Non-Disney Movies on The Disney Channel
When the Disney Channel used to be good, it aired a whole variety of programming in order to cover a much more broad audience than simply airing episode after episode of "Suite Life" and "Hannah Montana". People could sit down every evening as a family and watch REAL movies, documentaries, and concert specials. It used to be a real channel. Now it is just "white noise" taking up cable space.
Anyway, I thought I'd try to help others remember when by posting clips/trailers of film and programs that aired on The Disney Channel that were NOT produced by Disney. If you have a favorite, be sure and post as well, or maybe just comment on programs that you miss. My frieds, I give you the Non-Disney that used to be The Disney Channel:

For the record I still think Disney Channel is good.
But then again I never really started watching Disney Channel until a couple years ago (right when Hannah Montana was starting out lol)

But the thing that makes Woody special, is he'll never give up on you... ever. He'll be there for you, no matter what.

The Disney Channel is the worst thing on television right now. I only watch "Phineas and Ferb" and that is because it isn't on any other channel.
I think Disney has gone totally bonkers in making this nothing more than a channel to promote all of the no-talent people they think will be perfect role models for the kids of today.
The only success story is Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana) and even some of her success is questionable.
I think the whole Disney channel is just a big commercial for 'everything and anything Disney' and they have lost their total vision of what the channel used to stand for and support, and that was family viewing.
And commercials - don't get me started - a 30-minute show is barely 20-minutes when you take out the commercials. What ever happened to the shows being longer than the commercials??
Sorry, but I DVR "Phineas and Ferb", so I don't have to subject myself to this drivvle that is the Disney Channel of today. Walt Disney himself would not have let this happen to HIS channel.

That's a rather unusual film for Disney Channel. Isn't there a sex scene in that film?

Re: Non-Disney Movies on The Disney Channel
There are a TON of "grown up" movies that used to air on The Disney Channel. Be they classic films like Bridge on the River Kwai, or The Longest Day to contemporary films like Twins, or Norma Rae, or Jewel of the Nile.toonaspie wrote:That's a rather unusual film for Disney Channel. Disney would, of course, disclaimer film most of their feature films as "viewer discretion advised".
I'm telling you, The Disney Channel, actually had integrity to show content that appealed to adults, kids, families, and teens. They used to program the schedule so that evenings would be family programming, Tuesday nights were kids TV programming, Thursday nights were Teenage programming, and the weekends would mix up Adult programming and family programming with Sunday often having documentaries and concert specials as Sunday night events.
Also usually almost every night (around 9 or 10) The Disney Channel would show movies...REAL movies....under a banner called "Disney Night Time for Adults". Everything from My Fair Lady, Dr. Zhivago, Casablanca, and The Maltese Falcon to The Incredible Shrinking Woman, Jeremiah Johnson, To Sir With Love, Ghostbusters, Let's Make Love, A Hard Day's Night, Iron & Silk, Enemy Mine, and Romancing the Stone.
On top of all this, they would show about 15 to 20 different Disney feature films (be they theatrical releases or old TV movies) every month! Everything from Texas John Slaughter Geronimo's Revenge, and Mr. Boogedy, to The Great Mouse Detective, and Man of the House.
Oh.........those were the days.

Interestingly enough, I bought two of the movies you mentioned on DVD...
No, this really didn't have anything to do with anything, but what do I usually say that does?

Man has a dream
And that's the start
He follows his dream
With mind and heart
And when it becomes a reality
It's a dream come true
For you and me!

They used to run some great pick-ups like "Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella" with Lesley Ann Warren, and all the "Peanuts" specials.

There are so many problems with the Disney Channel its hard where to begin.
Its understandable why they are focused on its tween-tastic shows. It provides high ratings and big profits. If you found a gold mine would you ignore it? Of course not! Even Disney did this way back in the day with the "Mickey Mouse Club" and their featurettes. Its normal.
The problem is that Disney is milking their cow EXTREMELY dry to the point where they are ignoring their other assets, their fanbase and even themselves.
First off, how many times do we need to see the same shows day after day? Wizards has barely started and its already on more than 3 times A DAY! They need to slow down with the marathons, daily showings and special events. I don't know what today's youth think about it but when I was a kid I HATED seeing the same shows over and over, even if I loved them to death. I always wanted to see something new, exciting and unexpected. When they showed the same episodes over and over I would stop watching and do something else.
This isn't a problem exclusive to the Disney Channel. Both Nick and Cartoon Network are guilty of repeating their shows like they were running out of style and I think its hurting them before they even become very popular.
This also happens with their movies. How many times do we need to see "Sharkboy and Lavagirl"? Give it up already!
Second, they need BALANCE. Yes, the tween shows are the most watched. But how about showing movies that appeal to adults? Or, like its been mentioned already, go back to their "themed" lineups? I think everybody wins, even Disney. Fans get to see something other than tween shows, Disney lets the show get a breather and they will have more lasting potential.
Finally, show better movies. Show DACs once more, and not as part of "special events". Don't show them on "Movie time Monday" or "Cheetah Girl's BFF Party". They also need to get better non-Disney movies.
Anyways, now that I'm done ranting, here are some of my favorite non-Disney movies that once aired on the channel:
- Animalympics: A classic and very underrated animated film. Its a parody of the olympics featuring human animals as competitors. It features the talents of Brad Bird (The Incredibles) and the creators of Tron.
- We're Back A Dinosaur Story: I used to worship this movie as a kid. This movie led me to believe that John Goodman has great potential as a voice actor. Seeing it again a few years back, the film is pretty weak. But a pretty good effort.
- An American Tail Fievel Goes West: Am I the ONLY one that thinks this movie is better than the original?
There was a non-Disney animated film funded by the UN. I forget the title of it, but it was about a girl and her grandfather visiting New York and learning about world cultures, and touched everything from foods to individuality, to faith and unity. It has unique animation and great music. Anyone remember the title of this?

I found some great YouTube clips with tons of really good promos from The Disney Channel back before it was "white noise".

I thought this was going to be a post complaining about the fact that they air NON Disney studio movies like Shark Boy and Lame-o Girl(lava girl) or Harry Potter or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Beethoven.
I didn't have Disney personally until 2000 but the times I watched it at my grandma's (the only person who had it when I was growing up since it was a premium channel unless we had a "free preview week") I never saw TWINS or JEWEL OF THE NILE. Maybe they were aired at 2 AM or something?

Disney Channel died when they stopped airing movies with Haley mills (Parent Trap and Pollyanna) and fun adventure movies like Swiss Family Robinson. R.I.P. the REAL Disney Channel. Date of Death: When the shows became teenie bopperish.

I decided to tune in to ABC Family's Countdown to 25 days of Christmas (for Aladdin and Curious George) and I realized something. I think the reason why the Disney Channel turned into tween central is because Disney sees ABC Family as being their family channel.
ABC is owned by Disney, right? Does Disney also own ABC Family? If so, maybe that's why ABC Family feels more like the classic Disney Channel.
So, if you ever wonder how a modern Disney Channel would be like if they didn't went the tween central path, tune into ABC Family.

Yeah, but its the closest thing we will ever get to a modern Disney channel.PeterPanfan wrote:But ABC Family doesn't air that many animated, or classic Disney movies, nor do they the "classic shows."
ABC Family tries to create the same type of programming that the Old Disney channel used to air, before they saw money signs on teeny boppers.
ABC Family premiered THE INCREDIBLES before Disney Channel did. They will be premiering CARS this December, Disney Channel has not aired that yet.
