DC Superheroes: The Filmation Adventures & Warners vs Di

Post by 2099net »

Did anyone pick this up? Mr. Toad perhaps?

I just want to commend Warners on yet another fantastic supplement for what is basically a release of cheesy content of limited intrest to the market's largest demographic - the youth of today. The 40 minute feature on Filmation's history and specifically Lou Scheimer, was informative, interesting and surprisingly emotional.

I'm flabbergasted, absolutely flabbergasted, that this featurette is included on such a DVD release. Let's face it, such a release will hardly sell that well. It really puts Disney to shame, even most of the featurettes on the prestigious Walt Disney Treasures discs!

Once again Warners leads the way (who can forget the outstanding Dan DeCarlo and Alex Toth documentaries on the Josie and the Pussycats and Space Ghost collections) and Disney can't, won't or half-heartedly follow.

How can Warners treat DVD releases of somewhat ordinary shows like Josie and the Pussycats, Space Ghost etc better than Disney treats some of it's own televisual crown jewels like Duck Tales and Rescue Rangers etc?

Where's the featurette honouring voice artist Alan Young? (who incidentally has lots to say on both the UK and the totally different Australian Battle of the Planet's DVD sets). While one of the Donald Treasures had a somewhat lacking tribute to Carl Banks, where's the documentary looking at how Duck Tales was inspired by Carl Banks' work? Or the documentary looking at the history of Chip N Dale and how they were adapted for Rescue Rangers? Or how the totally original Gummi Bears were created? Or even the history of Disney's big move into weekday syndication?

In short, Disney, where is the love?
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

I just finished last night with the extra on Lou Scheimer.

It was kind of interest. I always thought of Filmation as the only studio that could out cheap Hanna Barbara. I thought they did a really good job of explaining why they had to do what they did.

It was a little bit of revisionist historry regarding the buy out/shut down. Lou Scheimer had been diagnosed with Parkinsons and it was his daughter, Erika who handled the shut down. I guess he wanted to take the heat off of her.

Still loved seeing the Justice League shorts, as bad as they were. What it did is made me realize just how lucky we were to have Justice League/Justice League Unlimited.
