Let us know whether or not the version you see of The Three Little Pigs is an edited one. ;)

Sounds like a really fun class, but I'd probably pester the prof way too much.

Disney Class

Post by Disney Duster »

Oh, I'm not offended personally, but I think different races, human rights, gender and sex are all really important topics that shouldn't just be thought of as fun or light. It's not really your fault, that's how the schools view them, I guess. But you know, even some people think chemistry is fun, I believe, so...

I'm not crazy about everything in the Wizard of Oz, it's true, mainly the wicthes catch my attention. But I still like the first book, film, and Wicked, book and play. Glad you like Wicked. Did you read the book or just see the play?

Mickey and Minnie what?

Thanks for updating us, this is terrific, you're telling us what happens as it happens.

Well, last thursday, we watched "The Three Little Pigs." It was so funny. The class loved it! The Prof showed us a clip of the "real" version. I can't believe Disney actually had the Wolf dress up as a stereotypical Jewish salesman. Wow...

Anyway, we discussed the cartoon short, then we moved into fairy tales. We discussed A LOT about the Brothers Grimm, and she mentioned Charles Perrault, but we'll get into him much more when we do Cinderella in a few weeks!

Afterwards, we discussed the 1857 version of Snow White. We talked about the characters, how beauty plays a BIG role, and a little bit about the stepmother. The Prof mentioned a little about the film "Ever After," and how much she loved it and how that version of Cinderella makes you feel sorry for the Stepmother. (I had to tell her after class how Ever After is one of my favorite movies and my favorite telling of Cinderella, aside from the Disney one). She mentioned how villians are always the best to animate in Disney films. Then she said how she gets women, who are getting married to men with children, coming to her and asking advice on dealing with their future stepchildren and not wanting to be seen as the "wicked stepmother."

Tomorrow, we are going to watch Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (the Disney version). Even though I'm not the biggest fan of the movie, I think it'll be a great experience watching it with my friends in the class and other strangers as well.

I'll tell you guys how it goes!

Today, we watched Snow White! It was fun because people were into it and laughing and stuff. Even though it's not my favorite, I can see why it's a masterpiece. Disney did an awesome job with this picture. My only complaint is that, like Cinderella, this movie focused A LOT on the dwarfs and the animals. I wish there were more scenes with Queen Grimhilde. And in some parts, it moved slow.

That class sounds really awesome! Must be fun learning about Disney all the time. If I was taking that class I'd want to wake up and go to school everyday! :D

This does sound like the perfect class. I know a lot about what you are discussing but it sounds much more intresting than anything my school has ever offered. The most exiting thing in my school film studies and thats more directed towards more arty films.

So, class keeps getting better and better!

Today was all about Cinderella. We discussed both the Perrault and Grimm versions of the story.

Thursday, we're gonna watch it (the Disney version).

Next week, we'll discuss the movie.

Oh, and since I kept answering her hard questions, the Prof asked me my name in front of everyone. Now the whole class of 120 knows my name. UGH!

One more thing, we took our first test last week, and today we got our scores back. I missed one, which I'm mad at because it was like one of the easiest questions on the test.

Disney Class

Post by Disney Duster »

Oh, I'm so very, very excited! I can't wait to find out what happens with Cinderella! Although when I E-mail you I guess you can tell me more.

It's so great how you answered all those hard questions and got noticed for excellence, even if it is a "fun class". But the great feeling of doing well is the same for any class.

Haha, yeah Escapay. No, actually, I'm sitting with three friends, so it's all good.

Today, we watched Cinderella. The teacher had to skip the Main Titles (since the class is only 75 minutes). The movie was great on a big projection screen. I wondered whether some students were watching it for the first time. If they were, I wonder what was going on in their heads.

Anyway, the movie had LOTS of laughs. Although I've watched it soooo many times, I've never realized how funny this movie actually is. I use to think that the animals parts were (sometimes) boring, but listening to other people's reactions, the mice were def. used for comic relief (unlike the dwarfs scenes in Snow White that seemed to go on forever).

Another advantage of watching it on the big screen was the fact that Lady Tremaine actually looked scary, especially in all her close-ups. Oh, and the chateau and castle looked very beautiful on a full screen.

In the end, I think everyone was happy that Cinderella (having been through all that abuse) finally got her happy ending :-)

Just an update:

After watching Cinderella, we analyzed the movie to death. But, it was fun.

Then, we proceeded with the Private SNAFU shorts, talked about the Good Neighbor Policy, the strike at Disney, watched the Donald Duck cartoon on Nazism, watched Thrifty Pig, and finally we watched Winged Scourge.

We then went into the Uncle Remus tales, and we read a few Brer Rabbit tales. Talked about slavery in America, then we watched "Song of the South." I've always wanted to know why this movie was so controversial, and I can see why, but it was good. I mean, it wasn't the best movie out there, but the class enjoyed it. I FINALLY know where Zip-a-dee-doo-dah is from!!!

Then we had another test.

Now, we are on Mary Poppins. I just finished reading the book, and I liked it a lot. My only problem is the character of Mary Poppins. She was just...unlikable. I'm glad the character was slighty changed for the movie. Many of the students didn't like the way Mary Poppins was portrayed in the book. When I was reading the last chapter, I was thinking "why do these kids miss her? She was mean and cruel to them."

We are going to watch the film on Tuesday, discuss it on Thursday, then move on to Winnie the Pooh.

I've been reading through this thread since the start. I'll chime in and add that, yes, I'm just as jealous as everyone else! But I'm also really glad that you have the opportunity to take this course, and Its such a relief (and SO cool!) to know that there is a class being offered about this topic somewhere.

Lol, I thought about this thread yesterday while I was flipping through my college course catalog for next quarter... In the back of my mind I kept wishing I could find something like this.. but, no luck :( *sigh*

sabertoothdagger, her name ia Paula Connolly. I don't remember the name of the book, but I'll ask her.

Anyway, since the last time I updated, we have done a lot. After Mary Poppins, we had to read "Winnie-the-Pooh" and "The House of Pooh Corner." Normally, I love reading, but I had other classes to worry about, so I had to read the two books in a 48 hour period (before the test). We then talked about the author and his kid, Christopher Robbin. Sad to hear that the real Chris Robbin detested his dad for making him a household name. Anyway, we watched clips from "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh."

After Winnie, we took our last test. We have three tests and the teacher drops the lowest score. I've gotten an A on my first two tests, so technically, I didn't have to take the last one. But I've never skipped class, so I decided to go. I ended up getting an A on it, so the teacher is going to drop my lowest A, which was the second test. You would be surprised at how many people are not doing good in the class. I mean, it's the easiest class ever. The only way to fail is not going to class and or not paying attention. I gotta admit though, the tests are kind of tricky.

The last thing is the final, which won't be till December. Anyway, our next assignment was to read the original Beauty and the Beast. It was such a lovely story!!! Some quotes from the story are very facebook worthy :-)
Then, we talked about the story, then on tuesday, we watched the movie. Everyone loved it, and I fell more in love with it. I didn't use to like the movie when I was little, but now, I appreciate it! Today, we analyzed it.

On Tuesday, we are going to watch "The Lion King," so I'm very excited about that because I have not seen that movie since 2003!!
