Pirates 4
WAIT...ATLANTIS?!!?!!!?!!!!!
I thought Jack was looking for THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH at the end of the last movie. And because they set that up, I wanted to see it finished.
And Disney already has an Atlantis movie!

As long time readers will know, I'm not a fan of the Pirates movies. In my mind they rely far too much on one (or maybe two) trick(s).
The main selling point is of course Johnny Depp/Captain Jack Sparrow. But really, he just doesn't appeal to me. So you can understand why I don't like the movies. I really can't understand why the majority of people hail Captain Jack as being so good – I'm not anti-Depp, the man has produced some fine work. In fact, the vast majority of his work is superior to his Captain Jack performance! So why is Captain Jack so popular? Sometimes I feel that I'm the only sane one in a world of crazies!
The second selling point, if you look at it that way, is the effects. All three films have had stupidly large effects budgets, and I'm strongly of the opinion that effects do not make a movie. They can enhance a movie – they can, if used correctly and as part of a winning script, enhance a movie beyond words. But they can't make up for bad writing. And I feel all three movies suffer from bad writing – especially the last two (when you hear that they started filming before the script was finished, who don't really have to be a rocket scientist to put two and two together). The first film is nothing but an extended (boy is it extended) runaround. I'm not really sure WHAT exactly the final two films actually are.
Ordinarily that's not a problem. A lot of cult movies straddle genres and moods and don't actually conform to any standard genre and are excellent movies. The thing is, they are cult movies because their stylistic zig-zagging makes them less appealable to the mainstream audience. The second and third Pirate movies have so much money pumped into them, they HAVE to be a mainstream success. And I think that they failed, or to quote the internets were an "epic fail". The fact both were made back to back meant that none of the feedback from the second could be used to judge the tone of the third, and that too was, IMO, a bad decision.
Yes, the audiences went to see the movies in droves, but I think most were disappointed. How many went to see At World's End hoping that everything would be neatly tied up, and were perplexed by a film with even more thrown into it than Dead Man's Chest?
Critics on Rotten Tomatoes award them 54% and 45% respectively, compared to 79% for the first film.
Basically, everyone was taken in by the hype – the filmmakers more then the audience perhaps? But that's not to say people can't enjoy the films at all, just like lots of people enjoy "cult" films that most people are indifferent to. I for example love "Stuart Saves His Family" another film with a somewhat confused tone and crosses a few genres. But that film totally failed at the theatres (and on DVD, which can be a sort of spiritual rebirth for some failed movies). So I'm not going to criticise anyone personally for liking the films.
To me, if they want to make a new film, it has to be simpler story wise, have fewer characters, have a clearly defined goal set-up at the start of the film, along with a clearly described threat and (controversially perhaps) have less emphasis on effects. Disney needs to cut the budget because frankly, when you simply throw money at filmmakers it makes them lazy. Not more creative, or harder working, just lazy ("We can fix that in post-production", "We'll add a scene later if it doesn't make sense", "We'll re-film the opening to reference this new plot point we've just added on a whim because it sounds "kewl"" etc. etc.)
As for trilogies, I don't consider a series of three to be a trilogy just because it has three parts. I recently bought the Starship Troopers trilogy, but its not. Its just three films set in the same "universe" (although reportedly that's somewhat debatable with the second film). To me a trilogy has to be planned out in advance, so every instalment tells a single, unified story, and that unified story has a clearly defined beginning and end. I don't see the current Pirates films having this, Curse of the Black Pearl was clearly written without Pts 2&3 in mind at all. (Although oddly, the fact it has a subtitle implies some form of sequel was perhaps semi-planned).
As for Can't Pay, Won't Pay's list of film series, I think even Alberto himself will admit most of them self-flushed their originality and potential down the toilet with each successive instalment.
I once read any long running series becomes a parody of itself, as it self-cannibalises the elements of the original instalment(s) that made it popular. It's something that is very hard to stop. Even great, well regarded series in literature suffer from it – Sherlock Holmes does (not helped by the fact Doyle didn't really want to keep writing them no doubt) and some would argue that Dickens' later works are somewhat a parody of his early works.
One way to stop this is to bring in a fresh view point. So I personally would hope any new Pirates film has a new writing team, a new director and (mostly) new actors. I know some people see sequels not made by the original creators as devil-spawn, but you know one other popular saying: "A change is as good as a rest".

Pirates 4!!!
I heard on the radio that they might be making it & now they are! Does any one know what the plot is? who is in it? Apart from johnny depp. when they are starting to shoot it? please give me info. I'm too excited!!!
I think it would be great if Jack sparrow got married!!! (and stayed that way)
This plot sounds so cool, I'd love to see it, apart from the xxx bit. I agree not Julia Roberts, I really can't see her as a pirate, but How about angelina jolie insted of johanson?enigmawing wrote:Escapay wrote: That'd be quite an entrance. She could be the redhead ("We want the redhead!") who ends up getting sold to Barbossa. He takes her to a room in the inn, where she steals his revolver, holds him at gunpoint, and runs away with his bag of gold, treasure map, and bottle of rum...straight into the arms of Captain Jack. The two then decide that they'll search for the treasure from the map together, and he'll protect her from Barbossa (partly to annoy good ole Hector and partly so he can get the girl and the rum). Then it's a madcap chase around the world as Barbossa chases Jack and Hottie, and the two of them are also continually betraying each other in order to get to the treasure first. Somewhere down the line they'll lose Barbossa, and the big finish can be the two of them both reaching the treasure at the same time, both with revolvers pointed at each other, both not willing to back down. And then all that rampant sexual tension between them finally breaks them and they make mad passionate love all over the the place. The end.
They'll probably have to tone that last scene down from XXX to PG-13, though.I would die!!! Someone tell Disney to DO IT!!!

