I don't post on here very often, but I am a MASSIVE Disney fan and collector and cannot believe anyone would prefer the DVD screenshots to the VASTLY superior hi-definition captures.

I loved the Sleeping Beauty transfer on DVD a few years back (the proper 2-discer that preserved the aspect ratio)

But this blu-ray release is going to look different class.

A significantly higher resolution production from the same master as the DVD has come from is bound to look better.

I bought Sleeping Beauty on VHS when it first came out, what, nearly 20 years ago? and I am ASTOUNDED with how far we've come and the way I get to see the movie when it hits blu-ray later this month in the UK.

I'm with wildphantom on this one.

I'm pretty sure that the picture IS supposed to be that sharp but we're so used to seeing it not that clear to know any better. I personally like to see the deatail that someone spent hours into putting in each film. I admire the artistic ability that the animators in the studio had while working on this film and when it's "blurry" you don't really get that. You can't see the details in the backgrounds or in each character's design, as they were intended to be. Afterall detail was one of Walt's visions for this film, that's a lot of why it took so much time and money to make.

Wow. The Blu-Ray shots look PHENOMENAL. Sadly, I don't have a Blu-Ray player (getting one for Christmas, though), but I'll probably get a copy of the Blu-Ray because that includes disc 1 of the PE on DVD. I'll probably wind up buying a copy of the PE DVD also because I would want disc 2 on DVD so I can check out the bonus features, that way I won't have to wait 2 months to get a player.

I really like the DVD screencaps a lot better myself. The Blu-ray screencaps look like the Beauty and the Beast DVD without the cramming seriously! I think I am going with the DVD since I do not have Blue-ray player at this time lol.

I too prefer the DVD version.

@wildphantom, wow... I realize you like the Blu-Ray one better, but I don't think it's "VASTLY" superior...

What the heck's up with the aspect ratio? I don't see more picture on either... did they just take one of them and stretch it? The Blu-Ray ones are clearly wider, but did they just stretch it out?

I wonder if it would be possible to get the Blu-Ray and recolor it to match the DVD. When I get a Blu-Ray drive I'll put that on my to-do list. Then we could have 1080p with correct colors :)

I noticed that there is a bit more picture on the Blu-ray captures.

Here's where I see it most:

DVD: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDRevie ... ay/7sd.jpg
Blu-ray: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDRevie ... y/7brd.jpg

Look at the left side of the Blu-ray capture. There seems to be fire not on the DVD version.

The Blu-Ray cap is 12% larger, but is the same ratio as the DVD. It has not been artificially stretched or altered.

Won't say a word because if I do, I'll regret it and it'll likely be misunderstood by the intended reader (as always).

The "2" is missing from "42".

Thank you escapay! And just to throw it out there, I think these 2 images specifically verify how much better the Blu-ray image is. Or at least that's my humble opinion.

If it's too bright - turn the brightness down

Not everyone's TV are calibrated exactly the same anyhow.

Ah, I was assuming the vertical height was the same on both. I'm sure in reality the Blu-Ray's like 3 or 4 times larger, but it was shrunk to avoid killing people's bandwidth.

Well, I won't go on about it either... but you all know what I prefer in the movies... basically that Lowry leave it well alone and not make it look like it was animated yesterday. Obviously my wish won't come true, and the DVD looks like the lesser of two evils here.

Yes, but this isn't an issue of the monitor's brightness. It's comparing two sources... one of which is brighter than the other.

If I had my druthers, I'd just take the 70mm, clean it, and scan it in, and that would be the end of it. Too much remastering causes the video to look like a Pichus encode... flat, lifeless, with all the detail sucked out of it.

WAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! I don't like how the new release doesn't look like my 20 year old VHS!

WAAAAAAAAAA!!!! I like throwing around catch phrases like "flat" [to criticize a 2-D animated movie to begin with], and "lifeless" [whatever the hell that's supposed to mean] because it makes me sound like an expert and band wagon's are fun to jump on!

WAAAAAAA!!! I can't be bothered viewing these restorations on an actual HD set so I'll just complain looking at compressed screencaps on a standard definition monitor!

WAAAAAAAAA!!!!! I obviously don't have any experience in the field of film restoration but I know better than anyone else, just cause!

WAAAAAAAA!!! I'm too busy complaining about expensive, time consuming restorations to notice that Disney has still not put out anamorphic releases for movies (Rocketeer) or just used old video masters on new releases (any number of older catalogue titles)!

WAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! I want to see more picture but I don't like how wide this release is!

WAAAAAAAAA!!!! Why Don't I have this release, which I so obviously hate, right now!

[the list goes on but I'm afraid all major metropolitan area wambulences are in full service right now]

About the comparsion pics of the Phillip vs. Dragon Malificent against the orange glow. The DVD one makes more sense for that moment because the heat would make things look soft-edged and blot out detail.

Just messing with ya, Hanger. But in other forums this would be their counter argument, sadly.

I'm trying to decide where to buy Sleeping Beauty.

Does anybody know of any in-store bonuses for Sleeping Beauty?

Will Walmart have anything? How about a steel book case at Future Shop? I don't have Best Buy around here so I can't get it there.

I'm going to buy the regular DVD for now, however when I have more money I'll get the Blu Ray too. I don't have the equipment yet for Blu Ray, but you know, Disney and their vault.

^I think I'll do that too. And when that times comes hopefully the blu-ray disc's (and BD players') price will have drastically dropped.
