Happy Birthday, Mickey!

Post by Fflewduur »

It was 80 years ago today that Steamboat Willie premiered.

I think the first time I ever saw Steamboat Willie was at the Main Street Cinema at the Magic Kingdom, age 5. Most of my early exposure to the Mouse came through Mousketoon time on daily afternoon reruns of the original Mickey Mouse Club; it was years before I knew The Band Concert was in Technicolor.

Many happy returns of the day.

The BBC's mention includes a nice little audio clip featuring Walt offhandedly doing Mickey's voice.

My mom took me to the local theater to see some special showing of Mickey's 50th birthday. I was still a toddler so I don't remember it, but the story is that they had some lady dressed in a cheesy Mickey costume and I was fascinated. When it was time to go watch the cartoons, I started screaming. I wanted to be with Mickey, not just watch him on the screen!

Wow, and today he's 80. Too bad they don't have special showings for such occasions like that anymore, it'd be fun!

Here's a picture I drew today honoring the occasion:

Image

Minnie is saying: "There was that time in 1936 when the Balif came to our door and nickels were called New Hey Pennies and talkin' streetcars became popular..."

Donald is saying: "Ha! I'm still 74, ya poor excuse for a corporate icon! *coughs*"

Happy birthday, Mickey! It was 80 years ago today! My, how time flies...

And that picture you drew was pretty neat, except you should've featured Donald with some sideburns, kinda like Ludwig Von Drake or Scrooge McDuck. And it would've been neat to see how Goofy and Pluto looked here, too.

I was going to draw Pluto's skeletal remains but I thought that was kind of morbid. I actually tried not to make Donald look like Scrooge, I still wanted him to be Donald.

I Goofy were to be in it I would have him say "I guess I 'aint the only senile one now ah-huck!"

But you know, you could make him look somewhat like how he did in "Sea Salts" at the beginning and end of the cartoon.

Wow 80! I remember being in Disneyland for Mickey's 60th back in 88. It was my second trip to Disneyland and I was 9. I got to see Splash Mountain under construction!

Happy birthday, Mickey!!!

I put these up on YouTube this week which is Mickey's 80th birthday week. There was one song which is probably my favorite song of all is "Mickey" by Toni Basil. I have the original 45 in my hand, but this song kicks butt!!! I played that song over and over again to make me think that Mickey is my favorite character of all time. If you've seen it, here it is!

I put a video response to that video which was played on my GE Wildcat record player, they got Mickey's everywhere in this vid. Here it is.

This is to all of you fans for this awesome birthday!!!!

I can't figure out what Disney is up to these days. The biggest animated star ever across the world and Disney does nothing to celebrate this. I was shocked that Disney was only represented in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade by Miley Cyrus, Bolt, and Buzz Lightyear. Seriously, a Buzz Lightyear balloon? Aren't they off by about 10 years for a balloon for the parade? I know the latest TS-movie is coming up, but come on, a Mickey Mouse balloon and float should have been in the parade. Part of me believes that he was left out b/c Disney wanted to celebrate his birthday in their own parade, which is okay, but stupid in the end. I hate that the new Disney doesn't celebrate/acknowledge the history of their company, and that in the end it all started w/a mouse.
I find you pompous, judgemental, and completely self-absorbed.........would you be my friend?

I was at the Macy's parade when I saw it in person, the Jonas Bros. are there, and so does Miley Cyrus. I filmed parts of that event from my camcorder. I saw Buzz Lightyear and Bolt floats. We had a blast.
