Our Oscars 2003 - OFFICIAL NOMINATION THREAD (at last)!

Post by Jake Lipson »

Well...drum roll please...I finally got up off my butt and worked with Jack and jambo*rafiki to get Our Oscars 2003 underway.

The proceedure is fairly simple: Reply to this message with your top picks in each category (up to five per category per person.) I and my partners in crime (heh) will count the number of nods given to each movie, and the top five will then go on to the next round.

This is the official nomination thread. Noms posted in any thread except this official thread will be void and will not be counted. To make it easier on myself and the others, I have decided that noms will ONLY be valid if posted in that thread. I will NOT take nominations in any other form, such as PM, IM or email. This is just the nomination round. When voting happens, it may or may not be different, but for just nominations, everything MUST be posted in this thread. Thanks for understanding. Also, absolutely no discussion is allowed in this thread. Comments on why the movie was so good, or what you liked/disliked about it, should not be posted here, for my ease when counting noms. This thread is for noms only; there will come a time to comment if you wish to. Anyone making comments in their nomination post other than the actulal nominations will not be allowed to perticipate in this round and their noms will be disqualified. For a general idea of what I'm looking for you to do in this thread, here's an example.

Copy the text below and then underneath each category write your nominees, like so:
Best Animated Feature
1) Movie Title Here
2) Movie Title Here
3) Movie Title Here
4) Movie Title Here
5) Movie Title Here
If you do this (see below) you will be disqualified:
Best Animated Feature
1) Movie Title Here because it was great and I loved the songs, blah blah blah, etc. etc....
Get it?

(Psst. Your line is "Got it.")

Good.

Nominations will run through Sunday, March 13th. Since we won't be tallying them until after that date, you can edit and/or change your nominations until but not including Monday, March 14th. After that, if anyone edits their nominations, their nominations will be void.

Any questions, feel free to PM, IM, or email me. Thanks.

Special notes: For our purposes, as the founder of Our Oscars, I am considerign Pirates of the Caribbean an ORIGINAL screenplay as opposed to an adapted one. Even though the movie does contain numerous refrences to the ride, since the ride had no real story, the writers had to come up with their own original storyline and concept. Thus the basis of my considering it original.

Also - unless anyone has objections to it, I'd like to allow Sarah and Emma Boldger to be ONE entry in the Best Actress race. Their performances in In America were so brilliant in part because, as sisters, they had incredible chemestry, and it would be impossible for me to single out just one of them as having done a better job than the other. They really had a genuine enthusiasm for the movie and brought a lot to it because they were able to play off each other so well. Again, if anyone has any objections to this, I'll split them, but if not, then it shall stand.

So without further ado...here are the categories for Our Oscars 2003!

ANNOUNCEMENT: As one of Jake's 'partners in crime', I feel it my duty to inform you that POTC is being considered an adventure movie, NOT a comedy. That is all.
P.S. I'll probably post my noms tomorrow.

3) Beyond the Sea - Finding Nemo
As one of the people running this show, I have to step in here and inform another person running this show of an error.

As great of a song as it is in Finding Nemo, Beyond the Sea is actulally a re-recording of a Bobby Darin oldie. Thus, it doesn't count as an original song any more than, say, Circle of Life would count as an original song from The Lion King 1.5.

Actulally, I think the new recording wasn't even made FOR Finding Nemo. If I remember correctly, Robbie Williams recorded it for a 2001 CD of his and Disney/Pixar comissioned hiim to allow them to use it in the movie.

Easy mistake to make, especially if you've never heard the original oldie, but, yup, it's not original. Sorry. You may, naturally, replace or edit your nominations to substitute something else in for it if you wish.

I had originally announced that nominations would end this weekend. However, I had also originally intended to bump this thread up on Friday to give everyone one last chance to check in with your votes for this year.

Since I forgot to do that, I will now extend voting through Wednesday, March 17th. However, that wll the final date for voting to count. No exceptions!

But seriously people. Only five out of a 200+ forum membership have bohered to vote, and three of them were involved with making the "show" happen. We need lots more votes if this is going to end up being worth it! Why such a small turnout? Listing your favorite movies of the year isn't exactly rocket science. In an effort to boost voting for the next few days, Luke has kindly made this thread sticky. If we don't get enough votes, though, I'm not sure if it'll be worth going forward with the next round.

So...those who have not yet voted, PLEASE vote soon! Those who have, edit or finalize yours as you see fit, and we'll soon see which movies make it to the next round!

Well, I've decided that with 5 voters, it's really not worth the trouble to do round 2. Sorry to anyone who was looking forward to it. Maybe we'll try this next year. Hopefully it will get a bigger reception then.
