Is Disney Done with DVD? (The Never Ending Blu-Ray Debate)

Yeah the smaller LCD TVs are bad. With true 16:9 monitors coming out I would buy one of those before I got a small LCD TV.

I laugh when even ppl from like "BEST BUY" are labeled "PRO", They don't know more than the average techie. HOWEVER, the last time I was at BEST BUY I was impressed with the employee there, but a lot of times I feel like I have to teach the person who is supposed to HELP ME!

I've been that way for a long time. The lack of knowledge that the "Geek Squad", etc... has is amazing. Of course they are just working retail, and you can't expect a true expert in the field to still be at Best Buy. Some of the information I hear them give customers is just to get them to buy more stuff they don't need. The only time I deal with them anymore is if I need them to get a item for me, so I can purchase it.

Yeah, I have a 19" widescreen LCD monitor and it looks better than HDTV of that size I've ever seen.
But the ratio is 1.6:1 (16:10), not 16:9. Are they making actual 16:9? Because it seems like most of the widescreen monitors I've seen are 1.6:1.

And while larger plasma/LCD TVs look good, walk up close to one and it still looks kinda fuzzy.

Virtually all new TVs sold are HDTVs and most are in 1080p.

There have been a few references to 1080p being the true hd resolution, but isn't it true that the difference between 720 and 1080 is undetectable on a tv under a certain size...say around 40 inches?

I hear its not exactly worth it for anything lower than 40, but I wouldnt say imperceptible. not only do you get high res but higher frames per second. I saw kung fu panda running on a 1080 p 30 something inch and it was surprisingly smooth compared to 720p stuff Ive seen.

1080 is the more future proof resolution, and yea, its mainly noticeable with sets above 50 inches. but 720p is still quite good for around 40. it gets more iffy around 50.

On a somewhat unreated note, I'll should have my 50 inch Samsung plasma delivered tomorrow, so Im really excited about that. this will be my first HD set. Ive been set to go HD for about a year now, I have all the pixar blu rays, a ps3, digital cable, component and HDMI cables. everything I need but the tv itself.

Ive been testing my ps3 and digital cable box to watch a handful of blu rays and and tv shows on my pc monitor i (a 24 inch lcd) through hdm but its black levels leave something to be desiered. should look a lot better on a plasma in that regard.

Why is everyone arguing over this? DVDs are still available. If you want DVDs, buy them! Blu-Rays are available. If you want them, buy them! It's not that hard to grasp. I prefer Blu-Ray, some people prefer DVDs. No one is forcing anyone to do anything. Don't worry about the "switch" so soon if you don't want to. The same thing will happen with DVDs that happened to VHS. One day, you'll have a Blu-Ray player sitting in your living room watching a movie and say, "I wonder what the next format will be"....admit it, that's exactly what you said when DVDs came out. And, rest assured their will be a new format after Blu-Ray. Everything changes, it's a fact and cannot be denied.

The real question for this thread should be "why is Disney re-releasing Oliver & Company and Mary Poppins on DVD and NOT on Blu-Ray".

Disney isn't going to stop releasing DVDs anytime in the near future. DVDs still bring in money, and let's face it....that's what Disney is hungry for. As long as the market is there, they'll make them.

I think DVD's and Blu-ray will co-exist like SACD and CD's do. Disney isn't going to stop making DVDs and I don't expect them to. I don't even want them to. Unlike many here, I'm not discarding DVDs like they're yesterday's news. They're here and they aren't going anywhere. DVD going to Blu-ray isn't even close to us going from VHS to DVD. My Disney DVDs are great (I have the special editions/Platinum editions) and I'm still working on building my DVD collection. DVD's aren't obsolete or subpar.

I have a Blu-ray player (actually, it's a Playstation 3) and I am just now slowly starting to build my collection (Yes, I am double dipping some of my DVDs). The main thing that annoys me about blu-ray is the price. Yes, I know the picture quality is much better, but do we really need to pay $30 for it?

I am not sure if the DVD is reaching the end of it's life since there are people who cannot afford Blu-Ray Players or HDTVS.

I actually bought a HD-DVD addon for my Xbox 360 for $40 including shipping (yay, eBay?)... and I ordered a bunch of HD-DVD movies for under $10.

I know it's a dead format, but there were still hundreds of movies released on HD-DVD, and it's identical to Blu-Ray (Stupid Sony and making people think it's better!)... they're both 1080p, so what's the big deal? This way I can have all the OLD movies and not go broke

And I was checking some movies like Transformers... the features are literally identical, they just replaced HD-DVD online with Blu-Ray Live or whatever it's called.

*sigh* how about more space for storing info, better audio and better picture (both my be 1080p but there are definitely benefits for blu in the picture department, why do yo think so many people complain over the cheap porting of HD-DVD picture over to blu-ray discs?) not to mention more company support and it's not dead like HD-DVD.

The reason more studios support it is because Sony's paying them to. For the longest time, Warner Bros and others were HD-DVD exclusive.

And to quote a friend: Codec-wise, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are identical. Both use AVC compression... any myths about Blu-Ray looking better are rigged setups. (Like, notice how DVDs look a lot better than Best Buy demos make them look in their snazzy HDTV demos? They do that INTENTIONALLY to get you to buy their crap)
And HD-DVD, like Blu-Ray, uses a blue laser.

Sigh, I hate mass media. It blew Blu-Ray WAY out of proportion, just as it's doing the DTV transition currently.

Yeah - at some of my local second hand movie retailers, flawless HD DVDs are cheaper than some DVDs because the format is dead.

If I had an HD DVD player, I'd be making out like a bandit.

I just eagerly await the day DVDs fill the shelves of thrift stores like VHSs do now.

There's hundreds of VHSs at my local Goodwill for $1.00 to $2.00. Sometimes, for movies I'm just interested in checking out, it's cheaper than rental and there's more selection than the library.

I'm hoping DVDs come to be in that situation sometime in the next decade.

THANK GOD SONY "PAID OFF THE STUDIOS" because I really wanted Blu to win...IF for nothing it was BLUE and not RED (the color I CANNOT stand!) HAHA

There are tons of people selling them for under $50... so there's really no going wrong there.

And hey, as far as "dead formats" go, they're still perfectly valid formats. There are quite a few Disney laserdiscs which can outdo some of the skimpy/bad DVDs that have been released

And yeah, I do point out that HDTVs are scams... I'm not saying I'm 100% against owning one, I'm just saying that I wish people would stop thinking of high definition and Blu-Ray as being the one true source for high quality entertainment when you can in fact do just as well by other means.
