I know this has been asked before in previous threads, but I haven't read anything new about this lately. I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything new about Alice in Wonderland joining the PE line and Aladdin being bumped out of it?

Here's some information I've picked up (and translated) from one of Disney's official Nordic press sites. The term "Platinum Edition" is not used in my country, but the release strategy has been the same so far. The interesting thing is that the Platinum line now seems to include 15 titles. As expected, Aladdin has been removed. Alice in Wonderland and Fantasia 2000 have been added:
<b>"Release Strategy</b>
15 of Disney's most popular Classics have a specific strategy based on that they will be vaulted after some time on the market. The films can be off the market for five to ten years, and when re-released will be available for a limited time. The aim is to once again be able to present films for a whole new generation of families with children. The strategy also makes it possible to progressively update the quality of movies and even present them in new formats. The movie Sleeping Beauty, for example, is the first of the 15 film gems to be released on both DVD and Blu-ray."

I present this thread which is somewhat old and has news of Alice and the Platinum line, merging the two threads might be needed.
http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... d+platinum
If there was any new news then it would have been released or brought up here in the forum, or in the thread I've posted. Any news of Alice joining the PE line should be found in the link above. Even though it's old I doubt there's anything more recent.

I think because the 2004 Platinum Edition didn't sale too well so that could be a possibility.Goliath wrote:Why would they bump Aladdin? It was extremely succesful and it's one of the most popular films. I think it's sad none of the 1967-1989 and post-1994 films have made the PE-line.

Here is my projected release dates for the upcoming PE releases, let me know what you think.
Even though Aladdin seems to have been bumped from the PE line, I still think it'll get a new DVD/Blu-ray release around 2011 or 2012.

There's absolutely no way we can predict which films will be released past the Fantasias until Disney says so. In my opinion making any lists like the one above is kind of silly because Disney can decide to vault a title for 11 years(Cinderella) or a few months. We can't even assume it'll still be The Platinum Line past the Fantasias. My hope is that Disney will start a new "line" for it's films.tlc38tlc38 wrote:Here is my projected release dates for the upcoming PE releases, let me know what you think.

I don't recall any definate announcement by Disney that Beauty and the Beast was next. Unless you are assuming that it'll be released after it's 3D treatment, which would make sense i guess but it's not fact yet.Flanger-Hanger wrote:Disney confirmed BatB after Fantasia. Anyway, yes they haven't been confirmed but that list is quite logical and what I was thinking as well (well, Lion king and Alice switched) and I wouldn't be surprised if the final line ended up like that.
All in all the point i'm getting at is that there's no way we can predict what the line will look like that far into the future. I don't understand why it's a logical assumption when disney hasn't kept a persistant release schedule...ever. The Platinum line has changed itself so many times since originally announced as far as order of release and added titles. Alice is an example of that if it's ever a PE at all.
This is just my kind of built up frustration ever since people started assuming we're getting Alice as a PE after someone suggested it might happen a while ago when there's no other likely proof of it other than the Tim Burton version being created. Same goes for Aladdin's possible expulsion. People started assuming this to be true after the recent release in the UK. Alice's new edition could just be a big special edition for all we know. The Masterpiece edition is better than most Platinums so who can say that couldn't be true either.
I don't really think the Platinum line is still going to be the platinum line for long anyway. Ever since disney started releasing films for us to buy they havn't kept a collection going for this long. That of all things, I believe, can be a safer assumption.

You didn't seem to come off badly at all. You were simply pointing out facts about Disney. We all know they stick with one certain thing for a few years, then drop it. It's no secret (lol). I was just basing this projected schedule of the PE line on past releases. I myself don't really think that Alice is being added to the PE line and that Aladdin has been bumped out. I think it's just speculation that's going to turn out to be wrong. I DO think that when Tim Burton's Alice comes out we'll get a new "special edition" of Alice on DVD & Blu-ray but I don't think it'll be in the PE line.singerguy04 wrote:Thank you for pointing that out to, and sorry if i was coming off badly. No offence but Anders has posted a definitive statement from Disney above. Not only does it show Beauty and the Beast's release but it also shows no Aladdin and Alice in the group.singerguy04 wrote:I don't recall any definate announcement by Disney that Beauty and the Beast was next. Just because its not a United States sourced sourced doesn't make it any less accurate or true. Various non-US sites have confirmed the Alice issue and the dropping of Aladdin. Official Disney sites do not SPECULATE about future releases or release patterns. While I admit plans my change, Anders' post clearly shows the release schedule for the Platinum range as it is today, and is more than likely to stay over the next few years (certainly I would imagine until the time Alice is released as a Platinum).
The release of the Musical Masterpiece edition in PAL territories says everything about Aladdin's fate. Look at all the discs Disney could have treated to a Musical Masterpeice in its place. Even if they were going to eat into the Platinum titles, it would make more sense to release either Beauty and the Beast (an OOP and unavailable title) or The Little Mermaid (to cross promote the Little Mermaid III release). As it was, they released Aladdin which was technically OOP, but easily available (for a low price) from many stores over here.
For people waiting for an official press release, Disney US will NEVER officially announce Aladdin has been dropped from the Platinum line. Why would they draw attention to the fact a film is being 'demoted' and thus, imply it is of a poorer quality?
As for Alice, why announce it now? Its still years off and as Patrick says, it makes more sence to begin promotion when promotion of Burton's film begins, and to release it when Burton's Alice is in cinemas and/or released on Home Video.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

you must've missed the part where I realized I was wrong about there not being an official announcement verifying the new BatB PE.
Once again I'm not saying there will or will not be a Alice PE. All I'm saying is that there is no definate proof of it. A tenative release schedule is not proof, if it were then why not just release a official announcement for the next 10 years? I also can't believe that a single release in one part of the world is absolute proof of a films downgrade across the world. Couldn't it be possible that Aladdin just won't be a Platinum there? I mean the platinum weren't even called platinums until recently, unless I'm wrong.
Sheesh, just because I'm proposing an idea different than your own doesn't make me wrong. But just to throw it out there, it doesn't mean I think I'm 100% right myself.

No. All Platinums are the same world-wide. True, in the UK they only started calling them Platinums starting with The Jungle Book, but that's only a name. The 2-Disc Special Editions were as much a Platinum as their US counterparts.singie wrote:Couldn't it be possible that Aladdin just won't be a Platinum there? That's not exactly true. For instance, here in The Netherlands, what you call 'Platinums' are mostly called 'Special editions' or 'Deluxe Editions'. And Alice in Wonderland and Pocahontas were 'Special Editions' in the US, but only one-disc over here.Julian Carter wrote:No. All Platinums are the same world-wide. the whole name thing is my point though. couldn't it be possible that if we get the PE Aladdin release the UK could just get a SE? Futhermore, couldn't it be possible that the US would get a Special Edition Alice release while the rest of the world gets a Platinum. Who knows really!
Overall the Platinum line doesn't mean much anymore. I'd rather disney just create a new collection and move on.