Angelina is pretty much like Scarlett in many ways, but I think Angelina is too flamboyant so I wouldn't pair her with Johnny Depp if I was the director. I think Scarlett would be a great choice since she's really got a great scence of humour, and I think she'll look great as a red head.

Wow...everything that the trilogy wasn't!netty wrote:To me, if they want to make a new film, it has to be simpler story wise, have fewer characters, have a clearly defined goal set-up at the start of the film, along with a clearly described threat and (controversially perhaps) have less emphasis on effects.
I agree, though. The movies are great for "omfg wow look at all of that!" but the story and characters become lacking as a result of it.
I'm hoping POTC4 is everything the trilogy wasn't. In other words, I don't want it overtly long, I want a story that's easy to understand but still engaging enough to keep you guessing, I don't need a lot of special effects since a couple strategically-choreographed sword fights are a lot better to watch, and I want enough characters to keep track of without having to take off my shoes to count...
Didn't Douglas Adams once say that the his Hitchhiker's Guide stories are a trilogy in five parts?netty wrote:As for trilogies, I don't consider a series of three to be a trilogy just because it has three parts.
So true. I'm still surprised that Police Academy lasted as long as it did when the first one wasn't exactly a film I'd see turn into a franchise. Honestly, the only film series on the list that really succeeds in all its installments is Kieślowski's Dekalog. But then again, it was the only one that was planned out to be a ten-part series.netty wrote:As for Can't Pay, Won't Pay's list of film series, I think even Alberto himself will admit most of them self-flushed their originality and potential down the toilet with each successive instalment.
Thanks!Black pearl wrote:This plot sounds so cool, I'd love to see it, apart from the xxx bit.
And they can probably save the XXX bit for deleted scenes or for the R-rated Director's cut.
Or they could do the classic "as they kiss and the camera pulls away, the scene then transitions to the afterglow" trick. And it could have Jack tied up in the cavern as Hottie McHotHot is loading all the treasure in her ship, and she leaves him saying, "Nothing personal, love." She then blows him a kiss goodbye, leaves a bottle of rum just out of reach of his chained hands, and the screen fades to black as Jack struggles to reach the rum, gives up for now, and mutters to himself, "Women!" What a cliffhanger that would be...

I didn't see Superman 3 or 4 because I heard they were just horrible. Batman's were OK, but there have been TONS of Batman movies made, be it animated, cheesy live action for kids, etc.
I didn't realize there was more than one Monty Python in movie form... Holy Grail is the only one I have... I didn't see any others in the stores.

While I can partly agree (there's plenty of bad sequels out there, but there's also plenty that can genuinely be good if it wasn't a sequel), that wasn't my point. You wrote it out as if the idea of doing a movie series beyond a trilogy was something new that started with Scary Movie and Spider-Man. I was merely correcting you.drf wrote:Well, most of those have one thing in common: The sequels suck.
And Now For Something Completely Different (a movie version of "Monty Python's Flying Circus", with the Pythons re-acting sketches from the first two series, made to introduce US audiences to the Pythons.)drf wrote:I didn't realize there was more than one Monty Python in movie form... Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Monty Python's Life of Brian
Monty Python and the Meaning of Life
And two of Terry Gilliam's movies that are have Pythons in it, and though I probably shouldn't, I generally count them towards the Monty Python canon: Time Bandits (co-written with Palin, with Cleese and Palin in acting roles) and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (with Palin and Idle in acting roles).

About Those Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Rumors?
Source: Terry Rossio
October 15, 2008
Terry Rossio, co-screenwriter of the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, has debunked the various rumors that are going around about Pirates of the Caribbean 4. They ranged from Johnny Depp getting $56 million for the fourth movie to Tim Burton directing to Sacha Baron Cohen and Russell Brand co-starring. Rossio writes:
For the record, none of the recent Pirates 4 rumors have any truth, including the so-called record 50 million dollar payday for Depp.
Some pretty funny stuff, though. Sacha Cohen? Tim Burton? Studios are way too protective of their franchises for that sort of thing.
The only thing that has been officially announced so far is that Johnny Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow in the fourth film.

Biography Malina is smart and pretty. She's Kuzco's friend and almost-love interest. However, he has a not-so-secret crush on her (he often calls her "a hottie hot hottie" or " the hottiest hot hottie in hottie-dom").

The 1st time I saw Russell Brand on tv my 1st thought was "he would be really great as a pirate". I can so see him playing Jack sparrow's brother (or slightly drunk brother
) I like russel but he is to rude for me, so I think it would be nice to see him in a disney film where he could be funny without being rude.
