lol, quite right you are. Those two combined profited over a billion $ worldwide! Add to that these approximate global profits:
Freaky Friday ($115 million profit)
Bringing Down The House ($104 million profit)
Jungle Book 2 ($96 million profit)
Calendar Girls ($74 million profit)
Holes ($27.5 million profit)
The Lizzie McGuire Movie ($22 million profit)
Open Range ($16 million profit)
Shanghai Nights ($13 million profit)
*Note, Disney also released: The Haunted Mansion, Brother Bear, Under The Tuscan Sun, Piglet's Big Movie, Cold Creek Manner, Ghosts of the Abyss, and The Young Black Stallion, but I don't have numbers for these.
Then add to that the home video sales & rentals profits in 2003 (which were huge, as I understand), merchandising (don't know how that went), and the tremendous success for Dimension and Miramax in 2003. Despite some of their lackluster results (HM, BB, non-ESPN TV), they still had a very good year in '03.

You know, I don't think Cars and Narnia will be as competitive in box office as Narnia and Harry Potter. According to WB, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is due out November 2005, a month before Chronicles of Narnia. I think those two will be in a box office battle similar to the battles in 2001 and 2002 with Sorcerer's Stone/Fellowship of the Ring and Chamber of Secrets/Two Towers. I'm positive HP will come out on top, but I'm also pretty sure (or at least hoping) Narnia won't come out far behind. Hopefully it'll make the top 3 for 2005.

Good call, I didn't even think about Goblet of Fire coming out then too. Well, they needn't worry, I'll just even it out for them. GOF, Narnia, GOF, Narnia... back and forth about 20 dozen times
Also, if GOF is split into 2 movies, depending on how it's divided up, that could have the potential of killing other year-end box office hopefuls.

According to the director (Mike Newell), Goblet of Fire will not be split in half because it's absolutely possible to do one and would be kind of embarassing to do two.
Somehow I doubt Narnia and Harry Potter will make the top 3 of 2005. Harry Potter fans will be insulted by GoF's shoddy treatment (JKR herself admitted they'd have to simplify it to make one movie), and considering all of the negativity I'm hearing surrounding PoA, I'm not too sure if the fanbase will be ready to rally behind GoF in undying support.
I think everyone's forgetting one other movie coming out next year. Does the phrase STAR WARS ring a bell? Sure, the first two prequels haven't matched the orignals, but the geeks will come. And seeing as this is the last SW movie ever and chronicles Anakin's fall from grace and becoming Vader, it's a pretty big deal and I'm quite sure it will be HUGE. Granted this is a summer movie and will not be direct competition for HP, Narnia or Cars, but still.

Star Wars comes out in the spring/summer, so it will be dying off in time for the holiday releases. I don't see Harry Potter losing its fan base. If anything, it will only continue to grow. I also don't think it would be an embarassment to have a 2-part movie, I think most fans just expect this due to the very lengthy nature of the book. I would rather see it done that way, than see it bastardized into a 3 hour film, and I think most fans concur. That decision is likely very tentative at this point, in fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see a change in directors. Who knows, though, I guess we'll see how it goes.

No offence Jake, but movies and novels are two different mediums. It's very rare you get novels and films following each other scene for scene. Gone with the Wind for instance is considered one of the greatest movies ever made, but even that is a shallow copy of the novel's contents. As far as I know, none of the Disney animated movies based on existing tales follow the originals to a great extent either.Jake Lipson wrote:Somehow I doubt Narnia and Harry Potter will make the top 3 of 2005. As for simplyfying GoF for the movie - well will it be simplyfying or simply trimming some of the deadwood? Much as I love GoF (it is my favourite of the books) it could have done with a little more editing by the publisher (as could OofP). As long as the central mystery is there, with all the clues and the solution at the end I'm sure it will be an interesting and much more than watchable movie. All that should matter with the GoF movie is it is stands as a coherent and enjoyable movie.
I've not heard any negativity about PoA - all of the media over here are looking forward to it and think it will be the best film yet.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database
Like 2099, I have yet to hear any negativity towards PoA at all. Everything I've heard about it thus far has been wildly positive, many claiming this to put the previous two to shame. Yeah, I forgot about Star Wars, but I still think HP4 will make it into the top 3 for sure, with Narnia (hopefully) in the top 5. To be honest, I think it'd be extremely hard to make GoF into one movie unless it's at least three hours long. JK leaves too many subtle clues and hints all over the place that'd make the story hard to follow if they got cut. OotP, on the other hand, I can see as one movie since that one's mostly made up of character moments that can be expressed on film as brief 2 minute scenes.

I agree, there is some dead weight in GOF that can be cut out, but I think it needs to be LOTR-length, at least, to fit in one movie, and even that is a stretch. Two films would be more appropriate, but I'll withold judgement on their decision until I see it.
I haven't heard any negative POA coverage, either. HP4 will almost def. be in the top 3, and Star Wars will be too far removed to be a factor in its success.

I'm not saying Star Wars will be a threat to HP, Cars, Narnia. I'm just saying I expect it to be in the top 3 of the year, so obviously all three of those can't be.

I think HP and SW definitely will be. Narnia is iffy, and I doubt Cars will make it.
