Three Broadway Shows to Close

Post by PeterPanfan »

Yup.

Say goodbye to:

Xanadu - Closing September 28

[title of show] - Closing October 12

Legally Blonde: The Musical - Closing October 19

I am deeply saddened by all of these closings, though especially by Legally Blonde and [title of show.] I'm VERY fortunate I got to see Legally Blonde last month, and encourage everyone to see it if they get the chance.

Wow, two of the shows have only been on broadway for a year. That's kind of surprising.

Bad economic times.

"Legally Blonde" I knew was going for a long time. I called it back circa the reality show. That was sign of desperation.

And I love [title of show], but no one really expected it to last long. It should have had a smaller venue, like Circle in the Square, or somewhere Off-Broadway.

Dag. I saw Legally Blonde: The Musical on MTV last year, and just last month bought the movie on DVD and fell in love with it, and if I was ever able to get to New York, I was going to go check this and TLM out, but... I guess it's just TLM...

Well, thanks for sharing. I need a salon! :(

Xanadu was loads of fun and a camp hoot but I didn't think it would have a long run. A year is good. Cheyenne Jackson was yummy!

Three Broadway Shows Closing 2008

Post by Disney Duster »

Noooo! Okay please someone help me out.

Is Xanadu closing this September 28, 2008, or next September 28, 2009?

Because just last night my friend Kyle and I watched the original 80's movie Xanadu! We're just friends and both gay, duh, we wanted to watch Xanadu! He had heard the movie's Olivia Newton-John music and loved it and downloaded it and I told him it was a Broadway show so he got interested and then he bought the movie like last week and we watched it this weekend and it really wasn't a bad movie just not a great one but it was great fun, with really good music and cool special effects. It even had this beautiful Don Bluth animation I loved!

And he actually got a ticket 20% off to see the Broadway show, it came with the movie DVD, so it was only $80 to pay to see the show, I guess, and I was like let's go see it in June on my birthday and he was like yeah let's!

But now...!!!!!!

I don't get it I thought Xanadu was a smash hit so close to winning Best Musical!

It wasn't that big of a hit. It has a limited fan base, mostly older gays, and attracts only a small crowd of average tourists. Also, it was only nominated for Best Musical, and it was a very slow year. I mean, "Cry Baby" got nominated, for crying out loud. I think that says something about the past season.

Well maybe producers on Broadway will realize that just because a film is popular doesn't mean it should be made into a Broadway musical.

I project similar things to happen to "Shrek the Musical and Spider-Man the Musical"! Serves them right. Turning films that were not musicals into Broadway musicals is a very bad idea. The popularity of the Shrek and Spider-Man franchises have waned considerably also. Should be interesting.

BROADWAY, COME UP WITH SOMETHING NEW!!!!
(yes, I'm shouting, maybe they will wake up and be creative!!!)

At least they have revivals of West Side Story and Guys and Dolls coming.

I'm sad to see Legally Blonde go.

Anyway, the problem is not the fact that producers are turning movies into musicals. Since when was there anything original on Broadway? Some of the greatest musicals were based on autobiographies, existing plays, classic novels, films, and even Shakespeare.

Actually, you can make it 4 shows closing now.

Hairspray will be coming to a close. Sad.

WHAT?! I'd heard about Spring Awakening but I had no idea Ave. Q was closing! NOO!!

Jeez, what a horrible time for Broadway!

I guess I'm for sure gonna have to go see Ave Q. when it comes my way next month, along with Legally Blonde in March. :(

Wow, I've really been out of the loop. I can't say I'm surprised to hear about Xanadu, while it may have been fun, it didn't really seem to be destined with having a lot of staying power. Hairspray, and Ave Q, those really surprise me though. Lets hope that for all these shows that are closing, we get at least a couple really great ones. Sadly, I haven't really fallen in love with any musical over the past couple years, so I'm hoping for the best.
