technology that puts viewers in control of their viewing preferences. With Disney’s Fastplay™ viewers
simply put in the disc, relax, and the DVD automatically navigates for them.

Volume One
This superb volume includes “The Flying Gauchito” (South America), “In Dutch” (Holland), “Goliath II”
(India), “Mickey Down Under” (Australia), “African Diary” (Africa) and “A Cowboy Needs A Horse”
(U.S.A.). Fans will also discover “Grievance Of A Starmaker,” a special animated short that has not been
seen before outside of Japan. Following a Japanese story competition, the Disney Studio turned the
winning story into an animated short. “Grievance Of A Starmaker” makes its English-language debut in
this volume.

Volume Two
This excellent volume includes “Pedro” (South America), “The Olympic Champ” (Greece), “The Brave
Little Tailor” (Great Britain) and “Susie, The Little Blue Coupe” (U.S.A.). Also releasing on DVD for the
very first time are “Peter And The Wolf” (Russia) and “Crazy With The Heat” (Middle East.)

So this the fourth line devoted to the shorts (outside of the Treasures). I've got to say, they've at least improved on the theming. The CCF's are a hodgepodge of various cartoons with a very light theme to each volume, Timeless Tales has some literary quality to it and is perhaps the only really themed set aside from this one, and Funny Factory I still don't understand the need for, it's like a CCF redux.

Can't say I'm gonna buy these, but it's nice to see Disney making stuff available at an economic price for casual fans and parents.

I LOVE this short! I have it on VHS, and it probably ranks in my top 3 favorite cartoons that star one of the "Fab 4"(Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Pluto).

Basically it's about Donald and Goofy driving in the desert and end up searching for gas. It's not loaded with gags like most shorts, but I just love it for some reason, probably due with me watching it alot as a kid. Goofy makes some funny one-liners though!

Since this is one of the few shorts that has yet to get released on DVD, I"ll probably gladly buy Vol. 2 just for this.(Although, I could just wait for "The Chronological Donald Vol. 3" to come out)

I was eagerly awaiting the contents of these DVDs since they poped up on the radar yesterday, but I'm a little disappointed!
They are good collections, but not much new to offer the die-hard fan!?
I was hoping they would be Mouse Works collections!
Oh Well....

By the by...does it seem necessary to label two of the cartoons from the U.S.A since most of the classic shorts take place in America!! (or at least reflect America in the 30's - 50's!?!?

In the grand tradition of Disney Treasure Demos. Here comes another collection that fits in with that category. Personally It would of been beter just to release only the Treasures instead of these Mini DVD's.

Yes, seem to remember this one being available for download on the Toonzone Disney Shorts site some years back, and I saw the short that way. Definitely earns the title "classic", and I am puzzled as to why it didn't make it into at least one of the Treasures with a Maltin introduction.

It's becuase that cartoon was made in 1947 and the Chronological Donald Sets have so far only reached 1946.

THowever, the Inclusion of Susie, The Little Blue Coupe on this DVD after being inexplicably and unceremoniously omitted from the Rarities set is inexcusable. [/quote]

Yeah, but Treasures are given a limited run, are tailored more for collectors, and cost only slightly more (content wise, it's cheaper to get one treasure set as opposed to two of any of the economy lines).

These releases are tailored for the casual fan, someone who's not so in love with Mickey and the gang like us, but wants to have a couple cartoons.

Also, wouldn't you rather have your kids handle the cheap volumes when they want to play a cartoon over the Treasures sets?

This seemed as good a place to post this as any.

I'm really interested in Disney's post 2000 shorts.

I've managed to see 'One By One', 'John Henry', 'The Little Match Girl', 'The Cat That Looked At A King', 'The Origin of Stitch', and 'A Dairy Tale'. I am looking forward to seeing 'Destino' when it releases on DVD.

That leaves 'Lorenzo' and 'How to Hook Up Your Home Theater'.

I discovered there was a short made in 2002 yesterday - 'Grievance of a Starmaker'. It sounds cool and I want to see it. Except, I'm not interested in the "It's A Small World of Fun! Volume 1" DVD enough to purchase it for one short alone.

I can't find it on YouTube. Does anyone know where else it could be at or seen at?

No reason to get this if you have the WDT and all six the Disney package films. Unless you relly would like to have of coures Grievance Of A Starmaker wich i don't know anything about and cant find any information at imdb.com or bcdb.com.

So far the "It's A Small World of Fun!" DVD is the only place to get it. But if you're apprehensive about getting it simply for the interest of one short, perhaps you could be interested in it out of interest for "A Cowboy Needs A Horse." It's one of the most whimsical and imaginative shorts from Disney, and is also available on the "Disney Rarities" Treasures set (so if you already have "Rarities", it's one less reason for IASW, but if you don't, it's a good primer to the "Rarities" set as "Goliath II" is also included in IASW).

The "It's A Small World of Fun!" DVDs are not exactly the best things Disney has to offer (I only have Volume 3 which was for reviewing purposes and is one of the weaker titles in the brief line), but they're great for casual fans or those who only want certain favorites (i.e. "A Cowboy Needs A Horse"). I know I'd probably pick up Volume 1 in a heartbeat for "A Cowboy Needs A Horse" if I wasn't aware of the "Rarities" set.

I tried to find a torrent for just the short but couldn't find one - or even a torrent for the full DVD.

I own these releases, as well as the other releases featuring the shorts, including WDT-sets. I find these easier to watch w/o getting into the tins all the time, and it's fun to just pop these in and go. I think all of the non-Treasure release are worth owning.

