And even so, why should people immediately pounce on a film that's got the same source material as a Disney one? Seriously, is The Lion King that much better than Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet? (it isn't) And does 1953's Peter Pan have to be the definitive and only-acceptable version? (it doesn't)

It's horrible news because in my opinion, Mulan is one of the weakest Disney films in the canon. I don't like the story, and a live action film with a similar story doesn't sound interesting whatsoever.
JDCB1986, yes, you were talking about the Disney version. So don't try to deny it. and make Albert look like a fool.
Super Aurora wrote:$ 30 million? That's low budget. Dragonball has more budget than that(100 million)
Too Low.....It's just "PATHETIC".
Saw's budget was $1.2 million. And they are what, on a 5th movie now? Just because the budget it low doesn't mean it can't do well.

Also take into account this thread was originally posted in Disney Discussions. And Albert certainly doesn't look like the fool here. Some people just can't admit when they are wrong and move on. That is foolish.

I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but it bears repeating: They did it once before back in the 1960s. I'm not a big fan of Chinese opera, but I'll take this version over Disney's "adaptation".
According to several online sites, our beloved Mulan is going to be turned into a 3D live-action remake =D Disney is backing the project.
Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi is slated to both produce and star in a live-action English-language 3D film backed by Disney, based on the Chinese folktale Mulan, reported Chinese media.
The film will revolve around the lady warrior Hua Mulan (Zhang), who impersonates a man to enlist in the army in her elderly father's place and repel an invasion of her homeland.
Along the way, she becomes involved with fellow soldier General Li, who admires her and risks his life to hide her gender as state laws forbade women from joining the army.
Zhang was said to have been planning this film since last year, but the project got shelved due to funding problems after she became embroiled in a string of high-profile scandals.
She apparently went hunting for investors at the Cannes International Film Festival in May this year and managed to rope in Disney, who agreed to invest US$100 million (S$136 million) in the film.
US director Charles Russel, who had previously directed "The Mask" and "The Scorpion King", has been picked to helm this action-heavy film.
US-born singer-actor Wang Lee Hom, who speaks fluent English, is reportedly the favourite for the role of General Li.
The film is tentatively scheduled to go into production in China in October.
It's been 12 years after Disney's Mulan and already Disney is remaking it! The again, Beowulf and Sweeny Todd were remade numerous of times before the ones made by Robert Zemeckis and Tim Burton respectivly.
Actually, from what I can gather in the article, Disney is only financially backing the makers of the film. So, it wasn't their initiative. Though 100 million is quite a hefty sum of money. And at the Cannes film festival? I didn't know Disney was represented there.
Though this is for Chinese audiences, I don't think that this will be localized for Western audiences.
I guess this is like in the 90s. They remade Silver Age features then (Jungle Book, 101 Dalmatians), and they are remaking Renaissance features now (maybe they'll do something with Hunchback and finally do a 2-Disc DVD of the original for a tie-in).
