Problem with Dr. Syn?

Post by Freak4ad »

Hi everyone. Big collector of Disney DVDs here, but I bought Dr. Syn and I was watching the episodic version. In episode 3, there is a very clunky repeat scene of the American that is in episode 1. I was very confused at first regarding the scene because it made no sense. It was almost like a jump cut or continuity error. I think it is a mistake, but I could be wrong. Maybe the original replayed that scene to remind people of the American's situation. Any ideas about this? Was the original like that?

I noticed the same thing. Maybe someone could shed some light on this.

It's addressed in the UltimateDisney.com Review...

Whether this production was more intended to be experienced as a film or TV series seems somewhat in question. In a featurette comment, star Patrick McGoohan says they were simply making a movie and weren't even aware it would be going on TV. Obviously, you get more in watching the three consecutive episodes, but in film, more isn't always better, a fact that the growing number of inferior extended edition DVDs supports. At the same time, there is no missing the episodic nature of the film. Though the first (and weakest) episode is mostly dropped, you're still getting separate narratives with characters who only claim a limited window of screentime. On the other hand, the "Wonderful World of Color" presentation takes the unusual step of repeating a segment from Part 1 in Part 3, that which introduces Simon Bates, the American charged with sedition.

Thanks so much for reminding us of that! I read the review but when you kick back for like 2 and a half hours watching something you tend to forget little details like that.

I'd also just like to say: What a GREAT show! I really, really enjoyed this. I never saw this before and I thought that it was really good. It would have been great if they made more episodes or movies with this character.

You have it. This was broadcast in three parts and the scene existed to remind the viewer about what had happened in the first part. I've always wondered why it was so clumsily done, though. It was just popped in there.

Your sentiments on watching Dr. Syn are exactly how I felt about El Fego Baca.... I had never even heard of this Disney series until that Disney Treasure wave was announced. I watched the episodes and REALLY enjoyed them!!

Please, Disney, let us have the rest of the installments of El Fego Baca and Swamp Fox, too!

It warms my heart to hear of a new generation of fans getting turned on to the Scarecrow with this release! It just goes to show that quality storytelling/filmmaking never goes out of style....

Also, I have to agree about Elfego Baca, another great show. I would also like to see the rest of those episodes released. Why doesn't Disney make shows like these anymore? Heck with todays effects they could do some great period adventures. If they had these kind of shows on, I'd watch the Disney channel.

On a side note, I know they are planning on turning the Disney Toon channel into Disney XD, but they really should be turning it into the Disney Adventure Channel.
