Which unfortunately included some material that I'd have killed to have seen in the Platinum (especially since we got shafted when it came to "Backstage Disney"). While I can easily get the 1924 silent film from Kino Video, I don't know where else Disney could re-release "Nine Old Men & the Art of Animation" on another DVD (perhaps the Alice in Wonderland PE?).goofystitch wrote:Peter Pan was released as a 3-disc set in some countries, but in the US, it was released as a 1 disc Special Edition. The set included both films (Peter Pan and Return to Neverland) and a third disc of bonus material.
While I disagree that it's horrendous (it's just not as exciting as the single-disc cover art), it is the same cover art as the UK release:Widdi wrote:Cover-art has been posted and it's horrendous.

I kinda wish Disney would have made new cover art instead, but like you, I don't care cause I still want it. And honestly, I'm not gonna be looking at the cover art, I'll be too busy spinning the discs!

The reason the advertisement featured above highlights the slipcover is because its for retailers, not consumers. Its letting the retailer know that foil embossed (meaning super shiny) slipcover is sure to catch the eye of consumers and gives the retailer assurance that this won't just take up shelf space before heading to a $5 bin.

I can't understand why this 2-disc hasn't been released in the US before. I mean, if we in Europe get it, why can't the US --the 'home' of Disney? It's like the single-disc region 1 Tarzan, of which we got the 2-disc version. But then again, we never got a 2-disc Pocahontas or Alice in Wonderland. The Disney Company doesn't make any sense to me.
At least Americans will finally be able to enjoy all the bonus features. You're in for a treat! The 'Making of' for Lilo & Stitch is the most elaborate I know.

BlueRay isn't gaining any momentum. At least not anywhere outside this forum. Last time I read an article about BlueRay, it said only 8% of all people have a BlueRay player. Nobody is forcing you to 'triple dip'. If you don't want to, don't. But it's getting annoying that everybody on this forum assumes that a 100% of the consumers are 'upgrading' to BlueRay, because they're not and they probably will not.Disneykid wrote:There's a really dirty name I want to call Disney at the moment. They release this right when Blu-ray is gaining momentum. I'm not about to triple dip on this film (the first DVD, this new 2-disc set, and the inevitable BD), no matter how much I love it. I really hope there's a concurrent BD release, but at this point, I doubt it, and that ticks me off. This is the release we should've gotten years ago.

Not gaining any momentum? It just had it's first 1,000,000+ release, and it sold those million copies in one week. All it took was one week for The Dark Knight to outsell every other Blu-ray release ever.
But the format's not gaining momentum.
It will be years before it's as big as DVD, but when you follow the sales track of BD and compare it to DVD's first two and a half years, it's pretty much the exact same level of sales, awareness, etc. It may not overtake DVD for quite some time, but this format will not be going quietly into the night.
Cheers,
JM

You're talking about the people who *already own* a BlueRay player. *They* are the million people who bought the Dark Knight DVD, and they did it because it was an incredible popular movie. But that does not in any way mean the *format* is gaining momentum.Just Myself wrote:Not gaining any momentum? It just had it's first 1,000,000+ release, and it sold those million copies in one week. Darl Knight sold a million week one on blu ray but sold 11.8 million on dvd (less than 10%). It is gaining ground but the biggest movie ever still sold about 8% of the copies. For those who've gone blu ray I hope you get it too but the main thing to me is to get it on dvd.

Well the home page does say to expect another announcement in about a month... I think Hercules and Black Cauldron are very likely candidates ! Finally !akhenaten wrote:just as i observed a few months back..a local r3 videostore is finishing their storck by selling r1 lilo n stich, hercules limited issue and the black cauldron GC for very low price..could this mean the latter two are going through a transformation as well?
I really do hope they start releasing these on Bluray though... Otherwise, all of us Bluray owners will have to wait another endless amount of time to get these titles in Bluray.
Lilo & Stitch is a new enough title, it should be no problem whatsoever prepping it for Bluray... And Hercules/Black Cauldron needed a restoration anyway... I don't see why they would restore it to SD and not just get it over with in HD.

"According to Home Media Magazine, consumers spent over $60M on Blu-ray titles last week, representing 14% of the home media market. The 167% spike is due in large part to the Blu-ray release of 'The Dark Knight', which is breaking Blu-ray sales records around the world. Comparatively, the previous week, where 'Wanted' was the hot new release, consumers spent $23.64M on Blu-ray.
On the year in whole, consumers have spent nearly $500M on Blu-ray titles, and the average spent per week has been growing as adoption continues to rise."

And at this point, I believe anytime Disney does a restoration now, they do them to High Definition standards. So if they are restoring Hercules, I am expecting it to be done with HD in mind. However, I don't expect them to treat The Black Cauldron with the same amount of respect (even though I wish they would). If a re-issue of that film is in the works, I'm expecting it to be the same print from the GC version, only this time in anamorphic widescreen. It would be wonderful if they could provide a worthwhile bonus feature, but the most I'm counting on is a new game. At any rate, I would probably upgrade that one just to have the anamorphic transfer.
I don't think it's that easy to just stick the same content from DVD on a Blu-Ray and maintain the level of quality that Disney gives us with their Blu-Ray releases. Yes, the original source of the film for Lilo & Stitch could be taken and placed in HD without much of a problem. However, Disney is committed to providing HD bonus features and when the original 2-disc set was made, I doubt the bonuses were filmed in HD with that technology in mind. So the compromise would be either a single disc release with the HD film and standard definition bonus features or a 2-disc set with the first disc being a Blu-Ray disc and the second disc being a DVD with all the bonus features on it, which some studios have done for their Blu-Ray releases. Personally, I'd rather wait and get the best HD edition possible.Lilo & Stitch is a new enough title, it should be no problem whatsoever prepping it for Bluray.

Don't be too sure. The bonus features for Atlantis were shot in HD with a widescreen aspect ratio, same thing goes for the Platinum release for Beauty and the Beast and other Disney titles.
As for Disney having difficulty with SD content on an HD disc -- its not an issue. It's just an SD file. It's not like a BR disc can only play one or the other. Disney can inlcude both SD content and HD content on the same BRD if they want to.

By the way, I fully expect Disney to go through one more round of DVD recycling of the following titles before we start seeing them on BRD...
The Black Cauldron (in anamorphic, finally)
The Rescuers Down Under (straight digital transfer, finally)
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (digital transfer, finally)
Hercules (digital transfer, finally)
I wouldn't be too surprised to see the package films re-released again, either.
I will say this about the LILO AND STITCH disc packaging...it sure as hell looks a lot like the Blu-Ray designs used for Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio. In fact, one could call it a Blu-Ray design.
Blu-Ray announcement pending?
Things that make you go, "Hmm."

ABOUT FRIKKEN TIME! It only took 6 years sheesh! Anyhoo, you think Disney is REALLY doing this? I mean look what happend to the supposed 2-Disc of The Aristocats? My hopes are super high...so Disney...you better not let them fall down! Can't say I like the cover art too much, but ah well, can't complain since this is a 2-discer, with more special features
OH YEAH! I also cannot believe it's called Big Wave Edition....Hell to the No... I thought that was the worst made up goofy edition name since the Friendship edition (In which, none of the Pooh characters even get along THAT much...makes me wonder why they named it that...???) Anyways kudos to the Danfrandes guy that spilled the beans on this edition title! But that makes me wonder...is he really a Disney DVD person? Or does another DVD rep come down here and give the head honchos some ideas for gnarly edition names? Very Curios...
