Help choosing a movie ...

Post by Jules »

Short and Sweet.

I want to watch a movie at a local theatre tonight. This theatre in question offers movies that started circulating in my country months ago and have gone out of the regular cinemas. Hence it charges very little.

It has about four screens and tonight The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Hancock and Meet Dave are playing.

Which one should I see?

P.S. Should I opt for Mummy, need I remember the first two films well? I've seen them but it's been a loooooooong time.

Thanks!

Avoid Mummy like the plague. I'd go with Hancock. It's far from a masterpiece but it's an OK way to pass the time with a 2 hour flick.

I'd stay home and put in a DVD you love instead.

None of the offered movies are worth the admission price no matter how low it is.

Unless you really want to go out and spend time outside of the house, I'd say go for it. But if you have to push yourself to go, don't do it. I would go with Widdi's suggestion and stay home and watch a DVD. For instance, when I am really desperate and want to go out, I would watch any film to pass the time and be outside with friends, otherwise I wouldn't even bother going to the movies. Hope this helps! :)

Any other DVD will be a greater experience than any of those movies

Well, I've been and come back. I'm afraid I didn't catch your suggestions magicalwands and Widdi, but thanks to all three of you! :) I went with Hancock, which I did quite enjoy even if the film felt strangely contrived in the story department. I also found there was a screening of Kung Fu Panda so I watched that aswell. Two movies in one night, lol. :P

The problem I had was that I haven't been to such a packed theatre for years. Kung Fu Panda was especially bad. I mean ... I wasn't expecting much people! The film has been playing in Malta since at least last July so I thought audiences would have diminished by this time. The theatre was full of kids all shouting and talking and asking "What happened?" and wailing "Mummy I want to go home!". The din was loud enough to make it hard to discern the dialogue, let alone enjoy the ... ahem ... surround sound. Moreover, theatres in Malta have a habit of playing their films at low volume levels (a habit I suspect was initiated about 17 years ago when the first high-end surround sound cinemas appeared locally and to which ignorant snobs replied on the newspapers by claiming "The sound is too loud!" Yeah ... I'm sure those people know everything about surround sound ) But I digress. The fact is people need to CONTROL THEIR BLOODY KIDS! Have a bit of respect. Geeez!

The Hancock experience was somewhat better but I had the misfortune of being seated next to rather fat woman who during the film just had to broadcast everything she was thinking to the rest of the world. Ever heard of etiquette? Of course not! At the beginning of the movie she was even saying something about someone calling her fat and how she replied by saying she'd f*ck his mother or something. Yeah, I heard it. As Roger Ebert would say, she's an ignorant boor.

In the end, magicalwands and Widdi ... yes it would have been better to stay at home. True, I saw the awesome Kung Fu Panda ... but I couldn't enjoy it very much. :( A cinema is supposed to give you a cinematic experience you can't get at home due to technological limitations. Ironically, I'm sure I would have enjoyed both Hancock and Kung Fu Panda more had I seen them in the comfort of my home. And anyway, this theatre in question is a rather low quality one too. I noticed that the screens were dirty (can that affect image quality?) and as I said before, the volume levels are always kept too low - so what's the use of installing a Dolby Digital sound system for each screen (as a golden-looking plaque complete with Dolby logo says outside each auditorium) if you never use it to its full potential?

Rant over. Sometimes I wonder why I write this stuff since I doubt it will interest even 1% of UD users. So if you go through, then congrats. :D

Because there's some who like to read it JC

I told you, put a DVD and enjoy. The sad thing on movie theaters is that many people tend to behave like if they where the only ones watching and you have the "ring-rang-cellphone talkers" the "OMG-did-you-see(...or watch or heard or think or anything you want to add) that" fellows will be glad to spoil your entire movie.

Tip: if you ever watch another animated movie(which being a Disney fan will probably be the case  :D :P ) I suggest to go to the late screenings, you'll live the wonderful world of the adults who like animation :D [/i]

Aawww, thanks! :D

It's just that posts like this are rather ego-centric ... about me, more or less. So I don't expect many people will have the patience to go through the posts. Good to know there are exceptions though. :)

Strangely, I've never had problems with Disney movies. Don't know why ... Let's see. Treasure Planet back in 2003 was fine - I don't recall much people in the theatre. Same goes for Brother Bear. I was the only person in the theatre when I went to see Home on the Range in 2004. Chicken Little in 2006 was far from full too. And Meet the Robinsons last year was on the empty side. Meet the Robinsons was an utter failure in Malta. It opened on March 30th 2007 and stayed in theatres for only one week and a half before the local film distributors pulled it out, probably due to low returns. :(

My God then you're lucky JC!
I love when the room it`s almost empty, considering the seats have an adjustable armrest you can put them up and lay on the seats :P
But then again, that magical thing of being in the movies with a bunch of total strangers is lost.

By then way, if we weren't a little egocentric we won't be what we are, so let's bring the ego! :D

I know you've already seen the movies, but The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was not too bad, if you like the first two. It's a rather mindless action/adventure/comedy with lots of CG, so if you don't go in expecting a Citizen Kane story, then you should be fine... :P

Hancock was about the same, and it was heavily promoted when it came out as some revolutionary new thing. Meet Dave would probably be the worst of the three. I made the mistake of watching Norbit, and from what I have seen, Meet Dave won't be much better. I may still give it a shot, though.
