Mary Poppins - 45th anniversary edition (*groans*)
Of all the films in desperate need of a re-release, why this again when it already has a 2 disc that still in print!!!!
And it doesn't even look like they're going blu either so it's not like they can even use that as an excuse for a re-release. Just shameless pimping for the broadway musical.
God I hate Disney!

it baffles me why its not announced for blu-ray as well.the film has been restored and almost every material is available on dvd.how many dvd editions of mary poppins do we need? its not the best and most famous film by disney anyway. id rather have an anamorphic happiest millionaire.
can we expect a 10th anniversary of tarzan that adds the short lived broadway clips? and netherland's too?
disney is running like a shuffled playlist.keep on repeating the frequently played tunes.

do you still wait for me Dream Giver?
While I enjoyed the Haunted Mansion Redecoration walkthrough feature on the new Nightmare Before Christmas release, and to a lesser extent the Sleeping Beauty walkthrough on the new Sleeping Beauty (but really, it was a bit pants wasn't it? The attraction that is). I'm a little worried about the latest trend with Disney's re-releases...
They seem to be re-releases simply to add promotional content. Granted, both walkthroughs were entertaining and informative so didn't feel very promotional, but they were. Both made an effort to let you know about the attraction in the parks (or in the castle's case that it was re-opening soon).
And Mary Poppins seems to be re-released just for added promotional musical stuff. Sigh. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't so transparent. Still, hopefully we won't reach the depths of "blatantly promotional" as the Lion King DVD got.
And like Akhenaten, I question why no Blu-ray. Surely the last restoration resulted in a 2K or 4K master? Surely they had HD in mind when doing it, if only for HD TV transmission?
Disney Home Video is increasingly a riddle inside an enigma - stuff like The Tinker Bell Move gets better special features than re-released so-called Special Editions of Animated Classics. Mary Poppins is released somewhat haphazardly on one format only (and apparently for publicity for the musical) and films like Enchanted get minimal effort in their supplements.

If this were also being released on Blu-Ray, then this release would arguably have a point. But since it looks like it isn't, then there doesn't seem to be much point, even with some non-game new special features, especially since in most places, the current Mary Poppins DVD is still quite widely available...

Ah don't worry. Disney is just toying with our emotions deliberately. Soon they will unveil an incredible new line of DVDs and Blu-Rays that will take us completely by surprise, and write a press release saying "Ta Daa! You guys soooooo totally fell for it! Did you think we would be that cruel? We respect our fans so much! (continue promotional bullshit)"

I guess I'll double dip...
EDIT: Actually, make that triple dip.

This definitely seems odd to me, especially when someone at HomeTheaterForum overheard talk of a new Poppins restoration. While that had to have been for the Blu-Ray, I can't see Disney putting all that effort into a BD release without releasing a simultaneous DVD counterpart. If the 45th Anniversary Edition featured the new restoration, Disney surely would've made a big deal about it. Since they're not, this means either:
1. The post at HomeTheaterForum is false, and the upcoming BD (whenever that'll be) will utilize the 2004 restoration.
2. Disney's actually putting more effort into the BD without even considering a DVD version.
3. The film will be re-released on DVD for the fifth time (?!) around the time of the BD premiere and will contain a new restoration.

Number 2 sounds most likely Disneykid. I'm guessing later in 2009 will see the Blu-ray with more bonuses like Cinexplore or something else that will require an additional amount of time. The delay could be along the similar lines of WB's delay in An American in Paris and Gigi's blu-ray releases.
If that is true, than can the restoration team on Poppins please move on to Bedknobs and Broomsticks now?

Even though I share everyone's sentiments of "Why this? Why not (Insert Any Title That Needs Proper Treatment on DVD)?", I am a bit excited for the four featurettes. Of course, I don't know how they're dividing it into four (An adaptation featurette, a casting featurette, a music featurette, and a general all-out praising featurette?). But I'm still looking forward to it.
Still, there are far more titles that need to be revisited on DVD (the aforementioned Happiest Millionaire and Bedknobs and Broomsticks). But Mary Poppins has always been a proven seller (it's like, never out of print) so this isn't unexpected, just unnecessary.

I'm a little disappointed to hear no news of the new restoration/re-assembled version that was talked about at HTF, but as some of you said it may still be in the works for the eventual blu-ray release.
In any case I'm looking forward to the new featurettes on the Broadway musical. I saw the show in New York earlier this year and it was fantastic. Very moving and spectacular. Ashley Brown had me in love with her portrayal of Mary Poppins which, considering how much I love Julie in the role, was no small accomplishment.

"She sailed out of the Disney-blue heavens, umbrella in hand, and promptly elicited every gorgeous adjective in the book from reviewers coast to coast."

This can't be the final cover art. Can it?
This looks like the '98 DVD release (the colors, the similar picture of Julie...), which I prefer over this.
Since I don't have this movie on DVD yet, I'll pick up the 2004 release. There is no way that I am going to encourage Disney when they re-release the exact same thing and add pointless extra features. I'm pretty sure this re-release qualifies for a new low for Disney.
