All this talk about "Sleeping Beauty" has made me nostalgic, so I am going to relate a fun tale for everyone to hear :) .

When I was a kid my first introduction to the story was the Disney film version. Earlier someone had mentioned how the film would win over children with its perceived "cold" nature. As a kid I just liked how vibrant and enchanting both the animation and the music was. "Once upon a dream" literally haunted me because of how beautiful it was. I had seen Disney films before SB, but the songs never attached to me as well as SB did. I was so hooked on that song that one time I saw a Tom and Jerry short in which they flood the kitchen floor, then they open the refrigerator door and freeze the floor so it becomes an ice rink. When Jerry started skating they played the original ballet score from "Sleeping Beauty". I immediately recognized it from the movie and fell entranced by it once more. So I feel that while the characters are not as lively as the ones that came before or after it there's something truly enchanting about the film.

But anyways, here's the REAL story I wanted to tell you.

When I was in 2nd or 3rd grade my class went on a field trip to see a theater play. It was my first field trip ever and was very excited. Can you guess which play we went to see?

Yep, it was "Sleeping Beauty". Though this version wasn't based on the original fairy tale. The played was based on Disney's version!

My memory is hazy so I can't recall the exact details but the play followed the film's plot to a near T.

First off, it featured the three good fairies, which I believe were never in the original tale. And they looked exactly like the fairies in the film! Then, they had many of the film's music and events intact. Since this was a small theater play, though, most of the film's big fantasy events were replaced or altered.

For example, in the movie Flora and Merryweather fight over the color of Aurora's dress. In the play that I saw they fight over the color of the birthday cake! And it was a neat effect because the cake was white, and there were two spotlights on in, one red and one blue. So whenever one of the fairies said "Make it blue!" the light would turn on and the cake would be blue!

Aurora's animal friends were presented on stage via puppets, which I thought was neat.

Finally, Prince Philip's battle with Maleficent was very different as they didn't have the skills to pull off a dragon battle, so what they did was this. Philip now fights these shadow creatures summoned by Maleficent. Then, they used strobe light to create an other wordly effect for the battle. Finally, they used green smoke to signal Maleficent's defeat.

It was a joyous time at the theater, strengthened even further by my love of the movie :) .

On another Sleeping Beauty note, last year I read a short story for college called "Sleeping Beauty". The story was about a woman who due to her family's social standing she was forced to get married and denied the right of living her own life. So later on when the woman has an affair with her dance teacher her husband hits her so, so hard that she falls into a deep coma, hence the title "Sleeping Beauty".

^lol, ending on a sweet note? actually that paper sounds interesting.

and wow  that play sounds amazing! too bad i'll never be able to see it  I thought the changes they were gonna make would just feel sad, but they actually sound quite competent. Especially the shadow creatures plot.

hm.... I don't think Sleeping Beauty is cold at all. I'd say it's disney's most romantic film with Lady and the Tramp close behind it. The thing is, I'm kinda surprised that any child (nowadays) can sit through films like Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Bambi, Dumbo and Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. There's not a fart joke in sight!

I simply immediately thought of the feature on the Oklahoma! DVD, though thinking about it now, it could have been the Widescreen-vs-Pan&Scan feature on Sleeping Beauty! I'll have to check later.

Wow...just...wow. Does she ever get out of the coma (maybe by a kiss from the dance teacher) or is she forever the Sleeping Beauty?

I can agree on the degree of romance in the film (it's essentially a romance story without important things like plot or personality) but because of its style and characters, as well as the music, it always felt rather cold to me. Like you weren't allowed to touch it lest it break into a million pieces. You couldn't embrace the characters as easily as you could in previous films.

We do get hiccup jokes in Dumbo though! And intoxication! That should be some consolation for kids today...

-Escapay: My memory is foggy right now, but I'm sure she died at the end of the story. The whole thing was a sensationalistic piece of literature written to criticize the idea of social standings. Like I mentioned, the girl's family was rich, and felt she should marry someone of their stature, money wise. She wanted to become a dancer and while she's allowed to take dance classes people judge her, and admits that she is having an affair with the teacher.

The story is told in a very unique way. It uses "newspaper" articles, letters, third person narration and a really, REALLY weird narrative that uses vulgar tongue with no punctuation and grammar rules to develop the events and the characters.

Its in Spanish, though, so I can't recommend it.

Here's a Sleeping Beauty ad about forest fires prevention, like Cinderella had an ad about road safety and Ariel had an ad for keeping the oceans clean now Aurora teamed up with Smokey Bear to rescue our forests:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=un-t1rHR0u4
I wonder what ads Snow White and Belle will have,Jasmine,Pocahontas,Mulan,Giselle,Tiana and Rapunzel should also have ads.
Didn't Bambi also had some ad for preventing forest fires? or was it something else? and did Aladdin and Enchanted had any campaign like those?.

I feel like Belle's would be something about the Forrest too. It should probably feature her leaving The Beast for Smokey the Bear.

Too bad Disney didn't include a video restoration featurette to complement that called "The Sight of Beauty" or "The Look of Beauty".

Damn you, Disney. Why'd you stop doing the restoration featurettes?

Disney: Because we'd have to lie about how we did them starting with Cinderella and people would catch on.

Then restore them the right way.

Disney: But the right way would make it look old.

It's an old film. It shouldn't look like 2008.

Disney: Hmm...I guess you're right. We'll get it right on the Blu-Ray then.

You do that now. I hope you feel sorry for what you did.

Disney: We do.

And you won't make that mistake again?

Disney: We won't.

And you'll include the original film grain?

Disney: We will.

And you're telling me the truth right now and will make sure all your restorations are done right and not done new?

Disney: We're not. If we want it to look new, we'll make it look new!

Oy...
