sure anyone would want to do the latter; its not particularly good).

I have two labels for my Doctor Who DVDs - the first is where the story is go good, you just have to have it on DVD. The second is where the supplements are so good, you have to have it on DVD. Battlefield falls into the latter category.

Finally a not-so-complimentary review of the E-Space Trilogy DVD set.
http://www.denofgeek.com/Reviews/182026 ... eview.html
I'm still looking forward to this though - to see Warriors Gate in Restoration Team quality really will be a treat (even if I never understood the story as such). It was literally about 20 years ahead of its time.

Paradise Towers

Post by Prince Charming 12 »

Net,

I noticed your quip about Paradise Towers having a superb script and I must disagree with you. The concept of kitchen appliances eating the residences belongs on a Sponge Bob cartoon and not in Who! I think you are at least acknowledging the rudimentary set designs, when you say the "implementation of it". When the monster in the basement is designed like a plywood box with neon lights, it's time to start watching soap operas!

I think it has been well documented about the production problems with the "classic series" in the final three seasons and this story sure adds credence to them.

It's not a quip. Paradise Towers does have a superb script. It's one of the best examples of "World Building" that Doctor Who has ever done. Different castes and classes had totally different speech patterns. The Towers themselves had a fanciful (but still creditable) history.

Compare the society and environment of Paradise Towers to that we see in such "classics" as Frontier in Space, Planet of the Spiders, even the society of the Ark in The Ark in Space, or countless others from the 3rd or 4th Doctor's eras.

What lets Paradise Towers down is the cheapness (you know, had it been done right, the cheapness of the sets could of actually been a plus point), the general lack of willingness for anyone in the design department to rise to the challenge of the scripts, so-so direction and the combination of Bonnie Langford and Richard Briers; the former just by being Bonnie and the latter by camping it up.

Of course, in that atmosphere its easy to overlook the script and concentrate on the presentation - for example no kitchen appliances "ate" anyone. They murdered them. Again if done correctly a terrifying (but admittedly hardly original) idea.

Paradise Towers is about a small microcosm of a world where circumstance has made society crumble and fracture. The caretakers and especially the Chief Caretaker (as scripted) are in some form of denial of this fact.

Of course 80's who had problems - nobody can deny that - just watch the Trials and Tribulations documentary on Trial of a Timelord. But most (not all, but most) of that was from the BBC themselves. While I have no love apart from ironic for Time and the Rani, and little love for Delta and the Bannermen (although I can appreciate it as an 'experiment') I have a lot more time and respect for Paradise Towers and Dragonfire. No matter what the faults were when on screen, hardly any were in the script IMO.

It's a shame Delta and the Bannermen is down for a 2009 release - it will give the McCoy haters more ammunition (like Battlefield, I doubt an the extended episode 1 will make any difference) and I doubt any documentary will change people's minds either - Delta is basically what it set out to be - a (supposedly) fun romp through the 1950's. I don't think it ever aimed to be anything bigger.

As for the DVDs I have to say that while I am looking forward to the Dalek War twinpack, I'm not doing so for the stories. Both are overlong, full of by then familiar Who clichés and IMO very little actual imagination. At least Frontier in Space has Delgardo's Master though.

However, the extras for the sets sound fantastic - from the Dalek Stripped for Action to the Delgardo documentary. So I'm actually looking forward to this release the most, but only for the supplements.

If we were doing most anticipated by story, I'll pick The Rescue/The Romans. I love The Rescue and find it very underrated. I'm a little disappointed the extras seem to light for this. I would have loved a featurette on the first companion change in the show.

This Christmas I received the first three seasons of the newer Doctor Who (Rose through Martha) because no one in my family knows how to use Amazon, which means that any chance to receive the older episodes was out of the question.

I haven't seen Paradise Towers, I watch Who mostly when I can grab the dvds from our public library and then sit and watch them during the weekends when I'm not in school or working. But I love them all.

I'll probably pick up the release of The Next Doctor when it's released but is there any speculation that it will be re-released with the next season set like the other Christmas specials have been.

Well, there won't be a "season" set (the specials are officially still part of season 4 according to the production codes) but it is more than likely that the 5 specials (xmas 2008 to xmas-new year 2009) will be released as a boxset. We'll have to see if the Next Doctor release this coming Monday has a commentary track or not. If not, its almost definitive that there will be another release.

The Rescue/Romans twin pack officially announced:
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content/id/69 ... ruary.html

The Romans includes more than the BBFC listings revealed to date would indicate. Sadly, The Rescue seems somewhat bare - its a shame, because I have a fondness for the story and I think a feature on Vicki and how she was the first "replacement" companion would be interesting on both a character and production angle.

Also at the end of the DVDTimes piece, it mentions Key of Marinus, another Hartnell story will also be out in 2009.

Only 4 missing stories now... and it's likely one is The Twin Dilemma (and the boxset is the Black Guardian Trilogy?)

Stupid Question time :)

I came across a Doctor Who..boxset/dvd set would it be worth a blind buy if I somehow managed to get the money? (or buying at all?)

I can't fully remember what one it is but I remember reading the back and it said something about Sea Devils and Silurians.

