Should I buy Pete's Dragon now, or wait?

Post by tlc38tlc38 »

What are the chances of Pete's Dragon getting a new release in the near future? I really love this film and want to know if I should go ahead and buy the GC version or wait for a re-release.

2012 will be the 35th anniversary of the film, is this a likely release date or just wishful thinking?

I've been debating the same thing with myself for a while now. I figure that it should be coming soon, but in the end no one knows if what we'll get will actually be an improvement over the GC release. All in all, maybe we'd both be better off getting it now. I'm in if you're in! lol

Well, I was thinking about ordering it from Amazon tomorrow when I get paid. I'm also gonna get Haunted Mansion on Blu since it's only $16.99.

Given Disney's attitude towards their live-action film library, I would say go for it and get the DVD. I can't see Disney revisiting it with a new Anniversary DVD or Blu-Ray unless they're planning a sequel like Elliot Returns which could allow them to promote it by re-releasing Pete's Dragon. Perhaps one day it'll be on Blu-Ray, but I don't think it's gonna go Blu in the near future (as in not in the next 3-5 years).

The DVD that's out there is pretty good anyway. Art galleries, trailers, a Donald cartoon, and a few featurettes (vintage tv excerpts and a short theatrical piece). The movie is "restored" as much as possible to its original length, though 5 minutes still remain unaccounted for (it's likely the overture or something, though there are a couple songs that seem a bit shortened - one may argue that's a good thing).

go for it. I may do so, cause the 30th anniversary passed with no mention of a special edition release. It really stinks because its a great movie that deserves a new release. Of course, a new release would have a stupid music video messing up one of the classic songs.

And I keep saying they should get a NEW EDITION out before Mickey Rooney dies!

p.s. did anyone know that the villian of Pete's dragon is also the man who read the Harry Potter books on audio book format?

Should I or shouldn't I buy? (EDIT)

Post by The_Iceflash »

EDIT: Now I'm wondering about the Saludos Amigos/Three Caballeros DVD, the review here says the DVD isn't that great (I love both movies though). Some say I should get it and others say I shouldn't. I'm basically stumped on that one. I own Saludos Amigos on DVD but not the Three Caballeros. I did make up my mind on the rest below though.

Dinosaur: The 2-Disc collector's edition or the single-disc version? I see the single-disc version has a pan and scan version of the movie but on retail store websites it has listed as having both versions. (or it appears as such) (I want the wide-screen..)

Can anyone confirm that? Also, which is best for my money? It's one I've been wanting for a while but I don't want to spend too much for it. Thanks

Brother Bear 2-Disc special edition: I don't know if I should wait for a re-release or not. I can get it used for $9.99

Monster's, Inc 2-Disc: I can get it used for $12.99

Home on the range, Chicken little, and Treasure Planet: (I can get them for $10 each but don't know if I should wait for a re-release for them or not)[/b]

I asked this myself just the other day:
I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade the DVDs for two of my DACs or not...

I own the original release of both Dinosaur and Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

I wondered if the Collector's Editions of both of these films was worth the upgrade?

Wal-Mart has them for sale which makes it easy for me to get them (I have a Wal-Mart gift card I can use).

Are the added bonus features worth it?

My only concern is walmart.com lists both these CE's as being full screen. Is this a mistake on their part or is it true?

If it's true, I'd prefer to keep the original releases that I already have.

Here's the listings:

Dinosaur

Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Here was the answer:
Neal wrote:

Yes.

The Collector's Edition for Atlantis: The Lost Empire outshines pretty much every other two-disc set that Disney has released for their Animated Classics, including the Platinums.

Yes.

Neal wrote:

Yes.

The single-discs for Dinosaur and Atlantis feature both versions (widescreen and fullscreen), however the two-discs feature the movie in widescreen only.

I continued:
Final question - do you think the prices listed there are reasonable for these sets?
...and was responded to with:
Normally I'd say "the material is definitely worth its SRP, so any price is good enough". But if you wanna save a little cash and have an FYE or MovieStop nearby, you can always chance a look there to see if they have it cheaper in used-but-good condition. I got both of mine at GameStop (back when they sold used DVDs) for like $7.99 each, because I think when they were pricing it after someone sold it to them, they priced for the single-disc rather than the two-disc (gotta love mistakes like that!). Also, some online sellers may have it cheaper (try deepdiscount.com or overstock.com)

But since you're getting them because you have a Wal-Mart gift card, then go for it.

I say buy it now. I went ahead and purchased it and Bedknobs and Broomsticks now and will definitely purchase Bedknobs and Broomsticks if it ever gets a updated dvd-only re-release. I do agree, if updates are done, you can bet that most of the extras on the GC releases will be absent.
I find you pompous, judgemental, and completely self-absorbed.........would you be my friend?

The thing with collector's edition and waiting for rereleases is that usually the newer version drops some of the bonus material seen on the collector's edition. For example, I looked everywhere for a copy of the Emperor's New Groove CE before I snapped and bought the New Groove Edition which looks to missing quite a bit of material. The only ones I'm waiting for rereleases of are some of the Gold Classics ones and some of the live action stuff from the 90's (namely Flubber and Jungle 2 Jungle- both of which appear to be only in Foolscreen or non- anamorphic widescreen each).

Both Special Editions are stacked with bonus features, and have excellent picture and image quality (DTS sounds amazing) so I don't see a reason to wait for a re-release.

Especially since both Collector's Editions of Dinosaur and Atlantis are in print, it doesn't make much sense to wait for a rerelease. They are very solid sets, and, as MrIncredible said, if you wait for a rerelease, some of the bonus features could be left off of the new releae.

Thanks! I bought Atlantis Collector's edition used yesterday for $17.99

Should I wait to get Chicken little, home on the range, and treasure planet or are the current DVD releases good enough to warrant a purchase? (I know the reviews here say one thing but I'm curious what others think as well). I can currently get them all used for $9.99 each..

The_Iceflash - I don't think those films will get a re-release soon enough for you to wait. They just didn't do well enough the first time and they are also still fairly new.

ichabod's list in the second post at this thread sums it up pretty well what to buy.

I'm also working on my own 'buy this, not that' list for the Disney Animated Classics. I'll post it soon.

Hope this helps!

Oh that does! Thanks. 8)

Even though that says that it's wise to get the new Saludos Amigos/Three Caballeros DVD, the review here says the DVD isn't that great (I love both movies though). I'm basically stumped on that one. The thread did make up my mind on the rest though.

Yep. I'm going to by Dinosaur as soon as I find that one used. (It's $39.99 new)

I'd personally get the OOP disc for Three Caballeros. The new transfer on the Caballeros Collection is only marginally better, the GC disc has better cartoons than the current disc, and most importantly, you get the trailer (I love trailers). The less-than-2-minute Walt interview on the new disc, however valuable you deem it to be, is a minimal loss.

But if you're not to concerned about the extras and you just want the movies (and the convenience of them both being on one disc), you could trade in Saludos, Amigos at MovieStop and use the store credit and some cash for the Caballeros Collection.

Plus, Saludos, Amigos will be edited either way (), so you wouldn't have to worry about "Should I get the edited or unedited version?"

No, treble dip.
