I received an IOU paper on Christmas about Donald 4, which they got from one of those "new and used" sellers. This means that it's on the way. So I've checked the mail for the past few days and I've not gotten anything. Now, I've tried to remain patient, but such patience is starting to wear thin now. I've checked the mail many times now, only to find nothing. What is up? Has it gotten lost or something? What can I do? I can't just keep waiting day after day after day for it.

Well, how was I to know that they would run out so dang fast? I mean, I know there was the possibility that they might run out, but I never thought they actually would run out. Besides, what good would preordering have done?

1. The low print run of 39,500 should have been your first clue.

2. The fact that these are Treasures DVDs should be your second.

3. The fact that Donald Volume 3 sold out within months, as well as the fact that there are treasures from the past seven waves that also sell out should be some indication.

I mean, I know there was the possibility that they might run out, but I never thought they actually would run out.

It's a limited print run. There's no doubt about it, copies WILL run out. It's just a matter of how fast or how slow it takes to run out. This year it took less than a month for the wave to run out (sans "Annette").

Saying "I thought there was a possibility of running out, but never thought they would" is like saying "There's only 100 copies of the books and 1000 people want them, but I'm sure they'll still have some left over that I can buy later."

Besides, what good would preordering have done?

It would have ensured you'd get a copy delivered in the mail the day/week that it was released. It's like dinner reservations, you make them early so that when you want it, you get it.

Well, I got Donald 3 for Christmas when that one came out, so...

But I don't usually buy the DVDs myself. I have my parents usually do that. And they didn't know about the rapidity of them running out any more than I did.

That's not the point. The point is you should know by now that the Treasures can sell out fast, and sometimes they can get restocked but sometimes they can't. So you either get new waves as early as you can or run the risk of skipping out by waiting, even if it's just a few weeks. I learned that the hard way as I never had a chance to pick up Donald 3 and refuse to pay $80+ from scalpers online while still searching in brick&mortar stores.

Or they suddenly show up through the DMC...such as how I found Mason Ireton's gift...Walt Disney Treasures: Mickey Mouse in Living Color Volume 1...which I got darn lucky on finding it...


So with that being said....there might be some of Donald left on Disney Movie club when/if they introduce them to the club...

Well, that's where message boards like this come in handy, see ... you use them to keep yourself up to date. That way, when you see bits of information like "low print runs" and "get these things while you can," as we've seen in numerous posts, even if you don't get them for yourself you can possible alert potential purchasers ...

Plan ahead.

I knew when the Treasures were coming out at an early enough time where I can set money aside for the day they came out and then went and got them. I didn't pre-order. (But it's a good idea) As soon as I was able to put money aside I did. On the first day they had more than enough of each stocked. I was actually able to go through them and pick them out based on which tin had the best condition. The best bet would be to try to get to a Best Buy on the first day (if there's even one near you). They have plenty of them for good prices too. (They mark down their new releases).

This is where I should say that I watch the release dates, and have money put aside so that I can get the Disney Treasures when they hit the stores. Depending on someone else to get them, or hoping someone else will get them for me, I found has cost me dearly in some of the waves of the WDT's. I plan ahead, and when they come out, I am on them like PB&J on bread.

And waiting for a lower price, is no excuse either. With the WDT's, the sale price the first five days is generally the best you are going to get. That being said, I did find a "Chronological Donald Volume 3" at Best Buy over the Christmas holidays, and it was priced at $17.99, I picked it up and gave it as a gift to someone I knew who was a collector and had missed out on Volume 3 when it was originally released.

I've never collected the treasures before. I have Mickey in Color V2 just for "Mickey's Christmas Carol" but other than that none. I had been planning to ask for Dr. Syn for Christmas. I wasn't familiar with it until a few years ago when an old man at my church gave me a bootleg VHS of it as part of a graduation gift. I didn't have a VCR and since I didn't really know what it was never watched it. Mr. Earl later asked me if I had seen it and then told me more about what it was. When I explained that I had no way of watching it, he told me he would make me a DVD copy. Unfortunately, he died before he could ever do that. So, I was particularly looking forward to getting this treasure.

The week after Thanksgiving I was making a list of a few DVDs, this included, to give to my mom for my "wish list." That's when I learned how rare/in demand this was. When I was able to locate a copy from bn.com, I ordered it so I could be sure to get it. When it came, I gave it my parents and asked them to "give" it to me for Christmas. So I opened it Christmas morning, and on New Year's Day finally got to sit down and watch it. I loved it, but...

I had a surprised when I watched the making of feature on Disc 1. I saw one of my grad school professors! George Patterson was on the feature since he sang the theme song. Well, that same George Patterson is now a psychologist specializing in addiction (particularly to clients in the entertainment industry) and teaches as an adjunct professor to the Marriage and Family Therapy students at Fuller Theological Seminary. I graduated from that program in June. "Dr. George" as he is called told us that he had been a singer when he was younger and his group has recorded the Gilligan's Island theme song and appeared in an episode as "The Mosquitoes." I wasn't sure what else he had done. Turns out he and sometimes with his group, The Wellingtons, worked for Disney often. He recorded the Scarecrow theme as well as the Wonderful World of Color theme song.

This was so cool for me to see someone I know had worked on such a classic!

^Cool story! I loved Scarecrow from the first time I saw it as a kid back in the 80s. I even went as Scarecrow for Halloween once. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it to see it again when I heard it was going to be a part of the Treasures line. I think it is one of Disney's best live action productions from the 60s.

I always thought Scarecrow would make an interesting remake, give it the same style as Pirates of the Caribbean.

So are you saying that the WDT should be a Christmas bought for you by you? That you should just get that yourself only?

Yeah, you can argue that it's Disney, they're the Treasures, that they quickly sell out and we should know better, but I'm still annoyed.

Of course it's totally up to Buena Vista on how they market this stuff, and maybe one person doesn't make a difference here but they may have missed out on a few sales to people like me.

I don't give a flying F that these are limited runs and come in fancy tins, and are thus more "special" than a more general Disney release, I just want the material on the disc that I grew up with. And until this point I've always been willing to shell out the bucks for the official versions for my Disney movies.

My life has been hectic lately, and I don't always have the time to keep up with what's being released when, and I especially don't always have the extra money or the priority to buy my DVD's, not even the more mainstream releases like 101 Dalmatians or The Aristocats.

At the very least I wish these Treasures sets could have a longer run of availability simply so I could choose what to buy at my leisure, as I've been able to with the more general releases.

So are you saying that the WDT should be a Christmas bought for you by you? That you should just get that yourself only?

What Bill is saying is that if you really really want it, you'd get it for yourself instead of expecting or hoping someone else (who may not know how rare/valuable it is) to give it to you.

And it's not necessarily a Christmas gift. It can just be a DVD you want to buy...so you go and buy it.

As for getting / not getting these DVD's, If it were an isolated type release such as a stannd alone movie I would say get what you like. But these sets are part of a series so get them anyway. You may not enjoy a particular titlle but maybe someone else in your family will.

I've finally managed to finish working through Chronological Donald 4. I must say it is splendid not only to see one of my favourite moments in Disney shorts presented in a nice clean digital remaster, but also that it has got through intact without being vaulted or cut to keep the soccer moms happy.



Thank goodness for the differences between US and UK English, eh?
