"Fox/MGM just announced that they will be releasing a special edition of Child's Play in September. I don't remember all of the details from the announcement but it's definitely 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and features a commentary (with participants TBD) and retrospective documentaries. I'll post up more details and cover-art as soon as they are made available. It's about freaking time, huh?"

Too bad Laz isn't here anymore. He'd definitely love this news.

Bloodydisgusting.com has got more news on the 20th AE as told by creator Don Manicini! Thanks to Horror DVD Forums:

http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/12676/

"I would be shocked if a Blu-Ray release doesn't come the same day as the 20th Anniversary DVD release of Don Mancini's Child's Play, which will be jammed with brand new extra features. This weekend SpookyDan caught up with the writer of the classic 1988 film, which starred Brad Dourif as serial killer named Charles Lee Ray who transfers his soul into a doll to hide from the police, only to end up as a late Christmas present for a little boy.

Chucky fans should rejoice, earlier this week we spoke with writer Don Mancini about the upcoming 20th Anniversary Edition of CHILD'S PLAY on DVD… and yes, it's completely loaded!

He told us that DVD, which arrives at retailers on September 9, is loaded with extra features thanks to Producer Michelle Gold. Still no word yet on of we'll get a Blu-Ray edition.

Here are some details:
- Commentary track with creator/writer Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner.
- A second track with FX guru Kevin Yagher, Catherine Hicks (Kevin's wife; they met on the film), and now-grown-up Alex Vincent.
- A third track with Mancini and Chucky (Brad Dourif voicing in character).
- The film itself is presented in the long overdue 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen.
- Making-of documentary blending archival footage with new, on-camera interviews with Mancini, Kirschner, Yagher, Hicks, Vincent, Chris Sarandon, and Brad Dourif.

The strange absence of director Tom Holland is very unfortunate. I hope they get a chance to add a commentary track from him as well. We heard through the grapevine that he is excited to be a part of this disc, and had not yet been asked (Michelle Gold… can you make this happen?).

Watch for an official announcement soon."

You read it right folks! Not 1, not 2, but 3 commentary tracks! Now, let's hope the new transfer is from the original widescreen 35mm print!

As glad as I am for Child's Play fans, I have to ask...

THREE commentary tracks? And yet Fox/MGM couldn't be bothered to ever record a new one for The Silence of the Lambs? It's understandable if they didn't want to or couldn't acquire the rights to the Criterion commentary, but they could just as easily have gotten different participants to do a new one.

Also, when the hell will Fox/MGM revisit classic titles like Night of the Hunter, Judgment at Nuremberg, It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, and The Best Years of Our Lives? And 2008 is a perfect time to release a 20th Anniversary Edition of Rain Man with the R2/R4 extras that aren't on the R1 disc, as well as new extras.

Yeah, this movie was long in my list of horror movies that deserved Special Edition treatment. After reading about the supplements, I'm seriously disappointed that director Tom Holland just doesn't seem to want anything to do with the movie. You can, however, catch him over on YouTube showing his love for Psycho II. And hear an audio commentary on the abysmal Thinner DVD.

I'm mostly interested to hear what writer Don Mancini has to say about the people involved with the movie changing his script. I'm told it was changed a lot.
