The design of the Disney heroines

Post by pap64 »

Story time!

A year ago, I was complaining about an anime called "Lucky Star". My main beef is that the series stars girls who are in high school and are 18 years old. But are designed to look like Kindergartners and sound like toddlers. The issue is that they clearly wanted to attract Loli fanatics and convince them that its OK to fantasize about them since they were 18. My friend's counterpoint was that the Disney heroines (mainly the princesses) were designed to look older than they really are, to be sexually pleasing.

So I decided to look back at the design of the Disney Princesses and heroines.

Snow White is believed to be 14 in the movie. Even though she is a young girl she wears make up and looks older than she really is. To some, this might be a problem.

Cinderella's age is never mentioned. But judging from her anatomy she might be 18, 19 or 20. The fact is that she looks well proportioned for her to be 15 or 16.

Alice and Wendy look their age, no problems here.

Tinkerbell is an immortal being, meaning that she has no age. But she was drawn to look attractive.

Aurora...Hmm. We know she's 16 in the movie, but looks older. The argument is that many girls can look older, even if they are 16. But still, her face and body look like they belong on an older woman. Again, this would be proving my friend's point.

Ariel looks and acts like a 16 year old teenager. Her big, bright eyes and small figure give that away. Yes, she wears a shell bra, but her breasts are drawn accordingly (ie, she's not huge for a teenager :p ).

Belle...I believe she might be 18 or 19 when the story starts, like Cinderella before her. Once again, her figure, voice and mannerisms belong to that of a young woman, not a teenager. If she is younger that I expected...I'll be damned.

Jasmine I am clueless about. She sounds like a teenager (especially with the whole "WHATEVER I DO WHAT I WANT!" attitude that channels Ariel in a way). But she might be older...I need help with this. She wearing those outfits make her jailbait material... XD

Pocahontas was originally a little girl, so Disney's Pocahontas is much older so that the love story is believable. Like Cinderella and Belle she sounds and acts like a young woman.

Esmeralda is clearly an older woman, probably in her mid twenties.

Meg=definitely young woman.

Mulan...Hmm, she's definitely in the age that mothers train her to be Geishas, so she could be 16. Her mentality is also pretty young, but noble. 17 maybe. Her design also resembles that of the anatomy of a teenager.

Jane is a scholar, probably in the age to be in college, so I say young woman. She looks normal for a woman her age.

Now onto Yzma...SHE'S ANCIENT! MOVING ON!

Kida from "Atlantis" is eternally young.

So from my investigation, we can all agree that the majority of the Disney heroines are in their late teens or young womanhood. Some look their age, others are a complete mystery.

What do you think, though? I would greatly appreciate if you guys can contribute facts that will help me prove that my friend is partially wrong.

Ummm you forgot the most important princess of them all...PRINCESS EILONWY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

she looks her age though. 13-15 i'm assuming.

I think the only Princesses that can be used in that kind of arguement are Aurora and Snow White since we definately know their ages.

Aurora- I remember when i first saw Sleeping Beauty after i was old enough to notice her age and realized how off it was. I always thought she was in her 20's when i was a little kid. Her voice and look present her that way. I would argue that since she was raised by the 3 good fairies that she would have a older set demeanor, but i've never heard any designer present that idea. i know that i have a friend who had older parents and she looks, acts, and sounds like them. seriously, she's 2 days younger than me but when we would go out in public people who didn't know her well would assume she was my mother. As for Aurora's voice, one of those fairies classically trained her very well! Actual Age: 16, Interpreted Age: 18-25

Snow White- I think it's just the style of the time first of all. Secondly Her character isn't wearing make-up. That's how she's supposed to look naturally, hence the description at the begining of the story, fairest in the land bit, and well... name. Her voice seems shrill enough to be young or really old lol. I think that she does overall seem younger and doesn't really look or act that much older than her age. Actual age: 14, Interpreted age: 14-16

Oh, I think we may have opened a can of worms here. Anyway, I've got a couple of things to add.

One of my old Disney books mentioned that Jasmine was supposed to be turning 16 in the film, but they decided to state it as her "next birthday" rather than give little girls the impression that it's ok to get married so young. :p It seems the merchandise (aka storybooks) claim she's turning 18, however. Sounds good to me!

