Top 10 Gay Movies...How Many Have You Seen?

Post by carolinakid »

After Elton just released their poll of the top 50 gaythemed movies. Here are the top 10:
1. Brokeback Mountain
2. Beautiful Thing
3. Shelter
4. Latter Days
5. Maurice
6. Trick
7. Get Real
8. Big Eden
9. The Broken Hearts Club
10. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

I've seen Brokeback, Trick, Broken Hearts & Priscilla. Trick is definitely my favorite. I guess I need to rent more DVDs! How many have you seen?

1. Latter Days (2003) (So glad to see it on the list)
2. Brokeback Mountain (2005)
3. The Broken Hearts Club (2000) (Not necessarily great but a film that is important to me since it really made me want to be open about being gay and have a group of friends like the ones in the movie. Minus the token black guy. Oh and Cole may be hot, but I'd take Denis over him any day for being not only attractive, but talented and nice and everything.)
4. Touch of Pink (The Cary Grant impersonation gets worse every time I watch it but it's still a really nice and enjoyable film)
5. Beautiful Thing (1995)
6. Philadelphia (1993)
7. Eating Out 2 (2006) (OK it was as lame as hell but it was a billion % better than the first one which was like having your teeth pulled)

I've also seen Almost Normal (2005) (again, a lousy film) and My Own Private Idaho (1991) (most WTF movie ever made, nothing on MST3K or anywhere else can compare).

A Beautiful Thing
The Broken Hearts Club
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Birdcage (still one of my favorites)
Philadelphia
In & Out (my parents actually took me to see this when I was 10...and they were still surprised when I came out of the closet this year  )
Angels In America
Victor/Victoria

Apparently I need to watch more from the list since I haven't seen any of the others before.

I think I've only seen Brokeback Mountain. Which was a horrible story, though, I guess, a pretty good film in the sense that it was told well. I guess it made first because of it being one of the only mainstream gay films.

I haven't seen much else because: 1. I have no money to buy my own movies, and 2. My mom thinks anything "gay" is porn. :? I have seen a couple of films with Ian McKellan on IFC along with some other freaky satanistic things that I didn't care for and Beautiful Thing the day the LGBT channel was a "free sample" (I love this one for some reason--it was "quaint" without becoming generic). When I move on-campus next year, I'm going to see more of these. I've already started making a list via Amazon. :P And I plan to sneak some things through my Christmas list.

EDIT: I forgot--my favorite LGBT [out of the ones I've seen] is without a doubt Transamerica. That year, I expected Brokeback to be the good film and Transamerica to only be worth watching because of Felicity. Instead, it was the complete opposite.

Nope. It's kinda a low budget gay American Pie where a straight guy dates a gay guy to get to his girl best friend. Also the film has straight guy's gay roommate and sluttly ex-girlfriend who add more complications to the whole charade. Not a good movie but it and it's sequel are guilty pleasure movies.

I've seen quite a LOT.Basically becasue if you go watch a Latinamerican/Spanish (mainly from Spain) there would be at least 1 gay situation (if the movie doesn't already is about it).

I'd say from what I remember:

1. Eating Out 2: I found it HILARIOUS!!! And very entertainint especially several factors that I found quite new to the scenario and provided with some real life situations and proven life is gray and not black and white:

- the stud was bisexual (didn't have to be specifically gay)
; wasn't feminine AT ALL
; was very confused about his orientation
; that there was a girl that said she liked men on men "action"
; a girl didn't mind that the guy was bisexual and accepted him as such

For me... it was the most believable movie of the genre

...especially if you take in consideration that the first one was quite a drama I believe

2. The Bad Education

... like how it played the whole idea, the "twist"at the end and how a character went into "being gay" just because of money

3. Y tu mama tambien

... again, the ending

4. Boys Culture

; another believable situation; except for the cliché gay/feminine

...of these, I've only secen parts or don't remember:

Brokeback Mountain
The Bulgarian Lovers
All About My Mother
Amic/Amat

Not really my thing...

18. Rocky Horror Picture Show
19. The Birdcage
maybe 44. Victor/Victoria ??

Bonus film:
Better Than Chocolate (not on the list, and dealing with lesbian instead of gay male stuff.)

That is about the extent of it.

I doubt many of these movies would be something I'd choose to watch even if they had straight pairings/issues.

For that matter, I wonder if most people would considered many of them average, easily forgotten films if they didn't have a gay theme.

Out of that list, I've only seen 2 and heard on one.

I saw both "Priscilla" and "Rocky Horror" on VH1. The first movie was aired back when RuPaul still had his talk show on the channel. I didn't see it completely but I do remember a great deal of it. "Rocky" was shown during Halloween and when they ran a "Behind the music" episode on it.

I've heard of "Brokeback Mountain" but never seen it. Not because its a "gay love" movie but because it was hyped to the point where I believe it wasn't that great.

Yet, it does seem like a fantastic love story, even if its gay love. I'm a sucker for love stories, even unconventional ones, so maybe I should see it.

Not only that, I've talked to straight men about the movie and they surprisingly liked it! One time I talked to the video store clerk about it and we both agreed it must be heartbreaking to live a lie just to make society happy, and it must be really awful to learn that the person you loved was merely using you as a "cover up".

Wow, I've seen 37 of the 50...

I watch way too many gay themed films. I blame it on my Karen Walker equivalent.

Anyways, my top 10 "gay movies" would be:

1. The Times of Harvey Milk
2. Philadelphia
3. Beautiful Thing
4. Angels in America
5. Brokeback Mountain
6. Far From Heaven
7. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
8. Trick
9. Another Gay Movie
10. Latter Days

I also took your recommendation to see this movie and I'm SO glad I did! Great fun it was. Also, is it just me or does Christian Campbell remind you of Mathew Broderick? Right down to the singing voice they seem like the same person. And speaking of singing, I would love to get mp3s for the songs that are sung in the movie and that little piano piece that kept showing up in the soundtrack was very nice.
