"Fox Vexes the Watchmen"

Post by 2099net »

"Who Watches the Watchmen?" Well, probably not "you". Not in 2009 anyway.

So let's hope you have a lot of patience. The movie is stuck in legal wranglings over ownership between Fox and Warner Bros.

Normally, I would say this issue would quickly be settled (its actually been going on for over 6 months already) but there's something important about Watchmen.

It's friggin' HUGE. Since the trailer for the movie was first released, sales of the Graphic Novel have been 900,000. An insane amount when you would think anyone in the likely demographic for the movie/promotion (remember Warners had a huge Watchmen promotion at the comic con) should already have a copy. I mean, what self-respecting comic fan doesn't have a copy of Watchmen?

All indications are the film will be as big as The Dark Knight, if not bigger. And its fair to say, Fox want some of that cash, and as much of that cash as possible. And when numbers as big as those projected are in play, neither side is likely to backdown - Warners has over $100m already invested and Fox has (it would appear) an efficient means of blocking the film from being released, so has Warners well and truely snookered.

Finally, this is most likely the reason for Harry Potter to have been moved (a lot of industry insiders and speculators seem to agree). Warner have had a strong year in 2008 thanks to The Dark Knight, but without Watchmen in 2009, that year looks like it could "underperform" in comparison, so moving the strong Harry Potter to 2009 will [a] remove the takings from 2008's figures, which really doesn't need them and boost 2009's figures if indeed Watchmen is not released.

Also remember, if Fox blocks Watchmen, they're also effectively removing the biggest competition to their own movie[s] released around the same time - it's not really in Fox's interest to settle quickly.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

If Watchmen gets delayed I will become a "Mask" and seek vigilante justice on the jackasses at Fox who are responsible for this.