I've always assumed that Snow White might have been depicted as an older-looking character had the animators been more successful with Goddess of Spring. It was easier to animate a younger-looking character at the time because they weren't used to handling believable human designs and caricatures just yet.

Oh, and more about Mulan . . .

She couldn't have too much of a curvy, grown-up looking figure, it would have proven too difficult to disguise her as a man as required by the story.

Yes, I'm aware that Geishas are from Japan. However, I have no idea what they trained her to be in the film, so I said Geisha because I was too lazy to look it up. :p

Ariel and Aurora looks older then 16,Ariel looks older and Aurora looks like 20 years old.
Jasmine is 18 and looks that way, maybe a little older thought.
Jessica Rabbit is 40 I guess,or maybe 30.
I think that Giselle is 20.
Sally is a rag doll so she has no age.
Tiana is 18 if I"m not wrong and looks 18 too.
And Mulan wasn't trained to be a Geisha, there were looking for a match for her so she can bring honor and find love for herself,so Giselle,Aurora and Snow White are Geishas because they dreamed of finding true love?.

She was brought to a matchmaker who would "train" her to be a respectful wife.

Kinda the opposite to a Geisha don't you think?

Alice and Wendy are supposed to be like 10 years old. But Kathryn Beaumont's voice made them sound much older than that as if they were 13 or 14, IMO.

Ever notice how with each new Disney heroine who got more and more independent and less and less "my prince will save me!"....their boobs got bigger. Look from Ariel to Kida  (Except Mulan, for the reasons already stated)

^That may have to do with the fact she has the skinniest waist line, which would make her bust appear bigger.

I thought that was Poca?
I remember reading Poca's boobs change in the movie (Big to smaller, to bigger etc).
This was done because parent felt they were 'Too Big' and some scenes were already animated.

It always has bothered me that Aurora ia animated so beautifully in the forest/cottage sequences but the last half of the film she looks like a cel pulled across the screen (until the final dance with Phillip in the castle). I realize part of that time she's either sad at learning her true identity or under Maleficent's trance and she should be a little more wooden, but it still bothers me all the same because we never see her again quite as vibrant as the forest/cottage scenes. Does anyone else feel this way? :?

Really? I think it's Aurora.
And I think that Jasmine is the thinnest Princess, some of the other Princess are also thine but not like her,her desgin doesn't really make sense but I like it.
And Snow White is the chubbiest Princess, she's thine but sorta chubby comparing to Jasmine for exmaple.

Pocahontas is built! ;)

Exactly! Pocahontas has a fuller figure overall (bust, hips, etc.) but I think Aurora's bust-to-waist ratio probably has a larger difference, making her seem like she might be bigger. Aurora always seemed very iconic within the era she was animated and reminds me of the very striking Elizabeth Montgomery.

As for Giselle, I'd wager she's actually in her early thirties (judging by the on-screen Amy Adams). I'll admit her animated self feels younger than that, possibly twenties? Maybe it's proof right there that animated characters don't necessarily reflect their ages. Either that or appearances can be deceiving!

Ariel feels like a teenager to me, gawkiness and all. Interesting her story in the original movie is a metaphor for sexual awakening.

I don't feel characters have to be appear "older" in order to emanate sexuality. The Disney heroines are definitely designed to be attractive overall (they'd be stupid not to do this) and I'd say a certain amount of sexual presence (even in an innocent way) is to be expected. For example, part of Ariel's appeal is her youthful innocence and naiveté in that she doesn't even realize how attractive she is.

According to Press releases of the time, Cinderella is an:

18 year old, blue-eyed blond, who's 5' 4", 120 lbs. with a show size "in proportion to her stature" (you do the math I'm no shoe expert).

Jasmine's boobs bounce. I am a straight woman and I can't help but see them bounce every time I watch that movie. Its distracting.

They bounce when Jafar tells her Aladdin is dead. I know its because she gasps, but that had to be a BIG gasp.

And that's why I love Aladdin (ok well that's not the ONLY reason... >_>)
But the thing that makes Woody special, is he'll never give up on you... ever. He'll be there for you, no matter what.
