Who's sick of greatest hits CDs?(Hilary, Xtina, JLo, Mariah)

Post by James »

Argh, by the end of 2008, some more un-needed greatest hits CDs/DVDs will be released, among them-
The Best of Hilary Duff
Keeps Gettin' Better- Christina Aguilera Greatest Hits
Jennifer Lopez- Greatest Hits
Robbie Williams- Greatest Hits 2
Mariah Carey- Ballads
Shannon Noll- No Turning Back- The Story So Far

The latter one will only be known by Australians, but still, im just so sick of them. They're so pointless, honestly, what happened to the days where artists always released album after album of new material, sometimes 2/3 albums of new stuff each year?!
Hmm, guess i can't complain, it'll only get worse...

Celine's got one coming out too called "My Love: Essential Collection"

Even though it is a greatest hits album, at least Christina's actually going to have new material on hers' as well as re-recorded versions of "Genie In A Bottle" and "Beautiful", so I'm not complaining. Besides, it's her first and each artist should at least have one . I just get fed up with Michael Jackson for instance who's had an endless list of compilation albums just to make a quick buck

YEah, but she's had 3 albums...THREE!!! That's ridiculous. IT tells me "Oh, BTW, there was a lot of filler on my albums"

When was this? 2-3 albums of new material each year? It happens but it's hardly the norm, nor has it ever been. I've noticed what seems to be a mild slow-down in music releases but I don't think Greatest Hits albums are to blame. With the music industry struggling to make sales, who can blame them? Besides, every established and successful studio artist will have to agree to X number of catalog compilation releases on a regular basis each time they sign or renew a contract.

If you're talking new material -- not compilations or live albums -- then you've got a couple of years with two releases per, which is impressive but the exception to the rule. And KISS is one of the more prolific in terms of new material within a short period of time. My point is that it's not realistic to expect several albums of all-new material every year. That kind of pace and quality is going to suffer.

Not anymore it's not, I agree. But in the 70's it was pretty normal for most artist to be at about an album a year (maybe a little more on average if you count comps/live as a portion of an album), but now an artist who puts out an album a year is a relative rarity.

I actually quite like Greatest Hits albums as long as someone's had enough hits, US or otherwise, to make one and offers some new stuff such as singles not available on any of their albums, fan favorites, unreleased stuff, etc. Christina's will have plenty of new stuff to drool over, and Celine's will have some new material as well. (And from what I hear the ORIGINAL 7:37 version of It's All Coming Back To Me Now, which is the ONLY version I'm willing to listen to. :P)

Now this Hilary Duff release? Do not want.

Hmm, Christina's is really weird in my opinion. Like, it's only got ten of her greatest hits not even all her singles, and then two new tracks, and some random re-recorded songs. Like, I don't understand why they didnt put more singles on it, more new stuff and if they were gonna re-record some, why not them all? The tracklisting is-
1. Genie In A Bottle (Re-recorded)
2. What A Girl Wants
3. Come On Over (All I Want Is You)
4. Lady Marmalade (Re-recorded)
5. Dirrty
6. Beautiful (Re-recorded)
7. Fighter
8. Ain't No Other Man
9. Hurt
10. Candyman
11. Keeps Gettin Better
12. Dynamite

I don't get the logic coz The Voice Within went to number 1 and isn't on there while Dirty which only got to like number 47 is on there.....hmmmm.

And although Hilary's isn't too good, the new video for the clip Reach Out looks great, it's in a mansion, she looks awesome.

And J.Lo's should have heaps of new stuff on it, reportedly very dancey/disco/electro kinda stuff.

Well the Mariah one obviously isn't another Greatest Hits... it's just Sony release more crap as usual!

The others ummm... that's all I can say. Though, the Christina one sounds "interesting" at least!

I think that as long as a Greatest Hits album has some new songs and some songs not available on their previous albums (like songs from movie soundtracks, for example), then it's okay. If they come with a DVD, then it's even better. I hadn't seen Christina's tracklisting...I know that on tour, she sings a solo version of "Lady Marmalade", so that makes sense to include that on the album...depending on the price, I'll buy it. With Hilary's, I'll probably just download the 2 new songs- her last Greatest Hits album (Most Wanted) is actually a really good set, with 3 brand new songs and some soundtrack songs and such.
