*whips out elephant gun with tranquilizer dart* shhhhh I'm hunting da fanboys :P

Not sure if your being serious or not, if you are I have this to say:

They can replace Johnny if they choose to, will it work? You have to wait and find out never judge a book by it's cover for all you know it could turn out pretty decent.

Now chant with me now "I do believe it can work I do, I do, I do"
   I am half serious.
1: I am not a boy (NO I am not in love with Johnny Depp).
2: I do believe it can work, I do, I do, I don't I don't, they can't replace Johnny It wont work it, just won't work!!!
If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 10:9. 2 Timothy ch2 v 19, “ Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness”.

I'm sure there's lots of reasons Parts 2 and 3 went staggeringly way over budget - not least the fact that they started filming two films costing hundreds of millions each without finished scripts. Which, let's face it, is just insane. And yet, people here seem to think the same people who allowed this - be they Disney management itself or Verbinski the director or even the writers - are the best choices to carry the "franchise" forward!

Also you're forgetting the current economic climate. Cost savings have to be made in any way possible. Two studios have already turned down Steven Speilberg/Peter Jackson's Tintin film[s]. That's two studios turning away a film by two of cinema's hottest creators, because its too expensive. Universal can't/won't pay for co-production. Paramount want all or nothing (i.e. Speilberg will loose his ownership to the films). There was a time when Universal (who was one of the studios) would have indulged anything from Speilberg just to keep him happy.
That is true, but I doubt Disney would've shelled out that much upfront to keep Depp in (it's a rumor right now, so no telling if it's true or fake) anyway. If I was Depp, I would've asked to see a tentative script for POTC 4 (or at least a complete draft outline) before signing on to do it. (I think Depp knows more about the progress of POTC 4 than the previous screenwriters or Verbinski himself at this point, but who knows..)

But Hollywood is a money-hungry business -- they'll probably do anything to keep the gravy train running. But the Efron idea is just a rumor -- a very bad rumor at that.

It would seem I check Perez Hilton too much, but this time I found something really interesting:

Big Russell Brand news!

The "overreaction" victim may be appearing in the next installment of Pirates of the Caribbean as Johnny Depp's brother.

A source tells the UK's Sun that Russell has been in talks with the Disney people about the role and that the part could mean an $8 million payday for the funny guy.

Take that BBC!

The insider goes on to say:

"There couldn’t be a role more perfectly suited. There’s a lot of Jack Sparrow in his mannerisms and behaviour. Depp’s accent isn’t a million miles away from Russell’s either. Russell joining the Sparrows alongside Johnny and Keith Richards as their dad will complete the ultimate on-screen pirate family.”

We can totally see him in the role!

Good call, Mouse.

But, don't eff this one up, Russ!

I remember someone calling this a while back, I forget who though.
Ichabod I think someone deserves to be member of the week for having psychic powers :D

Just to follow up on that pay settlement comment, I would think Disney would've worked in a sequel clause for a fifth film if the gravy train is still strong for POTC 4.

Sony secured Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi for two more installments of the Spider-Man franchise (Maguire's reportedly getting a $50 million check, in royalties and payments that cover both S-M 4 and S-M 5). If Disney was smart enough, they'd have Depp sign on for two more movies as a precaution as opposed to one.

And there's another interview with Jerry Bruckheimer regarding the progress of POTC 4, NT 3 and The Lone Ranger: http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=50225

Nowhere does Bruckheimer say that Efron is involved or anything of that sort. So let's abandon this silly rumor once and for all.