Any feedback is appreciated :)

The Boxset you're thinking about is "Beneath the Surface" which collects three stories dealing with two classic Who monsters: the Silurians and the Sea Devils. Two stories are from the Third Doctor (the 7-episode "Doctor Who and the Silurians" and the 6-episode "The Sea Devils") and the third story is from the Fifth Doctor (the 4-episode "Warriors of the Deep").

"Doctor Who and the Silurians" is from the Third Doctor's first season, and it actually took me a couple tries to get into (IMO, it starts off slow and doesn't really pick up until the third or fourth episode). I found "The Sea Devils" to be the better of the two, probably because it also had the Master (who had been captured and imprisoned in "The Daemons", and the Doctor and Jo Grant are going to visit him in "The Sea Devils") and was all around more enjoyable to watch.

"Warriors of the Deep" is...well, it is what it is. Apparently a lot of Who fans who saw it back in the day think very badly of this story, but I liked it. Still, it could have been better (the Myrka for one, but you learn all about that in the documentary and featurette). I remember reading on the RT forum that if you watch it on a television in black and white and the contrast turned way down, it gives off a better atmosphere to the whole story. I tried it, and it actually works. But it's still a story that you'll have to go in with an open mind and not immediately hate it because the majority of Doctor Who fans do.

All in all, I don't think it'd be the best set to start with if you're going to dive into classic "Doctor Who", but if you're willing to give it a chance and the price is right (like, is it used or new and on sale?), then go for it.

Not unless new and on sale is 60% stupid London Drugs. I think I'll skip it over for now then, perhaps until the price comes way way...way down.

Any suggestions for what sets would be better ones to pick up?

Well it all depends on what kind of "Who" you want to watch. Are you solely interested in new Who or want to also get into the classic stuff.

For New Who, go for any of the season sets (though I'd probably pick Season 3 over the others, it's my favorite).

For classic Who, it depends on which Doctor you want to watch, or which types of stories. I normally say "introduce yourself to classic Who with Earthshock" as I feel it's the best way to introduce someone to the classic series. It's worked with my siblings and my cousins, while the Key to Time stories worked with a few friends at school. However, if I were to recommend a story from each Doctor that's currently on DVD as a way to introduce yourself to that Doctor...

First Doctor - "The Beginning" Boxset (what better way than to start at the beginning?)

Second Doctor - "Tomb of the Cybermen" (the better of the two Cybermen stories that still exist "in full", as the other one "The Invasion" is completed via animated episodes of the missing 1st and 4th episodes, and is overtly long and drags in the first half.)

Third Doctor - "The Time Warrior" (Sarah Jane Smith's first story!)

Fourth Doctor - "The Ribos Operation" (part of The Key to Time season, and it's got my favourite Doctor/Companions set-up of the Doctor, Romana I, and K-9 Mark II)

Fifth Doctor - "Earthshock" (I'm a Cybermen fan, and I actually like Adric)

Sixth Doctor - "Vengeance on Varos" (probably my favourite Sixth Doctor story)

Seventh Doctor - "Remembrance of the Daleks" (of the little I've seen of Seventh Doctor, this one is probably the only one I've seen more than once so far)

These aren't exactly the "best" stories, and some of them I picked mainly because they're my favourites ("Ribos", "Earthshock"), but they can probably help you get acquainted with the classic series.

How many Doctor Who fans does it take to change a lightbulb?

None. They just put Warriors of the Deep on TV instead

In all honestly I cannot recommend anyone purchase a classic who story without experiencing one for free first. It is very different than the current series in pacing and production quality. Also, its best watched an episode at a time, preferably with a day or two at least between each episode so that the stories don't drag on.

See if you can rent or view some old who online first. I know iTunes has Classic Who available.

I'm not sure where I should post this, but I decided to post it here being as its primarily to do with restoration.

I just purchased Nothing at the End of the Lane: The Magazine of Doctor Who Research and Restoration It cost a fair bit for what it is (about £20 for 146 pages, softbound) but I understand such a niche product is going to have a very small print-run (in fact, its printed on demand!)

I've had a quick flick through it, and it looks fascinating. It's half about archives and restoration issues, and half about researching into (primarily) the programme's early years. The Omnibus has two magazines, the second of which was first published in 2005, so sadly the information is probably a little of out date when it comes to the comprehensive archives holding lists.

The next batch of Region 2 Doctor Who titles have been put up for ordering on Play.com, and they include a surprise release!

July gets

The War Games (3 discs) - BBFC extras are going through for this now - and seem complete, but already we have over three hours of supplements plus commentaries on all episodes.

Remembrance of the Daleks: Special Edition (2 discs) - yes what was previously exclusive in the Davros boxset now seems to be coming out as a stand alone release - including the Davros Connections documentary. A quick reminder, the Special Edition includes a much improved audio/visual transfer (including a 5.1 sound mix, the full visual effects as transmitted, and overall improved visual quality) as well as a couple of new supplements.

August gets

The Black Guardian Trilogy (says 3 discs, but most likely 4) - consisting of three Peter Davison stories - Mawdryn Undead, Terminus and Enlightenment. All stories have extensive optional CGI improvements (Enlightenment getting a whole new edit - hence the 4th disc) as well as substantial supplements. Although apparently not included if the BBFC listings are complete, a really feel Mawdryn Undead should have a supplement on UNIT Dating :)
