Which Would You Choose?

Post by Pasta67 »

So I was at MovieStop today because I needed to use a coupon before it expired. It only applied to used DVDs of movies that were $12 or lower.

So I'm browsing the animation aisles and, low and behold, the mother of all out-of-print Disney DVDs is right in front of me: Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs - Platinum Edition. Me? I haven't even seen this DVD in person before, so I'm totally geeking out, picking it up and treating it like I'm Gollum and it's the ring.

So I keep walking, and I see another rare out-of-print Disney DVD: Tarzan - 2-Disc Collector's Edition. So at this point, I'm in geek heaven, going crazy for two DVDs that I really want but have never even seen.

The catch is that I only have enough cash in-hand for one. Oh cruel fate.

So, after a few minutes of debating, I finally end up choosing the Tarzan DVD. I did this for two reasons.

1.) I was one of many who felt personally screwed over for having to settle for Disney's crappy 2005 reissue. Figured I'd grab the better DVD while I had the chance.

2.) Snow White's being released next year, so I figured I'd wait to see how the new set measures up. See if video quality's improved a teensy bit or whatnot. Plus, with a new release coming up, more and more used copies of the 2001 DVD will start popping up in the store, so I'll have more chances in the future to grab this release if I see fit. More chances than I'd get in the future to find another 2-Disc Tarzan.

This leads me to my question. If you were in the same situation, which one would you choose? This is obviously a situation that those of us who got into DVD later than others don't experience every day, so I figured it'd be cool for a little discussion. If you were me, what would you have done? Do you agree with my decision, or do you want to punch me in the face because of it? I'm curious.

Oh, and if anybody's wondering what I spent my coupon on, neither of the DVDs were under $12, so I couldn't use it, completely throwing out the reason why I went in there in the first place. So now I need to waste gas and go back AGAIN and get rid of that sucker before it expires. Is it worth it?! That's a debate for another day!

I wouldn't punch you in the face...more like slap you upside the head with a slipcover :P joking of course...*hides giant slipcover*

Personally, I would have gone for Snow White only because I have Tarzan therefore Snow White was a more logical choice. If you didn't have Tarzan I'd still go for Snow White but hide the Tarzan dvd in a completely random place that nobody would find it in unless they had seen me do it. 8)

I already have both, though even after I bought them, I still would stumble across used copies every so often. I should've bought those too and sold them here! But if I were in your situation I too would likely have picked Tarzan and for the same reasons too. It got screwed over in its R1 re-release, and since there will be a new Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 2009, the old editions will crop up used in the months leading up to it anyway.

Hell, if you're going back again, might as well get more cash and nab Snow White while you're there again, along with another DVD that's under $12.

:o The special features in the second disk of Snow White are priceless, who knows if they're going to put those extras on the new DVD.
Tarzan would be the last movie I'd compare to this one but I guess to all his own. :)

I have Snow White, so I would have gotten Tarzan. But if I didn't have SW, I probably would have ended up getting Snow, anyway.

I already own Snow White, but I really do not care much for Tarzan, so I wouldn't have gotten neither.

I dont have either, but I would probably have gone for Snow White, as I do like that movie more than Tarzan.

For me personally, I'd have gone for Snow White. I started my Disney collection in 2002/2003 (late 02, early 03), so I just missed out on Snow White and have been waiting for it ever since! It's the only platinum edition missing from my collection!

If I were to be as lucky as you and come across it in one of the aisles, I would've been so ecstatic I'd have to be removed by security (well, not quite but you get the idea )

I'd get both!

Actually I would take a while in that store trying to decide. I'd want Tarzan because it's much better than the 2005 re-release, but I'd also want Snow White because, although there's a new release coming next year, you can't be sure what special features are going to be dropped for the new PE. How much was each DVD?

I know but I've waited so long and the features might be different to the new, upcoming release.

Maybe the new features will be better? (Well, the Sleeping Beauty PE seems MUCH better then the 2003 DVD).

That's true, maybe they will be better and as they say, good things come to those who wait. Thanks Ariel'sprince, I don't even know what the new features will be yet but I feel more optimistic about them already :D

You"re wellcome :D I think that the new features will be better, they might a few things like a few deleted scenes and maybe they"ll add more (Like I remember I read that there was supposed to be a scene that Snow White make a figure of her prince, like Aurora had her an animale friends making her a dream prince and Giselle made her statue and The Prince found her,was that on the old Platinum Edition?).

I'd have gone for the Sleeping Beauty, solely because I don't like Tarzan if I'm honest. Sleeping Beauty on the other hand is just a wonderful film.

I think you made the right decision, Pasta. As others have said, we've got a Snow White re-release coming a year from now that could very well be an improvement over the 2001 edition if Sleeping Beauty's PE is any indication. Tarzan, however, is up in limbo. The 2005 downgrade is still in print, and a DVD re-release seems really unlikely in the near future. The only thing that's plausible is that Disney may release Tarzan on Blu-Ray within the next two years containg all of the CE features. That's uncertain, though, so it makes more sense to pick up the title with a hazy future than the one with a clearly set one.

Luckily for me, I hopped aboard the DVD wagon early, so I was able to get both Tarzan's CE and Snow White's PE when they were first released. :D Feel free to hate me now. ;)

Ariel'sprince, I highly doubt the new features will be better, as Disney's releases haven't been that great, and the first PE was already amazing.

They'll probably just be newer features, not necessarily better features. :P

If the new Sleeping Beauty: Platinum Edition is any indication of how future Platinums (or other high-profile re-releases) will be, hold on to the old edition. Sure, you'll get a repeat of some of the important stuff, but there will still be valuable material that is excluded from the new edition.

So Pasta, go and get that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs sooner rather than later!