I have been planning on buying Small World of Fun 1 for Grievance of a Starmaker as well. I have two questions if anyone can answer them.

First, I hadn't heard of 'The Origin of Stitch', and 'A Dairy Tale'. Are they available on any DVDs? If not, how have they been released?

Second, what other shorts are out there on Disney DVDs that aren't available in the Treasures sets? I have all the Treasures sets, and I recently bought the Holiday compilation that has Small One (though it's an altered version of Small One due to some of the song lyrics).

Thanks in advance to anyone who can inform me on these points.

Well, excluding the Mickey Mouse shorts (from "The House of Mouse") I can fill you in on the 2000's other shorts:

'John Henry' (2000) - Released on "Disney's American Legends" DVD. Only place to get it on DVD, except it is a full screen version when the true ratio was wide screen.

'Grievance of a Starmaker' - Released on "It's A Small World Of Fun! Volume One" DVD only and cannot be found anywhere else.

'Destino' (2003) - Releasing in 2010 on its own DVD on the same day as the "Fantasia" and "Fantasia/2000" Blu-ray releases. Will include a documentary about the short in order to increase buying value. Not currently available on DVD.

'A Dairy Tale' (2004) - This is a bonus feature on the "Home on the Range" DVD and cannot be found anywhere else.

'Lorenzo' (2004) - This is not available on DVD or any format. Currently it's only shown specially - such as at film festivals and Disney cruises. Possibly (this is my assumption) will release on the 'Destino' DVD or "Fantasia" or "Fantasia/2000" re-releases.

'One By One' (2004) - Available on "The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride" Special Edition DVD and cannot be found anywhere else.

'The Cat That Looked At A King' (2004) - Available on the "Mary Poppins" 40th Anniversary DVD. There is a 45th Anniversary DVD coming out this January 27. It may be re-released on there, as well. Can't be found anywhere else.

'The Origin of Stitch' (2005) - Available on "Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has A Glitch" DVD and cannot be found anywhere else.

'The Little Match Girl' (2006) - Available on "The Little Mermaid" Platinum Edition DVD and cannot be found anywhere else.

...

'Destino', 'Lorenzo', 'One By One', and 'The Little Match Girl' were all made for a third Fantasia that was once called "Fantasia 2006" but the film was canceled and the four shorts completed for it got or will get separate releases.

'Grievance of a Starmaker' was made by Walt Disney Studios Japan and was part of a contest where a person wrote the story and won the contest so their story was made into an animated short.

'A Dairy Tale' was directed by the same people behind "Home on the Range" and was made especially for the DVD as an extra purchase incentive. The same mindset was behind 'The Origin of Stitch' - to be an incentive for people to buy the Direct-To-Video sequel to the Disney Animated Classic.

Upcoming shorts include:

There will be a new short starring Bolt from "BOLT" for its March DVD/Blu-ray release that will premiere exclusively on the DVD/Blu-ray.

"How to Hook Up Your Home Theater" was completed in 2007 and shown before "National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets", no word on a DVD release.

"Glago's Guest" was completed in 2008 and supposed to show before "BOLT" but got pulled. It may show before "The Princess and the Frog".

"The Ballad of Nessie" is the last announced upcoming Disney short and there is no word on a release.

The only ones I don't have there are Home on the Range and the It's a Small World of Fun with Grievance. I've been meaning to get Home on the Range for a while. Maybe this week or this month at least. I'll definitely eventually get that Small World DVD too. I guess I completely forgot about seeing the Origin of Stitch. Now that I think about it, it sounds familiar.

Interesting that Disney will be animating Nessie again. They had him in that old featurette that is a bonus on Pete's Dragon.

Aren't there also some Chip 'n' Dale shorts out that are not on any of the Treasures sets? Any others along that line? I have also wondered about that one DVD that has the MouseWorks Around the World in 80 Days short. I know it's some sort of educational DVD. Anyone know if it shows the short at any point complete and uninterrupted? I'd be interested in getting it IF it doesn't interrupt the story with quizes or something.

"The Lone Chipmunks", "Chicken in a Rough", and "Two Chips and a Miss". The first is in the Davy Crockett Two-Movie set, and the other two are in Classic Cartoon Favorites Volume 4.

Yes...

Then we go into the first cartoon, which is "Around the World in 80 Days." <snip> Halfway into the cartoon, we go back to learning. Viewers are tested with a series of questions on which animals live in different environments, with very generous hints pushing them in the right direction. <snip> Somehow this segues into the conclusion of the cartoon, in which Minnie Mouse is brought in, as a beautiful Indian princess who doesn't want to get married. A rescue is in order, as Mickey and Goofy race to get back home in time to save the orphanage.

Following this, we get a bookend to the opening portion of learning greetings in different languages. Now, we learn how to bid farewell in various tongues. One might think this is the end of our program, but actually, it's followed up by "Around the World in 80 Days"...again. This time, it's uninterrupted, but I can't imagine any viewer having a great desire to revisit this 12-minute cartoon just 15 minutes after seeing it end. What's even more perplexing is there's little specific educational value or content which strongly connects to the simple lessons that have been going on throughout.

Wow, I was hoping the uninterrupted cartoon would play first. Can't one just go directly to that? Perhaps with the skip button at least? Scene selection maybe?

That stinks about the Davy Crockett set too. I already own the Treasures, I don't really care about getting the movie set... Love the Lone Chipmunks short though... I might wait and see what next year's Treasures are before I get those. Perhaps I should wait before getting the Small World DVD too, but I'll definitely pick up Home on the Range soon.
