The cat's out of the bag! And maybe today's the right day for it, seeing as how it's Barbara Eden's 74th birthday! Although Sony isn't formally announcing it until Monday, word got out earlier today - thanks to <A HREF="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... ">Amazon's pre-order entry</a> - that <b>November 4th</b> will see the DVD release of <i>I Dream of Jeannie - The Complete Series</i>. The 20-disc set will include all 139 episodes from the show's 5-season run, plus the 1985 reunion telefilm "<i>I Dream of Jeannie: 15 Years Later</i>".

On the down side, the 1991 reunion telefilm "<i>I Still Dream of Jeannie</i>" doesn't appear to be included. Also, the first season was originally shown in black and white, and that season was released on DVD both in a black and white version, and a separate colorized version. But we have no word yet as to which version of these episodes will be included on this set. However, rumors say that it will be the colorized version, instead of the correct original versions.

Video will be full frame. Audio will be English, Spanish and Portuguese. There will be subtitles in Spanish and Portuguese as well. As you can see in our exclusive first-look pics below, the plan is that the discs will be stored inside the base of a package that resembles Jeannie's bottle, with a top that comes off. That "bottle-case" will then go inside a clear plastic "box" that forms the rest of the packaging that will go on store shelves. Now, keep in mind that all of these details come from an early alert to retailers; this package design is not finalized yet, and could still be subject to change.

TVShowsonDVD has the article and pictures of the "Bottle" Packaging, which will look quite nice next to the "I Love Lucy": Complete Series packaging.

It will be 20 discs, with the reunion film I Dream of Jeannie: 15 Years Later included, but unfortunately they're not including I Still Dream of Jeannie (which I prefer over the other film). Also, the first season DVDs may be the colourised versions and not the original black-and-white.

What I don't understand is how it'll still be 20 discs and include the reunion film, since the complete series via the season sets is already 20 discs (4 discs per season). Maybe they'll re-author the discs or something, or it's really 21 discs.

Just out of interest, the bottom looks similar to the Complete Brady Bunch "fan-fold" disc holders (and the Lucy "fan-fold" holders).

I think you have the Lucy set Escapay. Did you ever have problems with paper-glue getting stuck to the discs?

Oh as for the Jeanie set, I don't like it. It seems overtly complicated and looks like it will be hard to store on shelves.

After buying the first season, I decided to wait for the inevitable series set, and I'm glad I did. I do have some concerns, though. The packaging doesn't look very sensible. It looks like all the DVDs are smushed together at the bottom of the bottle (with the edges sticking out, no less) with the rest of the bottle in cardboard. Not only is there a very good chance those discs will get scratched, but I can easily see that packaging getting bent or torn in the process of getting a disc out no matter how careful you may be.

I also think it's stupid to include one TV movie and not the other, especially when Sony owns both. While it's nice that something was added for this set, I would've liked some featurettes and vintage materials included, as well. Why can't every classic series set be like I Love Lucy's?

As for the disc count, perhaps the last disc for season five will be double sided. If it turns out that season one in this set will be colorized, I sincerely hope there'll still be four discs devoted to it. That way, I'll just stick my current first season discs in there. If they redo the disc layouts and encoding, though, this is going to be a problem.

Bewitched will most likely be the big classic TV boxed set for next Christmas. It only has two seasons left (one of which is coming in February). Here's hoping that set gets some worthwhile content added and with convenient packaging.

No, my only problem is that the damn glue isn't gluey enough and so the back half of the heart (for the lid) never stays attached.

I think it looks rather nice, but like you and Kelvin said, overtly complicated and not very sensible. It's worse than the recent "What's Happening?" and "Soap" Complete Series packaging, which simply puts the discs in a flimsy plastic spindle (like when you buy a 50-pack of DVD-Rs).

I won't mention the "Doctor Who" releases, which continually trump most any US TV Show on DVD. But regarding classic series, Universal has an upcoming "The Munsters" Complete Series that matches the quality of "I Love Lucy", complete with the unaired pilot, four documentaries (licenced out from A&E), a colorized version of "Family Portrait", and the two movies (Munster, Go Home! and The Munsters' Revenge) with the original (more or less) cast. However, there's still a fair amount of material that's not included, which is why I plan on getting the complete series boxset - no more double-sided discs! - and the Image Entertainment release of the documentaries, which is a double-disc set that also includes an hour's worth of additional interviews, several vintage pieces (network promos and studio newsreels), and an alternate unaired pilot. It'll be a double-dip on the documentaries, but would be worth it.

The newest news for the set is that the oldest shows are colorized and it will not have ANY of the TV movies.

Well, that's sort of a mixed blessing. On one hand, faithful fans who've been buying the individual seasons won't be getting the short end of the stick, and this could mean a separate release of both TV movies. On the other hand, having the colorized episodes in there is ridiculous. I thankfully still have my season 1 set which I'll be placing into this one, but not every buyer of thie complete series may be that lucky.

Now I'm rather disappointed, but not surprised (this is *Sony* after all, where their idea of a bonus feature is a "minisode" of some other show...). Oh well, I'll probably just buy the separate season sets, as they'll fit better on my shelf and as of late seem to be on sale more often than before.

I was very excited when I read the title but became disappointed when I heard the B and W episodes were colored. I don't understand what the use of that is? It seems they could save money AND make fans happy by just leaving the episodes as-is.

I love the packaging for this! It's really cool. I haven't seen this show since I was a kid on Nick at Night. Maybe if one day I have some extra cash, I'll pick it up.

Still need to get these, and Bewitched, and the Addams Family and Munsters, and I'm sure there are others I want, and I'm so annoyed that Dobie Gillis hasn't been released. Anyway, I just gotta say, of all the TV shows turned into movies, I'm surprised this one never happened. This one could have made a heck of a movie. Ooh, Hilary Duff would have been great in the role, or the girl who played the pop singer, Cora, in "Music and Lyrics".

And I still am waiting for Jim Carrey to play Plastic Man, he already missed the boat on Jack Tripper (too old now). I also have a vision of a Gilligan's Island movie starring Jamie Kennedy and John Goodman, maybe Lindsay Lohan as Ginger, Amanda Bynes as Maryanne, Donald Trump and whoever he's married to as the millionaire and his wife, and Luke Wilson as the Professor. That's my dream cast anyway. Too bad they didn't make that Bewitched movie based squarely on the original with Alicia Silverstone and Crispin Glover or Jim Carrey. Oh, the terribly underused vision of perfection, Elisabeth Harnois, would be great as Samantha or Jeannie!

It's been in development hell for years and every so often, there's a new name added to the list of actresses approached to play Jeannie.

A week doesn't sound too bad, it's much better than the three-year wait between seasons for "Mary Tyler Moore" (which apparently, is finally going to release the final 3 seasons within the next year). I doubt I'll be buying it day-and-date as "Doctor Who" comes out the following week, and that is a higher priority for me.
