So would it be accurate to say that the only true pictures are the tower and Rapunzel now? And the logo?

Rapunzel

Yay Old Fish Tale agrees!

Oh, I see what you're asking Neal. Well, if you need it for a project, unless you can wait until the last day before it's due to decide, just in case Disney releases something between now and the due date, the safest thing to use would be only the concept art with Bastian climbing the tower, and the new logo...which I don't like as much as the old pictures! :( But you could talk about the film and just wait until the last minute to slip the most recent pictures, right?

It's due this coming Monday. I don't think there will be much more before then.

So you think that the image of Rapunzel is outdated?

I believe the girl in the picture wasn't even Rapunzel herself!
It was Claire, the girl that got into the fairytale, and who replaced Rapunzel.
Rapunzel was changed into a squirell (SP?).

But since they changed the plot now, I believe that isn't how she looks anymore.

Rapunzel

Post by Disney Duster »

Huh...you may be right about that, supertalies!

The only thing that makes me think differently is how those images and animation previews stressed that what we were seeing was a representation of Rapunzel and I swear they did mention the design was of Rapunzel or at least that's what the public would think, so...

Disney either misled or, well, since the pictures and animation were just tests, they could have screwed with us and had Rapunzel in squirrel and girl forms together!

Neal, since it's possible the picture is outdated, the safest thing is Bastian climbing the tower!

Rapunzel, I'm told, is poised to launch into production after a lengthy pre-production.

"It's gone through different permutations. Used to be pretty dark, but not it's lightened up a lot and going to be a musical. We're pretty near to getting it rolling into the production phase."

Awesome, then we might probably soon see some real footage.

However I am a little worried about the "used to be pretty dark, but now it's lightened up" part. What was wrong with it being dark? Might have made for a more mature movie and thus also appeal to a more mature audience.
I do however like the idea that it's a musical and I do hope it hits the same notes as Beauty and the Beast did, since that one was a bit darker as well.

i don't think the whole dark to light comment was about the feel of the film. I think the person speaking was refering to it's development, as in they stuck the project in a dark room and turned lights back on as far as their work on it.

No, I think they ARE talking about the feel of the film.

I'm worried too.

actually now that i mull over it a bit, they probably do mean the feel of the film. It does however depend on what is light and dark to the person speaking. We do know that it started as a comedy then went to a classic feel then a musical. Maybe the classic feel was way too serious?

Beauty and the Beast wasn't dark -- that movie was a Harlequin Romance Novel. You want dark in Disney animation? Watch mother quail blasted out of the sky in Bambi, or Education for Death, or the Rite of Spring, Night on Bald Mountain, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, or the cruel abuse of Penny in The Rescuers.

Beauty and the Beast can't hold a match, let alone a candle, to the "dakness" in those films.

I don't think there's any point comparing how much more "dark" films are to others. B&tB had its share of "darkness," even if it wasn't on the same level of those you listed.

Also, maybe they meant that the movie just went from a Hunchback to a Sleeping Beauty. I'm not too worried. I don't think a lack of bone-crushing "darkness" means the film will be any less serious. Most of Disney's films are musicals, but they're never any less serious for it, imo. I think they just meant they've added more lighter moments so the movie isn't too gray, drenched and depressing in its mood.

The same exact thing was said about Beauty and the Beast when it came out. That the story had been darker until they brought Howard Ashman in and he turned it into a musical. And that turned out ok. Granted, this is a different creative team, but somebody's subjective opinion on how dark a film is has nothing to do with how good it will be.

My guess is they got rid of the parts where Rapunzel gets pregnant while he prince wanders through briar patches and gets his eyes poked out.

I guess the very first thing they cut was the pregnancy. Even before they changed anything about the movie's story.

I am just so excited about this movie and I don't want it to be a disappointment. I do hope it turns out to be a BatB

Do you know what I thought was particularly dark for a Disney movie? How they harpooned Willie the Whale in "The Whale Who Sang At The Met" in Make Mine Music!

Not yet, but it would be interesting to see what she looks like.
